Actually, you think your bone broth is concentrate in collagen but it is not. The purpose of cooking all day long (since you’re asking) is to come to the point when the bone deteriorates. When you press the bone with two fingers, it must be soft like a sponge and fall in pieces. That means all the collagen and nutrients escaped from the bone. Then when your broth has cooled down, it should turn into gelatine, a solid structure that you can cut with a knife. Your broth is still liquid. The only way to get this solid structure is the slow cooking. You broth is certainly not bad, but you just didn’t get the maximum from your bones. But your dog will get it. 😊

Hi Rose! You’re right, but I choose to do it this way because the long cooking process causes histamines to accumulate, and makes me itchy😣 because I have a lot allergies and am sensitive to histamines. My broth is still gelatinous, but I could try pressure cooking it a little longer to help the bones break down more. I’ll give it a try and see. But you’re right, this way I am able to use the scape as dog food. Lol. Thanks for the comment/suggestion!

Whether you cook it for a short amount of time or a long amount of time you are still extracting all the things. And reducing it to a more concentrated amount makes a lot of sense, you don’t lose anything, but you might find you could do another batch with those bones.

Hello! I know I could technically add 1/3 stalk of celery per serving but I try not to add any FODMAP containing ingredients to my bone both to ensure that it doesn’t irritate my gut. Especially if I’m making it because of a flare up rather than just meal prep purposes. I also typically don’t buy celery because it is so difficult to use it all up 1/3 of a stalk at a time.😆

Awww thanks! Reducing fodmaps in the diet will definitely help to reduce the inflammation in your mom’s gut lining that is causing little pockets to form. There is also a high probability that she has leaky gut and has possibly developed some food allergies over the years, which may be showing up as an “autoimmune” issue or generalized widespread inflammation like fibromyalgia. If this is the case, I would really recommend keeping a food journal and going through a full elimination diet as described in my low FODMAP diet explained video to find all of her triggers. That’s great! I never went full carnivore but I would eat just meat for some meals when my gastritis flared up. I found that eliminating the fiber that was hard to digest was really helpful for me. I don’t really eat sugar, I never had much of a sweet tooth, but I know doing so would really help to improve the composition of your microbiome.

Awww I’m so sorry to hear that - crohns sucks! But the low FODMAP diet has been shown to help. Also, check out my low FODMAP diet explained video if you haven’t already. You could use the framework of an elimination diet to figure out if he has any undiagnosed food allergies. Regularly consuming an allergen would cause a sustained allergic reaction that would cause the inflammation and ulceration seen in crohns and mimic an autoimmune condition. I was on my way to a crohns diagnosis but discovered that I was allergic to garlic, onions, and wheat. Once I removed them from my diet, all my symptoms went away and after a few months, my gut was able to heal itself. There’s so much we can do for that type of condition, not just take an injection that shuts off our immune system. I wish you and your son the best of luck on your digestive journey. I’m rooting for you!

Garlic, onions, celery, nightshades (like tomatoes), or vinegars, paprika, or peppers, can be bad if you have FODMAP sensitivity or histamine resistance. Sometimes the acidity in lemons/limes can also be too much. It tastes good without anything anyway, just some salt maybe. You can add it to a soup if it doesn't taste too good

Hi, Patricia. Yeah, I would also often get a low grade fever when I would have flare ups. Since I also have food allergies I figured my immune system was reacting to something, but yours must not be a wheat allergy if sourdough is fine. Hmmm. It does take a few years of being a detective, but as long as you pay attention the things like this and identify patterns, you’ll eventually figure out what’s triggering you. Hang in there.☺️

Hello. I’ve never done it in a slow cooker, but I don’t see why not. Most people when they make bone broth on the stove cook it for 24-48 hrs, which would be more similar in a slow cooker. I don’t do it that way because the longer something cooks the more it builds up histamines which I have an issue with sometimes so just be wary of that. Best of luck. Hope your daughter feels better.

Oh my.. I have been dumping my chicken bones and carcasses away😟 I will save in freezer and make bone broth!! I actually made some with oxtails and it was gelatinous and yummy! Scraped off all the fat on top and actually ate the oxtails and drank the delicious “soup” didn’t know it was bone broth😋

I typically take them for 2 weeks after a course of antibiotics or after I get food poisoning or something, or once a quarter for maintenance. Hello. You just have to rest when you can, when you’re not at work. This means going to bed early and saying no to social engagements so that you can stay in rest. I’d also recommend eating soups that are easy to digest, and no snacking throughout the day so that your digestive system can rest also. Also be mentally prepared that it takes time to heal. I got food poisoning about a month ago and then had bad allergic reaction when we went out to eat a couple of weeks ago (I shouldn’t have done that - it’s never worth it) and my stomach still feels a bit tender. I can’t take any days off to rest as a full time mother but I just try to go to bed early and rest when I can. Hang in there.❤️

Hi Annemarie, I’m so sorry to hear that you’re having such a rough time. People with poor digestion often have an issue digesting fats - especially if you’ve had your gallbladder removed. If you refrigerate the broth and then scoop off the fat that collects on top, then it really wouldn’t be so high in fat to cause an issue. Similarly, veggies are not high in fat. If you’re having issues with regurgitation with a wide variety of foods, I would think you might have an issue with low stomach acid. Depending on how bad the situation is, this can cause severe indigestion and regurgitation due to not being able to keep your lower esophageal sphincter closed. Having low stomach acid also prevents the body from producing digestive enzymes and bile to help you breakdown and digest food. If you’re a person that gets acid reflux and takes antacids this could be the issue that you might want to explore. I know it might feel that you have too much acid, but problem is actually that the acid is getting to the wrong place, and that’s because the acid is too weak to keep the lower esophageal sphincter closed. Does that sound like it could be the issue?

