It's kind of funny how even though I'm primarily a trumpet player, I've always been able to learn a lot from guitar players about phrasing, attacks, note spacing- you name it- and apply it to the trumpet. Some musicians like Guthrie are just so full of musicality that it makes it easy for the rest of us to take away something from it.

There's always 1-2 people on each page of comment that says they want to quit, i can't believe it's not the opposite - this guy motivates me like no other guitarist! I just want to learn all his shit! I finally learned the intro to Waves the other day, and it's probably gonna take me fucking years to get down that song anyway, since i'm no good at shredding (never delved into it), but discipline and continued practice pays off! Sticking with something ultimately builds muscle memory.

Sam Bell he plays with so much soul,. & He compliments the music..doesn't scream his guitar trying to speed through scales & tricks to boast. Hes an amazing musician. Sometimes you gotta kick ass subtlety. Not to say he's not aggressive. But when the time is right. You have to really love & understand music to play at this level

@@mikeybct - You're right, too many guitar player try too hard to speed their way through scales and tapping and such and sacrifice phrasing, rhythm, timing, spacing etc.. in the process. Also, many other players simply sound too much like everyone else, they don't have their own unique style, but Guthrie definitely has that something special!!!

Hearing Guthrie's art makes me feel so many emotions, its crazy how something that sounds so amazing can bring tears to your eyes out of pure joy. I literally listen to his songs and giggle at how good i feel when I hear them. Music has literally saved my life and I'm so grateful to be alive at this time now, just so I can hear, and feel, more.

GG is the actual guitar god, but come on, Becker was on another level, beyond... and of course this might be a matter of taste but for me, Jason achieved the Olympus at an age simple mortals are just wandering. Yeah, they have different styles and techniques... I'm not fighting anyone, I enjoy both and just wish Jason was able to play.

I said 15/20 years ago when I first heard Guthrie Govan play when he worked for the magazine “Guitar Techniques” and I said he would one day be recognised as the phenomenon that he is. I’ll never forget this, I emailed Matthias IA Eklundh about him and he at the time said he never heard of him! The rest is history 🎸

The thing about Guthrie, is he's not a shred guy who tries playing other styles, he's legitimately well versed as a guitarist in all styles...Like his blues and jazz come from a real place. Not just a basic understanding of what's needed... For me that's what sets him apart!

4:48 sounds like a mistake, but he repeats what he played like saying "I actually meant to play that note there"... I heard once that there are no wrong notes in jazz, if a note sounds wrong, play it 3 times more and it will sound right

From my view there are very few musicians that embody their instruments. They are capable of saying whatever they want, musically. No technique or lack of musical knowledge holds them back. I’m sure there are many more but guys like Bela Fleck, Chris Thile and Mark O’Conner are some that have moved and inspired me over the years. Now I add Guthrie to that list. Genius level technique and creativity.

cant lie the solo part.. how it shifts from the minor and major (arpeggios if you will).. its one of my all time favs.. it so insanely melodic and thats what i like about it the most

I think I could hum this song from beginning to end without the audio, so I don't think it'd be that hard for him. BTW, he changes up some parts when he plays live, so maybe he just memorizes the "idea" of the song more than note for note.
