When you have a gusty day, landings can become tricky. On a recent flight, I encountered a gusty day and wanted to share it with you. In this video, I will talk you through a gusty crosswind landing.
Please let me know in the comments below if today's video helped you in your aviation journey.

so many pilots who post on youtube post only the videos of the perfect landing, flying in clear blue, smooth as glass air. I appreciate you sharing your experiences and lessons learned in the air we find ourselves in most often: bumpy and breezy. Then showing us how to improve our skills in those environments.

I think this is VERY important for any instructor to take their students up on a gusty day. My IFR instructor who works for Skywest now took me to Wachula on a 28K Gusting day!! It was hell and my hands were sweating. I did learn that I could do it and now after owning my own plane and flying to the midwest alot where it's very windy, I'm so freaking glad I know I can land in gusts that high. It's definitely nerve racking when you see Envoy have to do a go around in front of you because they couldn't make it in but I did! I wasn't lined up at first but I made it though I was definitely ready to be on the ground. If you're an instructor reading this, take your students up in high gusty days, show them that they can in fact land!!! They won't have you when they are alone.

Mate this is extremely accurate as I experienced it yesterday gusting 22kts from Tower info up to 29kts on windy app. I bounced and called a go around and landed rather smooth 2nd attempt. Very happy as a learning pilot in training that I did that as you said a Go around is sometimes needed and definitely was in my scenario as it happened to be gusting more on 1st approach. Thanks for the great aviation content I’m glad I just found the channel 🛩🤙🏼

Every once in a while the winds will gust in Maryland for us when certain weather systems arrive, but what I've noticed is that the winds generally are a lot calmer in recent years than when I first began my training in 2008. That year it seemed as if every other day the winds were strong and turbulent; in fact the first day I showed up for training I only got a tour of the fleet because the winds were gusting 35-40 kts. The airports were also bordering the Chesapeake so we also had to contend with shifting winds because of our proximity to the water. But that was great because it allowed me to conquer my fears of, as you said, "riding the waves," and really getting a handle on reacting appropriately to normal air and mechanical turbulence on approach, as well as crosswinds. Recently, I've had to chase those days when it's windy enough for a challenging flight but not too dangerous; they don't happen nearly as often. I will say, though, it's easier to mitigate with a twin.

I normally land short, 80 mph, and 40 degrees of flaps on final. Yesterday, it was gusty with a heavy cross wind, so I added 10 mph to final at 90 with 20 degrees of flaps. I was still bouncing around and fighting to stay on center. What was particularly unnerving was when the wind got under my wing when turning in the pattern. I was careful to fly a wider pattern with shallower turns. Maybe 20 degrees. Seeing you flying this while saying calm encourages me to believe that I can get better. I will probably get together with an instructor to master this skill.

Took the wife flying in my Flight Design CT the other day. First time she had flown with me in decades. Put in 30 degrees flaps ( usually 15 is plenty) to have a nice slow touch down. And we did, till a small gust put us airborne again. I told her she was lucky to get two landings for the price of one. I think she bought it.

Great instructional video as always. Just curious, why is carburetor heat so important during the landing? I’m assuming the weather is quite warm already based on your attire. What is the benefit to adding the exhaust manifold heat to the carb when there’s no cold/icing conditions? Thanks
@MzeroAFlightTraining
@MzeroAFlightTraining 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thanks for watching! Carb icing can occur even at high temperatures in Florida! The reason for this because the venturi that mixes fuel/air in a carburetor causes the air to drop in both pressure and temperature. This can cause icing with water vapor in the air if the temperature in the venturi drops below freezing. If you need more clarification please reach out to us at support@mzeroa.com! Fly safe!

Jason you are the man, I really enjoy your videos!! I have a crosswind landing problem and I have identified two problems from this situation. I have a hard time distinguishing the direction the wind is blowing and I get confused as to the aileron/ rudder combination to apply. My instructor tells me to turn the aileron into the wind and use rudder to point the nose, but when I do that it just does not feel natural as I try to keep centerline. Help!! Someone Help!
@MzeroAFlightTraining
@MzeroAFlightTraining 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony! Thanks for reaching out! Glad our videos have helped. Your CFI is right. It will take time! For now, keep an eye on the nose of where it is in relation to the centerline. That will help you decide where you need to add rudder. When you add rudder, use opposite aileron so that you can compensate for drifting. Hope this helps! If you need more help please reach out to us at support@mzeroa.com. Fly safe!
