I would say ditch the obvious clickbait 101 titling. There is no "secret backstory" and you aren't "revealing" anything. Further, there's no agreeing or disagreeing with an objective timeline. It's either correct, or it isn't.

One thing I have doesn't make sense, the Santiago event has to be before max died, Eladio says "you're not in Chile anymore' possibly hinting to what happened there. Or did Gus go back to Chile after Max got killed?
@timothysmith2042
@timothysmith2042 12 күн бұрын
@edhas5970 in the video, he speculated that Gus went back to Chile after Max's death before moving into America because the Cartel knew who he was and he had to erase the last remaining details connecting him to his past there. This is great speculation but what about that past? The cartel doesn't kill him because they know who he is and what he has done in Chile. Probably also because of who he is connected to in Chile, who might retaliate against the Cartel. the narrator dismisses the generalisino reference because Fring would be too young. Yes, he would be too young for the establishment but not a revolutionary force who leaders are often idealistic youths. Or maybe it was the secret police as is speculated here. And what of the profits of his drug empire? Was Fring sending money back to Chile to his allies there? I would love to have seen this back story played out on screen and found it especially frustrating that it was so hinted at and never came to fruition. Look, the Cartel couldn't touch Gus but Walter White can?

I don't think a prequel to Gus should be done because the mystery around his character is what makes him all the more terrifying and captivating sometimes no explanation and less is more could be even more strong and terrifying and would keep a character far more interesting than revealing everything under the sun about them.

While AI absolutely can replicate those aspects of human speech, it requires way more work than I'm willing to assume that this guy would have put in. Real narrator, AI-written script. That's my assumption.

Gus's childhood was in Peru, where he lived in poverty with his mother and siblings. His parents were divorced, and his father was in Chile. When Pinochet came into power, Gus's father became a high-ranking general in Chile. Gus's father offered him a chance to come to Chile and join the military, saying it was his only way out of poverty. Believing this to be true, Gus agreed and moved to Chile. This is why Hector mockingly referred to him as "Generalissimo." Gus was just a low-level officer, but his father held a high-ranking position. Later, Gus met Max and fell in love with him. Gus tried to keep their relationship hidden from his father and the military but ultimately failed. Gus was discharged from the military, and his father gave him an ultimatum: end the relationship or be disowned. Gus refused, and he and Max immigrated to Mexico. Eladio knew that Gus's father was a high-ranking officer in Chile, which is why he couldn’t kill Gus. Eladio feared retaliation if he did. However, killing Max posed no such risk, as Gus's father was already intent on ending the relationship.

I feel like this would be a great in-story reason for his poor Spanish, since it isn't a natural language in Peru. Even if Chileans speak Spanish, it's Chilean Spanish, which I would assume is slightly different from Mexican Spanish.

It is stated in S4 Ep 8 pf Breaking Bad, that Gus immigrated to Mexico in 86, but then immigrated to the U.S in 89, within the same sentence that info is uttered, also Santiago has a bit more to it than just Herr Schuler and Gus, as Lalo reminisces on a time in Santiago when he gives Hector the bell, yes they could be two different events, but the creators of this show have shown a lot of care and intent with their writing, so its not so easy to write off as coincidence in my mind personally.

homey i've met someone who was a child soldier under pinochet. when they are indoctrinated that young, a former general at 28 is not unheard of. at that age they don't have developed empathy and are capable of more ruthless barbarities. i didn't let this person close to me when i learned that.

on peter schuler.. what business does a german business person and national have doing in chile? a lot of the war criminals from world war II on the german persuasion sought out new lives, most often in argentina. to go down that rabbit hole look into the guerra sucia / dirty war. this was mostly well known as a witch hunt on the communists and leftists in argentina where a bunch of people were 'disappeared'.

you are definitely not a historian. neither am i. i would consult with an actual historian from the region. here is my best guess based on the other information. gus was born into a poor rural chicken farm family that would have been branded as communists. the death squads probably executed his whole family and for some reason, decided this kid is alright and would make a good child soldier. do the whole climbing the corporate ladder but with child death squad thing, becomes a general at a very young age. pinochet lasted till around 1990. by then extradition would have been a lost cause. but if he got moved to mexico at the age of 28, that could track. he would have needed an entity like madrigal to forge new documents and obfuscate records. madrigal would not have been an altruistic entity, helping war criminals start new lives across the globe out of the goodness of their corporate heart. they would have needed financial incentive to do something like that. this is where the business plan for los pollos hermanos as a methamphetamine distribution network across the americas would have been shared. they would never approve such an ambitious business plan from anyone except someone they could trust to be patient, meticulous, and detail oriented. you can look into the history of nazis and methamphetamine, but it was a very popular drug in germany amongst the war criminals, especially the tank drivers. after the second world war meth spread various places around the world, not sure about details of that spike in south america, but wouldn't be surprising if the death squads used it.

great video! my favorite part was at 10:30 when gustavo fring takfired walter white for his supposed jahmiyyah after walter finally said he was maturidi. that moment when walter realized that 'ilm ul kalam was a valid way to study 'aqida was such a powerful culmination of his character arc that finally separated him from fring's "bi laa kayf" manhaj. it was so heartwrenching to watch as jesse pleaded with fring "don't takfir him, he may be a mubtadi but not a kafir" only for fring to say "you murji'i! i disassociate from you." jesse begged walter to read kitab ut tawhid again, but walter insisted that after reading 'aqida at tahawiyyah his life was changed and he could never go back. the tragic splitting of these close friends was such a powerful ending to the show that left all viewers in tears.

I think a Gustavo series would be terrible. Why? The entire persona was built out of his pure hatred for the cartel, and the Salamancas in particular, over the execution of Max. If we have a prior Gustavo Fring, it would be prior to his commitment to Max's murder. Meaning we wouldn't have the cold, blood-thirsty, calculating Fring we have come to know and love. Now one could argue we would get to see his transformation, sure. But that would also require a good portion of the series with Max being alive and well, exploring Fringe's relationship with him so that we understand the motive and hatred he bears when Max is killed. Then it would be Max's murder, followed by a series finale where... nothing happens. Because the cartel and the Salamancas are killed off in Breaking Bad. So we would have no immediate closure within the Fring series itself. Meaning the entire suspense ends on a cliff hanger, except it's a cliff hanger we already know the ending to. In other words, it's just vapid fan service that tells us nothing and does nothing.
@KPD_KPD

They can just introduce new antagonists for Gus' story (like Chuck and Howard in Better Call Saul) before he meets the cartel. The story would be in 2 different plots. The first is Gus' youth in Chile and the second is Gus' journey in building his drug empire. Sure we already know what will happen to Gus in BCS and BB, but a backstory is still a story and it certainly is not a "nothing".

Gus was involved with Pinochets secret police during the junta, he had to leave quickly because he, a, got caught plotting to overthrow Pinochet or b, the timeline of his leaving matches the downfall of pinochet. The Na@i connections come in where he has connections with Madrigal, Chile had many SS personnel after the war, just check Colonia Dignidad and they helped train people like Gus. Thats my guess.
