Gotta say, one unrealistic wish I have of the game would be that Gus wouldn’t complain about money being tight if you spend a certain amount of money there. Like if I dropped a million gold on salads, and he makes a 50% profit or whatever, it would be great to hear him be glad that he has plenty of money now, at least more than he needs to keep the bar afloat. I think an important thing to mention is that there's characters like Caroline who say that they get take-out from the saloon, so I'm guessing the saloon is less of a bar and more of just. a bunch of different types of restaurants and the like smooshed together. So in that regard the saloon would likely be one of the better-off businesses despite what Gus says. Gus probably keeps some of the other businesses afloat too, getting fish from Willy, eggs and milk from Marnie, produce from Pierre... and hey, Gus gets quite a pretty penny from me for salads and coffee so... what I'd call suspicious is that after 5 years I still haven't seen a single health inspector at his establishment 🤔

That's also probably one of the main reasons that Emily is there all the time - in a lot of pubs you can't really have one person managing both the kitchen and the bar. Even if there's not a lot of customers, it just isn't practical. My heaedcanon is honestly just that one of them is 'in the kitchen' but we just... don't actually see that part. Because it would make more sense than having two bartenders. Frankly it would probably be Emily on the bar, Gus in the kitchen.
@zinnialynn95793 жыл бұрын
I imagine Gus finds himself in a tough spot in regards to Pam, Clint, and Emily. Other commenters have pointed out that Emily is responsible for supporting herself and her sister, so reducing her hours, while sound business sense, would actively harm her. Something Gus wouldn't want to do. Enter Clint who, while skeezy about it, makes keeping Emily on so many hours at least financially feasible. Does he tell his close friend and employee that a customer is creeping on her, risking not only his patronage but her sense of safety at work? Maybe it'd be the ethically correct thing to do... but it'd be shooting himself in the foot with both barrels. The same goes for Pam. If Pam were to get sober? Gus couldn't keep the lights on. Right back in that difficult situation. Do the right thing for someone he cares about and risk shooting himself in the foot... in a way that could also damage that friendship. If Pam isn't in a place to take steps toward sobriety? Pushing her even slightly could damage their friendship irreparably. It's a dark and difficult place to be in... and possibly a reason he chose not to engage with Shane when a third daily regular moved into the valley? He didn't want to be in this dance with another person. He stayed out of it.
@kinseylise85952 жыл бұрын
I agree with all of this. Gus is trying really hard not to rock the boat with anyone. Since he doesn't pay attention to Shane (Emily's pairing if you don't marry her), I think he may not realize that Emily has no interest in Clint (she presumably talks about him sometimes since they're friends). In that case Gus might see Clint as a total positive because he defrays some of the costs of employing Emily and may eventually date her, and doesn't worry about it further. For Pam, she clearly isn't ready to take steps towards sobriety when you first meet her, and Gus has known her to be that way for years. Even if he pushed her, she could always put in an order for beer from the Joja warehouse, and then she might have more beer in her house than she could safely drink, Gus wouldn't make enough money, and she would be paying more for the product. I would guess that if she expressed effort Gus would try to support her and suggest soda (he does have a soda machine in the saloon, maybe he could up the price a little to recoup costs? She doesn't seem to cook so he wouldn't lose all his profits from her even if she got sober.). However, he likely knows that she isn't ready for change and even if you get to max hearts with her and build her a new house she is still struggling and may not want him to push her. In many ways Gus strikes me as very neutral; he doesn't want to pressure anyone and is trying to provide what he can for the community without risking his livelihood or friendships. I also totally agree about Shane. Gus knew how difficult it was to rely on supplying Pam with the thing he knew she needed to quit, and decided to be grateful for the increased revenue from Shane rather than get involved personally.
@jasminchristinee2 жыл бұрын
This is why I think Gus does not talk about Shane when talking about regulars: He's friends with Pam and probably knows her for a long time, therefor he knows she does not want to quit drinking (yet). Her mental state is also not affected by alcohol. She seems stable drunk and sober. Shane on the other hand is in a really dark place mentally and he uses alcohol as some kind of escape or coping mechanism - even though it seems as it makes him even more miserable (4 hearts and 6 hearts). And Gus probably knows that. So that is the reason why he is never bringing him up in conversations about regulars and how they are helping him pay the bills. Because he tries not to think about how the alcohol is probably doing more harm than good. He needs the money to pay for bills and Emily but on the other hand he almost feels guilty for giving alcohol to someone who clearly needs therapy instead of a drink. Gus probably always tells himself that "it is Shane's decision" and "not his responsibility". That's why he keeps selling him beer every night.
@rowboatcop44513 жыл бұрын
The way I read Gus is as a sympatgetic enabler. Not some one who is maliciously feeding into his patron's vices, but rather someone who is genuinly wants the best for them, but in his attempts to be nice, he perpetuates their issues. As far as why he employs Emily, i always thought of it as Emily is purely the bar girl, and Gus cooks. During slow hours he can juggle both but when it gets busy he's cooking and she's pouring

