This work is a masterclass of orchestration! Gustav Mahler, one of the best composers of the twentieth century!

A truly tragic story told not only by the poem but the music that accompanies it. Mahler excellently composed this work of art to tell the tale that, sadly, also became true for himself.

I admire any interpreter of this cycle. I would be reduced to a sobbing mess by the time I reached the third song and be unable to continue. I once tried to read the entire collection of those poems by Rückert. It was impossible. Every 6th poem or so I had to take a break, because they are all so devestatingly sad.

Thank you so much for the historical context of it. It brought tears in my eyes. I studied classical music, but I didn't know all of that.

Im reading “Neurotribes” by Steve Silberman, he talks about how a psychologist voiced his objections to physical punishment of mentally “retarded” children as a corrective measure (which was popular in the 1960’s). They transferred him to another institution. He began writing a book on his experiences there, but ended up throwing the manuscript into the fireplace. That night he heard melancholic music in his dream, in German (which he did not speak) as he was talking to a colleague on the phone he hummed parts of it, and the colleague identified it as Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder.

I came across these songs via Reginald Hill. His amazing Dalziel and Pascoe books are anything but simple procedurals. And On Beulah Heights which features this cycle is amazing. As is this music.

For an alternative interpretation of these songs read Orfeo by Richard Powers. The book is as profound and moving as the songs themselves as it follows the life of a musician-composer called Peter Els. Powers is as spellbinding in his writing as Mahler is in his songs.

Beautifully reflective and sad, as Mahler had great capacity for reflection. I came here after hearing Richard Strauss' "Death and Transfiguration". Reading comments here, it seems there are some who cannot go very deep in thought; that I consider a tragedy of our non-reflective age. Perhaps we will come to greater understanding and leave such superficial thinking.
