Correction: two power supplies are not used one for each channel as I said in the video, but for digital and analog sections of the DAC. I lost my focus there, repeating what's usually true for amplifiers but not for DACs. Thank you Mike for bringing this to my attention. 👍

Hi Srboljub🤜🤛 and thank you for mentioning me and my channel, it really warmed my heart. Big Thank You for taking the burden that was sitting on my shoulders for a while now, when I called it one of the best sounding DACs period. People are skeptical by nature, I'm very skeptical as well, but you know...good ears and good equipment could never lie. I'm glad that you found it as impressive as I did, it really deserves all the praise...so that others might challenge themselves and craft something similar. I did compare it with a few more top-tier DACs, but I didn't want to mention them, as people (probably) wouldn't believe my claims. As a side note, if Gustard R26 is already sitting on your table, then you can skip ALL Musician, Denafrips and Audio-GD DACs and you can probably guess why. Later Edit: Maybe we should do something together? ;)

Sandu, I am a subscriber to your channel. Your video gave me confidence (and a couple of reviewers) to hit the “Buy Now” button about 3 hours ago for the Gustard R26. In fact, I asked Srboljub when he will be reviewing the R26 after his Ladder video. So, I’ve been thinking of an R2R DAC for several months now, especially since I just sold my Topping D90SE. The R26, Denafrips Ares II, Pontus II, Pegasus, Ladder. Schumann all came to mind. Being in Singapore, Denafrips was my first choice. Pegasus was striked off my list with their QC, faulty units, total lack of customer service, not replying emails and a couple of users’ units went missing in the mail on their way to the factory for repairs just totally put me off.

Hello! I want to thank you for the wonderful genuine and real presentation of the Gustard R26. In another review about A26 and R26 you said choose wisely and I chose R26. This dac really has a lot of soul, I've been listening to it for 100 hours now and I can't op I expressed my joy in words at the sound of it. You were the reason I decided to buy this DAC, keep up the credible and detailed presentations you make. ? Thank you!

Impressive review. I now have a clear idea of this Dac's qualities and characteristics. You have an excellent skill-set when it comes to reviewing audio equipment... probably one of the top 3 on the planet. It shows, once again, in this review. Now, having said that... I am doing a complete rebuild of my audio system and without mentioning suppliers, most of what I have done so far and will do in the future, is on the warm side (amplification/speakers etc). Now, when you mentioned that this Dac is capable of processing Roon...(not just Roon ready) I got real interested. I 've decided that I have to experience Roon... enough said. However, once you started to describe this Dac further I began to sense that it might just be the perfect partner in my final system. Much gratitude for this review and may I say, I love the clear enunciation and your choice of phrase/word structure you use in describing audio equipment. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!👌

Hi Srboljub, just to thank you for your review and impressions, which in my opinion are very accurate and complete, concerning the way how music flows from R26. After living about 2 weeks with this DAC I can say that I’ve found a very nice balance for sound stage (huge and able to give information about instrument placement), detail (allowing to discover a lot of music nuances, never heard before, without being analytical and cold), transparency (extremely neutral, not emphasizing any range in the frequency response, sounding quite flat on the audible band and, like said, more on the dry side especially noticed on the middle band), pace (extremely dynamic from top end to low end, presenting very nicely decays of instruments) and silent (dead silent adding the sense of truly darkness when nothing is there to be reproduce). Overall, this is very musical DAC giving great sense of realism, presence and naturalness, excelling in bringing the emotion of music, especially live recorded music.

Believe the hype, really!!! Like many, I have had hit and miss results going on reviews but this piece of kit is an absolute bargain no question. Mine just arrived the other day and even on startup it sounded great, but like many have said, it needs about 100 hours running in, although mine is literally improving by the hour shortly after getting it up and running. Even at this stage it is astonishing, finding a way to present incredible musical detail but in a very balanced and natural way. Again, as others have said, it has an incredible sense of "air" and dimensionality with fantastic soundstaging. I came from a great little budget dac, the Geshelli J2, but wanted to try an R to R dac, although I didn't necessarily want to spend the very big bucks for the Holo models or higher Denafrips. Whilst I haven't heard those dacs in person, I can't honestly imagine they will be that much better, if at all, than this Gustard, which is end stage for me in all honesty. And a couple of tips. Assuming you are going in via PCM, I found the sound to improve noticeably if you set the PCM NOS to ON. This bypasses the internal FIR filters sending the signal direct to the ladder array (to my mind, a bit like a tone defeat on an amp). This will disable your variable volume control and also the PCM Filters, but overall I was happy to sacrifice those for the better sound. Btw, the PCM Filer control is useful though if you want to tweak the sound character of the dac, and no doubt users will experiment with the filters and the direct NOS signal to see which they prefer. I imagine setting DSD Direct to ON will have similar results if you use DSD material. Also, I have never really bothered with Bluetooth, but even this functionality is amazing in that the receiver is incredibly stable and the sound is astonishing bearing in mind the limitations of the format. I have yet to try the USB or Ethernet inputs, but no doubt they will be stunning too. And apparently in the coming month or so there will be a firmware update to include Tidal Connect, happy days. I run the unit with a great little Primare DD15 CD transport, but am looking at other options to further improve things as the transport definitely makes a difference if you are using CD. And if it helps, in testing transports I was seriously underwhelmed by the Audiolab, the current mid price favorite. The same goes for the Leek and even the more expensive Cyrus transports. As I say, I may explore more exotic transports but the Primare is great for the money. Finally, Gustard Support are incredibly responsive and helpful, I have raised a number of queries with them via email and they have been great. Anyway, I hope this helps if you are considering this piece of kit, just buy it, you will thank me!