I like Gus, I think something that's important about the Stardrop Saloon is that Gus isn't just known for his drinks, he's more known and beloved for his passions in cooking. Being the man that brings the main dishes to nearly every food oriented festival and not many else in the Valley having as deep backgrounds into culinary arts. You have the only place in the valley to get fine cooking you didn't get second hand from Pierre, nor microwaved like Joja Mart.
@jarl_jake23293 жыл бұрын
Despite Gus saying how the saloon struggles I still feel like its a more viable business than most in town. You are literally Clint and Robins only customers in town. Now you could argue the farmers patronage at Robin could single handed fund her business is probably true, I feel like Clint would need a substantial more amount of customers. Willys too for that matter, although it at least seems to imply that willy sells his stuff to the saloon and probably other outside sources. Who knows maybe Clint sells his weapons online but that would be the only way he could survive. Harvey also has a horrible business plan. If he did house calls and traveled to neighboring towns I could see him keeping his doors open. But he doesn’t even have a patient every day and for an entire clinic with a part time nurse thats rough. Although the most ridiculous business is probably joja mart. Theres are not nearly enough customers in pelican town to justify a large chain like joja. Especially since half are still loyal to Pierre. Pelican is also a dead end town with very few out of town shoppers. It would be dead within a month on arrival. Anyway the TLDR of this is Pelican town really needs some tourism.

On the topic of having help at the bar, You'd think that Gus would need an extra hand to run the counter while he was in the kitchen... but ConcernedApe had a bit of an oversight and didn't actually *include* a kitchen in the stardrop saloon. (there is no stove, counter space or sink at the bar, so he can't cook it right there, and he has a personal dining area in the back that he never uses) Overlooking this bit of a flub, it's implied that gus cooks everything on his menu, which means that running the bar isn't a one-person job unless he's serving everyone reheated food he's prepared before the bar opens. (and considering that you can get perfectly high quality food out of the garbage cans in the valley, I'm inclined to believe that food just doesn't play by the same rules in stardew-world as it does in real life, so this might actually be a possibility)

I personally think there’s no “morally perfect” NPC in the game, as it really mirrors us as individuals. We all have our good and bad sides, and you just grow up realizing that some of those “bad” parts are not done for the sake of causing trouble alone. While I don’t agree with Gus being somewhat responsible in Pam’s (and possibly Clint’s) alcoholism, he needs to pay bills and would ultimately be in trouble without their patronage. On top of that, he seems to be one of the few locals that respect Linus and his lifestyle(not judging him rummaging for food in trash cans and promising him that he can always ask for anything he’s made that day if he needs it).
@Mathilde_Bruhn3 жыл бұрын
Gus' reasons for employing Emily and not cutting her hours might have more to do with him being a pushover; according to Emily, working at the saloon is how she pays the bills for her and Haley, which is especially important since Haley won't get a job. She even has an event saying that Gus would be understanding if she left her job at the saloon in order to pursue her passion instead. While I will admit that Gus probably has made the connection that Clint shows up for Emily, I really think his main motivation is the fact that Emily needs this job and needs hours in order to provide for her and her sister. While yes, Emily could get a job at Jojo Mart, given her personality, I think that's the sort of job she would rather die than have, and I think Gus knows that

