The city of Minsk has a long history dating back more than 900 years. It is believed to have been founded in the 11th century by Prince Rurik of the Rurika dynasty. During this period, Minsk was a fortified settlement that developed as a major trade and craft center.
Today the city exalts an indisputable pride. Minsk is Minsk, without influences, it doesn't look like any other European capital. Order, cleanliness, homogeneity, have no cracks.
In the 14th century, Minsk became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and, later, the Kingdom of Poland. During this time, the city suffered several conflicts and changes of government. In the 16th century, Minsk was devastated by a huge fire, but it was quickly rebuilt.
It may come as a surprise to many the lively colors, the hubbub, Minsk is far from the boring city that many imagine. Instead, it's a feast for the eyes.
In the 17th century, Minsk was occupied by Russian troops during the Russo-Polish War and became part of the Empire. During Russian rule, the city experienced economic growth and became an important commercial and administrative center in the region.
Walking around Minsk is to be surprised at every step. Every man of culture should, once in his life, visit the Belarusian capital.
During the 19th century Minsk developed as an important cultural and educational center. Schools, theaters and libraries were built, and the city became a focus of Belarusian intellectual and cultural life.
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Minsk became the capital of the independent Republic of Belarus. It has undergone significant development in terms of infrastructure, economy, and cultural life, and remains the political and cultural center of the country.
After being heavily damaged during World War II, much of the city was rebuilt in a functionalist Soviet style of architecture. However, in recent decades there has been an effort to develop new modern structures and renovate historic buildings.