I bought the R26 and this review is spot on. The funny thing is, it took owning the DAC for 2 weeks to really understand what the reviewer is talking about. A big surprise, I like "muddy, grainy" and I don't really like "delta-sigma like attributes". I think my old Ares II is not better, but more toe tappingly fun. "Tone Neatness" is the opposite of "Toe Tapper". There is such a thing as too much "pinpointing" that takes over the experience making me think that the component is a "one trick pony". I've only experienced this kinda "pinpointing" my old Audio Research VT-100 amp. I learned something new in this purchase. There are two kinds of reviewers. Those who like a "digital sound" and those that like "analog", As I make purchases based on collating multiple reviewers opinions for equipment I can't audition but still wanna hear, I should pay attention where a reviewer historically lies between those two sounds.

Very accurate review based on my own experience with this DAC. I was looking for an upgrade to my Terminator II and bought the R26 based on Sandu's review as a stopgap - lol it turned out to be the upgrade I was looking for, and I promptly sold the Terminator. My main system is as follows: Melco S100 ethernet switch using the fiber optic output->Lumin P1->Singxer SU-6 DDC->Gustard R26->Gryphon Diablo 300->B&W 804 D4. Cabling is a combination of higher-end Transparent and Audioquest cables. My system is highly resolving, even cable upgrades and isolation tweaks clearly register, and the R26 is what my system needed synergistically speaking. If you are in the market for a DAC and don't want to spend Holo May or Terminator Plus money, then buy this DAC if the R2R sound is what you like. FYI as an aside, my next experiment is an MSB Discrete DAC with dual power supply in a head-to-head with the R26. The MSB dealer in my town is a guy I buy most of my gear from, so he's down for loaning me the MSB for an extended in-home demo, super interested how well the R26 holds up when compared to the real high-end stuff.

That's a great system! If you listen to Jay's Audio Lab demo's you will see that Luxman M10X surpasses even Gryphon Essence easily - stronger bass and much more air in the treble. From what I heard via youtube, the "lower" end MSB Dacs are beaten by Holo May, only the top two MSB models pull away from it: MSB Reference and MSB Select2. There is also a demo comparison with MSC Discrete where I couldn't separate it from Gustard X26, with both being beaten by Holo May. As I understand it, Holo May was basically intended as a Chinese version of higher end MSB for the masses. Also if you get a streamer with i2S output like Manu Ultra IIA, you can bypass the Singxer and eliminate all USB from your system.
@michaelmityok10012 жыл бұрын
@@connorduke4619 had the May on loan in my system just before I bought the Terminator, good DAC especially for soundstage dimension, didn't really impress me as far as dynamics and resolution, ended up buying the Terminator instead. Didn't have the space or money for separates so I went for an integrated, the Diablo 300 was my preference over the Luxman 509x and 590AXII by some ways, the Accuphase E-800 was a bit better in the midrange but fell short in bass definition and treble extension. Auditioned lots of amps using MSB stacks at my B&W dealer and was always blown away by them, yes even the Discrete was clearly better than any sub 10K DAC I've had the chance to hear. Don't believe the May hype train unless you've had a chance to demo it versus other similar gear in your own system. This Gustard R26 is the 1st truly high-value "unicorn" piece of gear I've come across since I started in this crazy hobby, very happy for those folks who are just starting out building their systems, for most people it could be an end-game DAC!