This is the first one of these that I really want to comment on. on my first farm I had this tiny head canon about Gus that he took on an almost father figure role to my young farmer. I would always stop by the saloon, usually to grab a quick bite to eat, but sometimes just to talk to gus. His warmth and niceness and... kinda... loneliness made me feel drawn to him. His 3 heart event where he was struggling financially, but didn't want to hurt pam really resonated with me. I had this thought that maybe he had wanted to settle down, maybe he was even married once and he wanted kids but it never worked out. Maybe his wife passed or maybe their marriage just didn't survive, but he saw me as a daughter and I saw him as a dad. What really cemented this is that, somehow, Lewis- who assured me that the gift of the winter star event was completely random every year- paired me and Gus for all three years I played that farm. Gus will always have a spot in my heart, he is such a sweet person and I am willing to overlook the few things pointed out in this video- by and large he does what he needs to and helps who he can.

I don't think that even the farmer is excluded in that regard. They are INCREDIBLY nosy and even downright stalkerish, tending to hide in bushes or watch from afar, even when they have no business doing so. A few of these events can be chalked up to the farmer having little social skills after being stuck in their corporate job for so long, but others are almost inexcusable, such as them DIGGING THROUGH PIERRE'S ROOM FOR NO REASON. I beat Rune Factory Oceans a while ago, and one way I think they did a good job making the town economy make more sense was that the city had people living in town that you couldn't ever interact with (or if they did talk, they didn't have a profile pic or text box). If I remember correctly, they had houses that you couldn't enter as well. Also, tourists would appear in town and walk through the streets. When I play farming sims, I try to think that the town is much bigger than represented and that every character you meet and every building you go into are considered the only important characters and buildings to the protagonist from their POV. Once I do that, the game economy doesn't bug me as much. Ha ha.

I think Gus is a good person but as the social center of the town, even after restoring the Community Center, I think he fears confronting anyone on their drinking or their reasons for coming to the bar because the fallout could be explosive for the town. Like when he remarks Clint coming in every night and going 'oh ho, good for business!" I think he's putting on the positive barkeep vibe when in reality he's not just worried how Clint may react, but also how that could harm Emily and by extension Hailey too. Gus enlists the Farmer's help to address Pam's debts as it is, can you imagine if he tried to cut her off from drinking there? Worst scenario is if he tried to cut Shane off in early game. Marine would ultimately support Shane over Gus, putting Lewis in an awkward position between his (secret) lady friend and a big source of town income. Jas knows something is wrong, she leans on Vincent the way little kids support each other. Vincent innocently repeats what he hears, leading Jodi in an upset to tell Caroline and both women debating whether to support the Saloon or not. Sam shares the scuttlebutt to Abigail and Sebastian. I'm going really far with this but I see Gus as the guy who would sooner keep the peace than risk an all-out town war. He's stirring the pot, but he doesn't want the sauce to burn either.

As a person whos parents owned a bar in a small town, they actually don't make as much money as you would think. They have to pay for all the booze and food that is there and some days, like the weekend, when days are slow, they don't make much profit. They struggled to pay taxes and couldn't afford to have workers. After they sold the bar, things became better for them and we were all much happier.

It somehow all comes back to Lewis being a bad major. If he'd cared more for his town, he would support the local businesses but he just leaves everything up to the farmer and the farmer can't really do anything to help Gus' pub.

"We don't give her the booze"?! Speak for yourself! I give Pam a bit of pale ale and beer... Okay, fine. I mostly give her parsnips because it's easy to build up a stockpile and certainly requires a lot less time investment than making booze. The person I give booze to the most is Willy - he sure loves mead!

I wish there was a Quest that you can get once you get 8 hearts with Pam,Shane,Demitrius and Gus. Pam or Shane will come to your door and request that you try make Alcohol free beer to help them cut off it. The quest will ask you to ask around to see who can help which Demitrius does, You drop 50 of each of the alcoholic beverages to him and once the order is met you will get a cutsceen with you and him in the lab. It then rewards you with the ability to make alcohol free beer, and then a cutscene where pam and Shane enjoy it and Gus puts it on his menu. After the event Non alcoholic alternatives replace Pam and Shane's universal loves and if offered the regular they hate it stating they gave that stuff up for good.

