These guys are probibly the 2 best guitar players in the world "in their style". Hot isn't big enough of a word to describe them. I live in the Central Southern United States. We have Blues, Rock, Bluegrass, Country and Classical music all around us. Not too many Jazz players unless you go North to the Indiana University campus. I wish these guys would pass through some time. What a treat it would be. P.S. They were just messing around. Imagine what they could really do!

tthe very intro when alex and guthrie start jamming , alex's first couple of lines of soloing sounds like should be part of the junglee book music with guthrie giving a funky groove and good chords in the background ! JUST SIMPLY AMAZING! by far the wo best guitarsists inthe world , they both can play all different styles of music in their playing and have a great melodic sense!

Alex is damn underrated, IMO He's on the same level with Guthrie.. his harmonic knowledge, bebop lines and spontaneous creativity are impressive, even Ron Thal is boring in comparison (and i appreciate Ron Thal a lot)

Absolutely. Both are great and have the qualities you expressed. There are a lot of great starving guitar players. Pay attention to melody and you will sell records. Play at the speed of light and impress a few young players.We all like different styles and have different opinions on what is good. You hit the nail on the head with these guys.

Steve Vai is still much more of a unique player than Govan or Hutchings though. He created a style so vastly different from anything else that came before him up. Guthrie Govan is basically just an amalgamation of a bunch of 80s shredders (including a large Steve Vai influence), blues players, and 80s/90s fusion players. He's still one of the best on the planet right now, but Steve Vai still just about edges him out in my books, when you look at musicianship as a whole (uniqueness, playing/technique, composition, improvisation etc...). Shawn Lane and Allan Holdsworth are my top 2 personally.

These two are so close I'm not even going to pretend I can discern who is the best, but to me its about enjoying the incredible talents of both. So many great guitarists around now, especially some of the female ones, but for my taste these guys are both balancing together on the capstone of a great pyramid of guitarists.

Guthrie is clearly superior, a lot cleaner and fuller sounding although that could just be the set up. I love them both though. Hutchings couldn't write a "Regret" or "Drive Home" solo.

@@Cheximus lol nope. GG is not "clearly superior" and to say he is shows you are either clueless about guitar playing or are being influenced by GG's internet reputation. AH has all the technique of GG, the multi facets of GG, and - as is often claimed - a better soloist and composer than GG. The point is, this vid shows two people playing each other's licks with ease. There is no "clearly superior" guitarist in the clip.

No, that's not why. It's a general gear thing, strings don't affect tone that much. Obviously, Alex hadn't adjusted the tone to his preference before the video was shot, his tone sounds splendid in the other vids of him. And referring to your comment about string thickness affecting tone, here's a list of guitarists who use, or have used, .008 strings: Allan Holdsworth Tony Iommi Billy Gibbons Brian May Yngwie Malmsteen Shawn Lane Frank Marino You don't NEED thick strings to get a thick tone.