PSA DSD is pretty resolving but not as resolving as R26 and R26 has sweeter midrange while DSD plays way too safe in the midrange. Both have similar bass tone and texture. For me (kef r3 and Yamaha as1200) tonally DSD is no match for R26 and DSD is usually compared to Denafrips Terminator! On top of it, R26 keeps getting better with break-in. I bought my R26 about 2 months ago based on word of mouth in my forums and Soundnews' glowing review. On arrival, I was not particularly impressed pitting it against my Topping D90LE. Disappointed in fact. But looking at a Soundnews comments and forums, the general consensus was a bare minimum of 100 hours burn in, ideally 3-4x that. So, I let the DAC run 24/7 for over a week, checking in from time to time. After about 300+ hours, it was a totally different beast. While I'm still playing around with it, you _totally nailed_ the R26's characteristics. The best qualities of Delta-Sigma DACs, but creamy smooth with a soundstage that is wide, high and deep. I had demoed a Denafrips Venus II at my home from a store some time back, and while I liked it, didn't think it beat my Topping enough to spring that kind of dough. This on the other hand is a game changer. Currently I haven't tried its streaming capabilities, and am using my Aurender N100H until I am 100% familiar with it. The R26 is running balanced to my BAT preamp and amp to Focal Kanta No2's. Anybody looking for DACs between $1500-4000 should put on their short list.

I agree about that brightness bias in the high : the first time I felt that was with the Focal titanium and ti-o2 tweeters, that is why I went back to cloth dome tweeters. That brightness or grain or harshness in the trebles can mimic as a ringing when listened at 85db volume. and it does not go away even with eq, it goes away either with lamp device or with source(different DAC or vinyl), or with cloth tweeter. And this is a separate topic from sound that is too analytical or too sharp or not. Early class-D amps had that problem too (along with the lack of body or fullness in the mid bass and medium). It sound a little like real time usb errors but much much smaller than dust on vinyl cracks.

I've one huge problem that stops me buying this DAC. It's the seeming inability to change the Pin out configuration on the I2S connection that I need to play SACD's natively from my PS Audio SACD/CD player. The Denafrips provide a way of doing this using the buttons. There is nothing in the Gustard manual covering this. I did see Soundnews review and then yours which are both great and I like a DAC with a volume control as I have that on my Bel Canto 3.7 that has no I2S (hence looking to change). BTW Amazon are offering the Gustard R26 at $1,400 right now as a Black Friday deal that makes it even better value!

I noticed almost immediately that everyone praising this R26 DAC are who I would consider chip DAC aficionados. They like that digital sound, and listening to many sound demos of the R26, that is exactly what I hear. Is there anyone here, like myself, that gets headaches or ear fatigue from listening to a chip DAC, that bought this R26 unit? There is a lot to like about the R26, and I am tempted to purchase one over the Pontus II 12th. But, my fear is that I will get that chip or digital sound vs that R2R analog, or Denafrips "House" sound, like I am getting out of my Ares II. I like that rich buttery analog vinyl sound I get from the Ares II, but we all know it lacks in quite a few areas, but still sounds very good. got mine the day of your review to maybe replace my SMSL M400. strait out of the box I was shure, that the M400 will be retired. the R26 blows it out of the water in almost every aspect - and that's with no burn-in time at all, so I expect some improvements still. I'm sitting here listening to my old files stunned! :-)

@josch6142 жыл бұрын
@@ilandvash6746 Yes. I had the X26 against the M400 and returned it but I was speechless when I plugged in the R26. The sound feels indeed much more polished and clean to me. Therefore it's more resolving. It's more spacious, has a longer decay and maybe even a tad more dynamic. I feel the M400 is in the lead of (sub)bass dynamics - but as I said: my R26 is fresh out of the box and this might improve. Today I packed in my M400, which I had for two years now and had it challenged against the X26, the new Cambridge and an Atoll. My guess would be, that you would not be disappointed- even more so as the R26 feels a little warmish, as I felt the M400 is. Like you, I don't know if Srboljub is using the R26's volume control or setting it to FIXED output and using an external preamp. I am using my Gustard R26 in its FIXED output (non-preamp) mode driving Holo Audio's top-of-the-line BLISS KTE (Kitsune Tuned Edition) Headphone Amp/Preamp combo, which is in turn connected to a MARCH AUDIO Class D amplifier driving a pair of PERLISTEN Model S5M three-way stand-mount loudspeakers. The combination of the above sounds VERY good, whether I'm using the R26 as a DAC connected via AES/EBU to my PRO-JECT CD Box RS2-T CD transport, or when I use it as a Roon Endpoint. The Gustard R26 punches way above its price point. My conclusion: It's much better to use an external preamp with the R26, and let it feed the full line-level quality of its analog outputs to a decent preamp/amp/loudspeaker combo. You lose considerable detail at lower volume settings on the R26. It's a DAC first and foremost - its preamp feature is a handy CONVENIENCE to be used only when necessary.

