Gurudongmar lake Trek - Winter, North Sikkim

Sharing with you all the experience of trekking 2kms up to Gurudongmar lake during winters in the harsh climatic condition. ( Low oxygen levels @ 18000 feet @ -15 degree Celsius ) .
Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest lakes in the world and in India, located at an altitude of 17,800 ft, in the Indian state of Sikkim.

Went there this February and (I think as per this video) the bottom layer of the water started to melt but the lake was still frozen and I remember throwing a rock on the icy upper layer of the lake and it bounced a couple of steps forward and it was all fun but damn this is pure heaven what you got to witness!! Looks like its in the Arctic... When was the time you visited??

Hello please guide me... we are planning to visit Sikkim in this December 20-28th. Will there be heavy snowfall due to which gurudongmar will lake be closed? Please reply as soon as possible!❤️

Due to covid, I ain't sure of anything there. But generally, it's not closed. The thing is vehicles will not go to the peak due to thick snow. So after reaching at a point, you might have to trek upto 2-3 kms uphill to reach the lake. So, plan that way. Contact someone there if possible.

Ensure to carry water bottles enough , chocolates , camphor, coz oxygen levels are not enough . Trek slow and safe.

Depends on ❄️ snow. We too visited this around end of December. Vehicles did not go till lake because of snow blockage. So we had to trek 3 kms and go. Weather might be extreme as I have shown in video.

Better to ask this from locals. If there is heavy snow, the vehicles would not go till the lake. You would need to trek for about 2kms. All depends on weather. But it's worth giving a shot

As far as I know, if there was a lot of ice in Gurudamba Lake, the military jawans would not give permission to go upstairs, but from what you saw in your video, there is only you and there is no tourist party, so the tourist military gave permission for you. please answer

It's because usually the tourists are very less in such extreme weather. There were about 6 people in total. We had to trek to the peak because cars were not going due to thick snow. We did not need any such permission.

Yes infact summer n mid summer is a good time to visit. Though tourists visit this place whole year but winters are harsh here and road blockage is a problem

Yes they allowed us. Our car stopped 2kms before the top. It slips a lot and unsafe to take any bike or car in winter and snow. So we had to trek 2kms. We took that risk but I won’t suggest to do this if someone has breathing issues etc as we were taking breaks every 3 mins. 18000 feet is not normal. There were people fainting so go on your own risk in winters
