Thanks for the very informative review. I have the Harmony DAC and HP2A headphone amp driving the Focal Utopia headphones. I am no expert but for me personally it’s the endgame I never before have been as close to the music (with recordings) IMHO absolutely worth a try! Truly outstanding musical!

It's worth a investigating if it's coming from some other part of your system like amp or DAC or something like that. Not disputing what you hear but finding it hard to accept that speakers are the reason.

A good review, thanks. I'm missing an important piece of information about the new I2S output in combination with the Gustard R26 DAC, as I also own this DAC. Is there a difference in sound compared to USB? Thanks.

This was a review that gives me hesitations right before Christmas; Using a Bluesound N130 with external linear PSU from PD creative , connected via USB to a Denafrips Hermes DDC and very addicted to the Bluos app, I'm don't know if this Volumio setup would bring me more musical joy. What do you think?

great job. Rivo+ has it all... except display. yes, i know you can use your phone. in real life there are plenty of times you may want to adjust the streamer while you're on the phone or it's in another room. for me that's a hard no on a well designed product. i enjoy their industrial design as well.

Loved your review, but I have a question. Like a lot of people, a streamer is built into one of my pieces of equipment. This seems to be the trend. What can people expect from bypassing the streamer in our equipment and using a separate streamer?

so you claim that one computer (which VOLUMIO is in particular) transfers files better than another. Strange. Why doesn't it work like that with videos, pictures and any other files? I've tried different devices as digital transport and they affect the sound in absolutely identical ways. That is, in no way.

I don't recall mention of what connections you used ? The Rivo (which I had and hated) was poorly designed for the Spdif coax output (just a buffered output from small board computer they use). It was solely designed for USB to DAC use (IMHO). How does this change from the original ? Any good amount of engineering could have filtered the 5v DC input inside this box to very low levels of noise. The PS noise really only effects the clocks and Jitter on the outputs. They also could have designed a very low noise switching PS that would cost $75-100. But peoples bias (with no knowledge or engineering background) tells them a giant toroidial transformer and linear supply always sounds better. Would love to see jitter measurements with both Power Supplies. I have not been impressed with the Volumio hardware engineering say say the least. I do love their software however ! Also in today's streamer market this is way overpriced ! Waiting to see if the SHANLING SM1.3 Streamer DAC is any good for just over $1000 US I think ?

Yep, USB on the Rivo, and you need a DAC that can pair well and handle the higher resolutions. Add Roon, and the proper DAC, and the Rivo is going to be hard to beat.

I suppose to get the full benefit in the digital path you should also power your router/modem with a linear PSU. A lot of power amplifiers, even if linear designs are moving to switched mode PSUs now. A linear PSU option for these would be interesting but not holding my breath.

Hi, does Volumio support multiple genre random playlists like LMS/piCorePlayer? In other words can I select one or several genres from my music library to be played randomly? For me that would be a deal maker/breaker. Thanks
@pablovi77
@pablovi77 Күн бұрын
No, Volumio doesn’t even do shuffle or randomized playing, you can download a plug in, but it’s very basic, and chooses from your entire library. It’s a very slow UI if you have a big library, at least on RPi 4.
@mikecees2230

@@pablovi77 Seems quite primitive considering that I've been doing this with LMS (now Lyrion) for 15 years or so. Roon can also do this but it's a bit fiddly and not to mention costly.
@pablovi77
@pablovi77 Күн бұрын
@@mikecees2230 It is quite rudimentary, and that’s why I stopped paying for it, only have the free version on an RPi, the sound is great though. You can even install LMS, but in version 3 it was quite buggy, so I stopped doing that. I only use it for my library, and use the randomizer plugin.

Thank you for the review. I would go with the Halo Red over Volumio. Have the Halo DAC very well made and expect the same for the Red. Reviews of the Volumio mention buggy sofware, not an issue if using Roon. I expect the Halo Red would just work, so Red with a good power cable, done. But my Innous Zen is hard to beat, very good software that is always being improved and updated, CD ripper, internal hard disk, wonderful streamer, 5 years + hasn't missed a beat.

It's amazing that a streamer or a power supply for one can make much of a difference. I wonder where that gets introduced. Do the DACs struggle to keep time with the clock? Does the noise from the PSU travel along the connections to the DAC? Audio is such a deep hole and its fascinating to hear where and how subtle tweaks make a difference.

I have the Rivo Black with the Farad Super3 LPS... I also added a Pangea split USB cable, an ifi iPurifier3, the ifi iSilencer, a capacitor bank in between the Farad and the Rivo, with a StackAudio SmoothLan on the ethernet cable from the LHY SW8 network switch. This streamer is so revealing, I have the Mercury here, a Cabasse Abyss, a WiiM Ultra and Pro. The Rivo, with this mess of attachments, leaves all of these streamers in the dust. Then add the Roon Nucleus One to the chain, and the ToneWinner AD-1PRE+ that easily streams 32bit at 768kHZ. Audio Nirvana. Yes, the Rivo ROCKS!
