*Do you think Guthrie Govan the best guitarist in the world?* 🤯

I like Guthrie but I also like late great Allan Holdsworth. It's hard to say if any of the two guitarist is the best but these two definitely have a vast music vocabulary! RIP Allan Holdsworth 🎸

I would say he’s probably the “most accomplished” guitarist in the world. It’s hard for me to call him “the best” when there’s a handful of other guitarists I’d rather listen to. Max Ostro, Julian Lage, and Jeff Beck just to provide a few examples. I guess my main issue with Guthrie is that it’s just too damn much. He just overplays too much for me. Although Max has learned a lot from Guthrie, I feel he is more refined and smooth. Less alien shred and chicken picking. I prefer the tone from his light touch. Sometimes less really can be more. 🤷🏻♂️

There are so many, with different styles: it makes no sense to claim there is a "best one"... And music is not a competition.

As usual… speechless. I don’t think enough people honestly realize what a gift it is to hear this man. I know people will argue about the goat of guitarist, but if there was ever a such title to be given out I just don’t see how it wouldn’t be Guthrie, it would blow people away if they even understood half of what this man is honestly capable of, I’ve played guitar and been in music for 25 years, I’ve heard 98 percent of everyone there is, the popular guys down to the guys hardly no knows who can shred off the fret board. But in terms of totality, Guthrie can play every single style, not just play and imitate the greats in their respective genre, but then play something that outshines everyone because of how unique and different, and how soulful his playing hits you while also blowing you away while thinking… how is this possible. His chicken pickin is very good, his classical perfect, jazz is unreal, his blues and more fusion rock stuff is crazy, and if he want to play heavy that’s not a problem, and lastly I’ve never seen someone improvise on first takes and play something that most of the greats couldn’t come up with in a week.

I imagine it's a bit like listening to Charlie Christian or Django Reinhardt in period. Something new and mind-blowing but not having a historical context yet to fit it into. I'm not sure Guthrie Govan will rise to the fame of these trailblazers because the trail he cuts is so impossibly difficult for others to follow. He's likely to be another Allan Holdsworth in the grand scheme of things. I think he's the best around right now with the possible exception of Matteo Mancuso. They are both individual and creative and exceptionally gifted as well as well disciplined. Luv and Peace.

It always inspires me. The best guitarist that I have ever seen ❤

There's nothing "crazy" about Mr Govan's guitar playing here. He's doing standard stuff at a very high level of accomplishment. Mr Govan is, among other things, a superb, world class improvisor. Who are these idiots talking through this performance? "Hey, let's go check out Guthrie Govan at a small, intimate venue, & yak & yammer thorough the entire performance, because it's really all about us!" These oblivious boneheads should be forced to gargle with Sani-Flush, prior to an application of crazy glue lipstick for the lot of them. Bloody hell! I'd especially enjoy hearing Mr Govan play non-tempered scales in free time, sitting in with Evan Parker, Mette Rasmussen, Barry Guy, and Mark Sanders. Thank you Essex Recording Studios for posting this great clip. CHEERS!

This is a simulation of being a jazz guitarist, but it will definitely convince any, more rock and metal audiences, who think that playing any chord with a 7th or a 9th, is jazz. Guthrie's basslines here are good, but of course sticking only in the very basic stuff of course. This is basically just fast rhythm n blues. But to each their own. The sax guy is actually jazzing it up here, he is the jazzer. Personally, i never get into these " jukebox" players that simulate other styles- Even Danny Gatton, the master that he was, was just like this, a mimic. Guthrie is good, but people are licking his hole at this point. Everyone is always looking for some " master" player that can do everything. Well they can't. Jack of all trades, master of none.
@larsheuker9 ай бұрын
Guthries more like a rock fusion player. Im not sure if anyones ever really tried to see him in a pure jazz way
@GS446919 ай бұрын
'This is a simulation of being a jazz guitarist'. No its not, and you took way too long to say nothing about what you consider jazz. Instead, you seemed to go with the classic internet contrarian position, 'I'm the ultimate arbiter of what is and what isn't jazz, so you guys are dumb'. Perhaps this is what constitues 'edgy' in 2024.
@EssexRecordingStudios9 ай бұрын
I think he's a versatile player that just enjoys playing and fusing his style with whoever he happens to be playing with. In this case, he's alongside a jazz saxophonist
@MrSlimfinger9 ай бұрын
This is the correct answer. It's two incredibly accomplished and proficient musicians playing music together, in a "jazzy style" if you will. Yes he plays a walking bass line, throws in some chromaticism and extended chords, with a guitar, effects and a playing style that might not fit in the "trad jazz box". Must suck to be stuck in a box though.@@EssexRecordingStudios

I find it odd that one can get salty for people liking something they dont like as much... thats like berating someone for liking spicy curry because you think curry should only be mild. I think this ignores how subjective and personal music is (just like curry). No one person can define what "Jazz Master" is supposed to be i think, its up to the listeners to decide and thats totally fine! It would be boring to have 1 definition of "mastered" music we all have to follow under threat of someone taking our heads off...