You can use an old school pressure cooker or just a regular pot on the stove. It will take waaay longer tho. Also apparently the longer you cook something the more histamines accumulate. I don’t know if that’s an issue for you, but it is something you might want to be aware of if you follow the recipe and cook it all day on the stove and it still seems to disagree with you, that could be why.

Absolutely! You can use an old school pressure cooker on the stove top and the recipe will be pretty much the same, or just a regular pot, but that will take waaay longer. Some people boil it for like 24 hrs to pull out all of the collagen. It can totally be done, but just be aware that if you use that method, the longer cook time can increase the level of histamines in the broth which may cause negative symptoms for you. You really won’t know until you try it, but just be aware that that can happen.😉

Unfortunately we are all living in a very toxic environment and we can't really avoid it nowadays. If that's something you're concerned about, don't make it. I personally like to view everything in life as a tradeoff, and feel like the risk is worth the reward. Nothing is perfect. Plus, I'm probably consuming more toxic metals/chemicals from breathing the air living near the freeway. I'm not too worried about the homemade bone broth, but that you for bringing that to my attention. :)

I suppose you could skip it, but then you won’t have as much collagen per serving. If your just doing it for the flavor, that’s fine, but if you’re trying to use the collagen in brown broth to repair a leaky gut, I would recommend cooking out some of the liquid to concentrate the collagen. I've never used beef bones, but I don't see why not! I would recommend saving the fat that accumulates on the top of your broth after you refrigerate it. Store it in a jar in the fridge and you can use it as cooking fat for up to 2 weeks! :)

Hi Lexi! I wouldn’t recommend it. The pressure cooking process is what’s allowing us to pull all of the healing collagen out of the bones. Some people do to cook their bone broth on the stovetop over 2 days, but I don’t recommend that because the longer you cook it, the more histamines will build up, and we don’t want to be throwing histamines on the fire that is an ibs flare up or allergic reaction.😉

Hello! Great question! You could consume it without skimming the fat, especially if your body is more fat adapted, or if you eating a high fat/low carb diet like keto. But for most people (especially if you don't have a gallbladder), I would recommend skimming off the fat, which makes it easier to digest. DON'T THROW IT AWAY THOUGH. Save it in a mason jar in the fridge and use it as your cooking fat for up to 2 weeks! ;)

Mannitol, which is a polyol (the "p' in FODMAP) - it is a sugar alcohol. 2 stalks is high in mannitol and will most likely cause symptoms in people with ibs. 1/3 a stalk (0.53 oz) is moderately high is mannitol, and 0.35 oz is considered to be the Low FODMAP serving size, according to Monash University's Fodmap App, and should be well tolerated by most people with ibs. HOWEVER - this is such a small amount, I generally opt to skip celery entirely. Hope that was helpful. :)

IBS is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach that includes diet, stress management, improved sleep, exercise, etc. a whole lifestyle really - one soup isn’t going to do it. I believe it’s important to include homemade bone broth in the diet because it has collagen that will help to support a healthy gut lining, but it’s important to realize that there’s no quick fix, no short cut, no magic bullet - just dedication and hard work, but it’s worth it and you can do it!

Good luck finding one without garlic and onion. The bigger problem is that food products that are convenient started out as food, but during the processing, chemicals have been added as preservatives and they usually encounter harsh disinfectants because factories are dirty and since it’s not technically an ingredient, the companies don’t have to list it on the label. Through this process, something that has started out as food, is no longer food. It’s not good for you, and it certainly won’t heal your gut. I don’t know what you’re eating now and packaged bone broth would be better than a diet of chicken nuggets and top ramen, but in my experience, to truly heal, it’s takes more work than that. Unfortunately there are no shortcuts in life, and if you don’t make the time to prioritize your health and eat home cooked food, nothing will change. Sorry.

Bone broth is great and than you destroy it with carbohydrates. IBS feeds off carbohydrates literally. Very flawed advice, its good for maybe managing but not reversing.. Beef bones broth add salt and DONE. IBS reversed. Could do this VOD in 5mins

If you want to make your bone broth that way, that’s fine, but it’s not true that all carbohydrates trigger ibs. FODMAP is an acronym for certain carbohydrates that aren’t broken down and absorbed properly and can trigger ibs symptoms. Example-If you eat any carbohydrates and dont clean teeth you get cavities ie you shouldn't eat something that can cut thru the toughest thing in our body enamel . Animal food never does this. IBS feed off carbs no matter what or which. Its why in general they say you cant reverse IBS only treat symptoms. Because eating carbs feeds. Not to mention gingivitis can never reverse it if you eat any carbs. We dont have the organs to break down carbs correctly, not to even talk about the known carcinogens and oxalates in every day veggies. Truly scary that the public isnt being told this even today. @@gritandgroceries