Firstly I want to complement you on the very high quality content of your reviews...you have an art of combining the subjective and objective in a very digestible fashion. AND I can confirm that what you heard with the R26 EXACTLY match my opinions. See below! I recently installed an R26 based on many reviews...although this one was a pretty hard hitter. My previous DAC was at some point highly lauded, but in my system always sounded sluggish, 2-dimensional and uninspiring. To a point I had not SERIOUSLY listened to music for years. Sure I streamed Calm Radio in the background, but with eight 6550 tubes in my power amps, this was not a particuarly cost effective way of doing things, seeing that replacement 6550s are now about $100 EACH. The R26 was installed last week, and although the initial impressions were favorable it seemed a little constricted. But after a week of solid running in, I relistened to it seriously over the last two days, and compared it with my reference CD player (I wont mention any names here). After a weeks run in-it is an entirely different beast. This is by FAR the best sound I have gotten in the last ten years. Massive sound stage, deeeeeep and agile bass, tactile holographic midrange and a sound stage you could almost walk around. I am now pulling out CDs and listening to them in entirity...something I have not done for over a decade. This is the REAL test if a component, or a system can connect emotionally. Like yourself, I noted that the top end sometimes lack that sparkle that initially can draw you in to the rhythms-unless that sparkle is actuall on the recording-in which case it is there in abundance. This DAC does not cast an artificial spotlight on the content, which on the long term could only result in listener fatigue. My speakers are flat to 25Hz-something I have confirmed with test tones, and the previous sources I have used revealed unpleasant loss of control. at the lower end-which greatly robs from the musical enjoyment. The only comparison I could make was vs. my reference CD player....a unit that sold originally for $12,000 some 18 years ago, to which I have effected enormous upgrades to component quality and the power supplies, for another $8k. So...I have about $20k into it. The Gustard-even with Wifi streaming through the Node130 sounded much cleaner, separated and controlled. And moving up to the Audiolab 6000CDT into the R26 via coax, this CD player was knocked back even further. Bear in mind that the CD-Transport and R26 are in the $2k region...about 10% of what I ended up spending on the CD player. Until now, my CD player has easily bettered quite a few high end digital sources, and I fully expected it to edge out the R26 as well. But it didn't. Adding an after market fuse (I used a HiFi Tuning one) to the R26 incrementally improved its output, with even more articultion and a slightly greater degree of bass control. I am SO impressed with the R26, I have ordered an entry level external clock to try out...an LHY OKC-1. If this is considered an improvement, I may well trade up to the OKC-2. The Gustard C18 is quite expensive. Anybody looking to move to an external word clock should note that it needs a 50 Ohm output and a 50 Ohm coax cable, instead of the more commonly used 75 Ohm ones. I ordered a LMR400 coax, although RG8x or the like should also be fine. The Gustard BNC cable is close to $200, which is more than 3x the cost of the coax I ordered.

I had a Musician Pegasus for a few weeks. Ended up having a random channel issue. Which only happened twice. Turning on standby, and back on fixed it. Although I didn't want to take a chance, so I returned it. I replaced it with the R26. I honestly feel like I prefer the Pegasus more. Even giving it's shortcomings.. The R26 has more forward sounding mids, better mid timber, cleaner bass, and quicker transients. However I find the R26 sounds rather compressed (sounds more like a chip based dac to me). It doesn't separate sounds as well, or stage as well. The Pegasus sounds holographic, where the R26 just has a tad of dimension to a wall of it's sound. The Pegasus has the most realistic sounding; cymbals, hi hats, and guitar sounds; I've ever heard. The high-mid timber shined with it. Everything just sounded more natural and not forced to me. With the mids being a little recessed on the Pegasus. They staged in the back of the soundstage. The mid-highs and highs stage much closer. Where the R26 everything sounds like everything is in the same spot on the stage, kind of jumbling the sounds. The downside is my HD660's sound poor with the Pegasus.

I bought the R26 and it's been going for over 200hrs. In comparison to my NAD M-51 it's basically identical, which says alot for the R26. I give imaging (center) edge to the NAD.

Do you experience any hum noises(from display or transformer) with your unit? Thanks

@@justasimplefox No. The R26 takes over 200hrs and that's with a signal going through it before it finally reaches its peak performance. I get noises from my tube amp, switching inputs and I think maybe I've experienced little pops from the R26 during the switching of inputs but nothing significant

Just changed the FUSE in my R26 to Gustard’s higher end fuse, $24/fuse. With only 4 hours of break in I was surprised at the improved lateral soundstaging, imaging and added fullness. Very cost effective upgrade…

And the fuse is?

Fuses DO not do a thing. Don’t drive yourself nuts with this.

How do you know which fuse makes the most difference? I've got like a ton of fuses in my dac toward the front and 1 near the iec.

Hello, how will you compare R26 with PS Audio stellar gaincell dac?