We once see shane with a lot of bottles pased out in his room. So there must be other ways to get Alcohol. Joja? Definetly! So Gus throwing Pam out would not help her at all, but get her to Joja Mart, buying there the beer and getting drunk at home... all alone. It would get worse if he just throws her out. She needs an profesional and everyone in town could convince her of that, not just Gus. Plus the scene with the giant omelet he made on the house shows that he is a lovely guy. But maybe to nice, like for example with Emily. I think he only keeps her around so she has a job that she's doing good and Clint is an extra. One guy could not be the reason for another employee.

I do wonder if Gus sees his saloon as like, a safe place for Pam to drink. Like, she's gonna drink heavily anyway, but this way she can drink where people can keep an eye on her and be served proper alcohol, rather than buying cheap Jojabeer or some kind of moonshine and getting sloshed alone in her trailer.

The scene where he's stirring his sauce most definitely has a nice way of communicating "I have to stir this pot. Not you. Be good or else the sauce is ruined." and feels very mobster like to me... like "what happens if I am a bad ingredient, Gus?" and he'd be like "Oh, I don't know, we might have to find a way to get the awful taste out." It almost seems threatening. Almost. Just how I felt on first viewing anyway.

Clint may close shop at 4pm, but you can still get him to break open your geodes so long as he's in the building, haha. I'm always neutral about Gus, but I do agree that he seems to walk a bit of a line with his customers. He knows at least a couple of them are alcoholics, but he seems like an enabler at times regardless. Though, I suppose there isn't a lot of choice when Pelican Town is so small in population. I will say, I hadn't considered the idea that he keeps Emily around specifically to "encourage" Clint to hang out for a few beverages, and now I can't un-think that. Awesome analysis, as always!

Ever consider the reason Gus keeps Emily around is implied eye candy for *ahem* certain customers? Her allure keeps him in business, so he has to pay her for the part. She's oblivious to it of course...
@laum53713 жыл бұрын
The thing about bars is that they dont just profit from people adicction but supply the ambience and service. If Gus stopped selling alcohol, he would still have a business as there are other customers that eat and the others would get the alcohol somewhere else. He provides because there is a demand for it. So he is not responsible for their excess at least he is giving a safe enviroment to enjoy.
@fragilebean13143 жыл бұрын
My dad owned a bar when I was little. It was his dream to own one for most of his life, and used all of his savings behind my moms back on one. She was pregnant with me at the time and left him (because of many issues, mostly because she's a bipolar lunatic and pretends to be dead for attention (not even joking, she'd do this or pretend to run away at least 5 times during my childhood)). He was basically a LOT better off without her anyways. That tangent aside, he had a good time for years, still struggling to make ends meet most weeks though. In the end, the housing crash in 2009 or whatever caused him to go bankrupt and sell the bar at a fraction of what he paid for it originally. He lost his house too. He lives in a trailer now but he's still content with life. Losing memory fast though. It's sad spending time with him because he just repeats the same stories over and over to me and gets disheartened if I don't react like it was the first time I've heard it.

My fault. Had you heard me out loud, you would've heard a royal you. Glad to hear you're treating my friend right and not being smugly superior about it. "Those" that take the attitude of, "I'll be the better man and decide for you, you failure." are people that likely wouldn't want much to do with me and that I quite likely wouldn't get on with. That's for trusted loved ones to do. For the guy who just moved in down the way, it's just tricking yourself into double-dipping on self-satisfsction. Feeling superior for being able to turn your nose up at a supposed lesser, and then telling yourself it was charitable and wise to help by withgiving, because you so commendably know better.

@@bikecaptain8015 Oh no I'm better than all of them I've got so much money I can't even spend it all and we all live in a "town" with like 30 people living in it. I can make millions with 1 day of work per week and then sleep the rest. I spend my money improving the town with new bus services, a sort of metro system, access to a tropical island, bi weekly gifts for as many people as possible, a movie theatre.. I bought a movie theatre for a "town" with 30 people in it. That is insane. You can't pretend that they don't collectively have enough money for this stuff. Tickets to the movies are 1k and there are 30 of them and they all go to the movies at some point. 3/5 upgrades cost less than 30k so they can afford it.
