I was sitting about 1.5 meters away from his nose as he recorded this. Even after 5 great takes on the same track he wouldn't ever play it save and settle on a few ideas as he went along. I couldn't make out a single thing he ever repeated. To be honest, I think he barely had time to listen to the tracks before heading to the session, he was sight reading the chords and structures throughout, he's THAT good.

When I first heard GG, I noticed some of his legato runs and large interval jumps/slides are Vai-inspired, but GG goes so far beyond Vai. Blues, jazz, even country-style double stops. Yet he blends it all perfectly and puts his own stamp on it. Just astonishing - he is from another planet. (Also inspiring to us older guys that he's 41 - older than me ;-)

It's interesting when you play guitar and you look up to someone like him. I am no longer a beginner but I'm certainly not nearly as good as him. But what you can see in players like him among others, is he plays a backing track and he plays the lead guitar he hears in his head. I have heard many backing tracks and I've had some killer lead guitar go through my head, certainly not anything less than what I hear from him. It is my belief that anyone who likes guitar can do this, but it is more important to be able to play it I'm real time, before it disappears from your mind forever. And that is just what you see going on here. What a great guitarist must do is escape from the guitar. Don't let the guitar control you, don't let scales bound you, a guitarist must play the guitar, and not let the guitar play the guitarist. So we you must essentially become one with the guitar. No but in all reality, stop what you're doing and think about the mood you're in. Don't try to force a mood upon yourself. If you're tired and hungry, then embrace it, if you're happy and unrestricted then embrace it, don't think about how you feel, just feel. Take away your self-consciousness and just be. Now put a guitar in your head and play what you feel. That is how this man plays, and you can do it too.

That's not the idea - although I know where you are coming from - but the inspiration of what he has achieved through hard work and natural talent can inspire us mere mortals to achieve better things - the internet allows far greater learning possibilities than we had 40 years ago, slowing down a 45 RPM record to 33 to learn a Rory Gallagher, Richie Blackmore or Jan Ackerman solo - 3 to 5 hours a day every day (actually more some times) and trying to tune to a different key then transposing up ) - that's all we had. Now the videos, tab and backing tracks are there - all you need is time and dedication - and it can be done - not to Gutheries standards if you don't have that natural talent (which I don't) but enough to become a professional musician - studying his methods can make you a better player and faster than anything we had in the past - back in the day the players that were innovators and influenced today's players had no internet - crap gear and no reference material except sheet music (which most couldn't read) but what was in their heads or what they had heard - keep trying and you'll get there - but you really have to try and commit.
