I remember running into Gus in a takeaway across from the Roma Street Travelodge on origins night (he was coaching) he copped a spray from us, being Queenslanders but he was so gracious and up for the game and the challenge. He was a pleasure to talk to and make time for all fans not just the Blues. He is to NSW what we are to Queensland, upmost respect for him and what he does for the game and for his NSW team, he gets what it is to be a supporter of origin and what makes us Queenslanders - Also, lets not forget it take two great teams to make a great game, that is the spectacle of our sport!
@troystaunton2542 жыл бұрын
14:00 Gus is 100% right. As a Queenslander my ambition was to play for Queensland. Australia was a secondary thing. Queensland was what mattered that maroon is the only thing that ever occupied my mind. I tried explaining it to a mate and the only thing like it in the world is Texas and the United States. In Texas you’re a Texan 1st 2nd and 3rd and then you’re an American. Same with Queenslanders I’m a Queenslander. Every day of the week and occasionally I’m Australian. That’s how it is. Now obviously instead of being a Queensland legend I was in fact garbage. But the point is Queenslanders dream of playing for Queensland new south Welshmen dream of playing for Australia.
@Dcp0001a2 жыл бұрын
What you’re really talking about is mentality. I’d add that from a NSW supporter perspective many fans would put their club footy ahead of origin over the years and still many probably do. Especially the foundation clubs like Souths, StGeorge and maybe even clubs like Parra and Manly. Maybe it’s something those north of the border don’t get haha. But anyway what this all means is that the mentality of the two states is slightly different and this manifests itself in the way the games will play out more often than not. Well that’s my amateur psychologist take on it haha.
@troystaunton2542 жыл бұрын
@@Dcp0001a pretty accurate assessment mate. Try explaining to an American that clubs like Melbourne and Brisbane and North Queensland will take the full suspension for a player so he can play origin or rest him so he can play origin. They honestly can’t comprehend the idea that Queenslanders (and Queensland dominated clubs) will willingly lose a player for 6 weeks and do his recovery just so he can play for his state, like with billy when he did his shoulder. Storm lost him for a year so he could play game 2 alone, and no one bats an eyelid.

As a QLDer it was great to see us get the win, at the end of the day we were the better team when it counted. No knock to NSW they took everything we threw at them and almost turned it around in the closing minutes of the second half, after repeat sets QLD could not cross the line it was a truely valiant effort from NSW unfortunately just undone by some critical errors. I am nothing but excited for the Origin Series to come. I remember the interstate games in the 70s, when the rules were skewed in favour of the Blues not only winning the series but also securing the overwhelming majority of Kangaroo selections. Those Maroon best who'd graduated to play in the Sydney comp but could not displace the NSW incumbent didn't get a game at all, as they were not eligible for Queensland selection, and so they were not in the running for the national squad. Once Origin rules began, Queenslanders began to dominate the Aussie team, as well as the interstate grudges. By God, I LOVE IT.

Roger speaks the truth. I remember those years like it was yesterday. I remember the humiliation, year after year of being flogged by NSW. Flogged by mostly fellow Queenslanders. I heard the other night that the chant is already been sounded "Get rid of Freddy, get rid of Freddy!" What difference is that going to make? NSW has had that many coaches I've lost count. Now, perhaps I could offer this. NSW is being pitted up against a bigger state that has a lot more resources available to them. And QLD also has a much bigger pool of players to choose from too.( For instance, I understand the Brisbane Broncos have 11 feeder clubs at their disposal alone. And they're only 1 team!) Now I don't know much about football or the politics surrounding the game, but sadly, whenever a team is not performing, the first person that gets the finger pointed at them is the coach! Jack Gibson once said "Success starts at the front office". I am happy for anyone to correct me if I'm wrong.

Gus said it perfect. When things don't go NSW way they crumble there is no player who will do something to change the game back in there favor. OLD as always had players who can change a game if things aren't going there way. Ben Hunt 40/20 is and example. OLD were behind and were struggling to break NSW down. A few more minutes OLD would have been down. Ben Hunt Steps up gets a 40/20. You could see how the OLD lifted and NSW dropped. Try came from it. NSW still had a chance it was another disparate try and it just didn't work. NSW needed leaders to make a 40/20 or make a big play when they really needed.

I was waiting for it, Gould always has to say Origin is always about QLD. He's said it so many times. That's him comforting himself, so every time the blues lose he can say its just QLD being QLD, and everyone prefers it when they win, outside of Blues supporters, neutral supporters, Gould suggests always want QLD to win. I don't agree with any of that, you can see over the decades, it goes in eras, QLD were dominant early through the first decade, then NSW had a long era of dominance up to 2005, then QLD went on an equally long era of dominance ending with the retirements of Smith, Cronk and Thurston, Inglis as well. Now NSW will dominate, they'll win more than they'll lose, as long as they keep the current NSW crop together. That's why QLD dominated for about 12 years recently, they built a real team, an extraordinary group of talented youngsters backed up with older heads like Lockyer, Price, Civoniceva etc. Nsw can do the same as long as they keep the nucleus together and to be durable, Thurston, Smith, Cronk, Inglis etc, hardly missed a game through that run, they were all durable, mostly injury free. Its not all about QLD, NSW have as much to do with this as their opponents. That's just Gould making excuses, every time NSW look a little vulnerable or after they've lost.
