Personally, i dissaguree with yhe sentiment. Whille i do think there is truth to it, in my own life ive more oftain perfered to play, practise, experiment and analise music analise alone. Frankly i find it much more fulfilling and enjoyable to compose or arrange a peace, and analise what ive made or what someone else has made through my limited understanding, than even to play a song. Which even i find a bit odd when i look at it from the side. But it is what i enjoy and thats what music is about for me. Its fulfilling, its enlightening, down light surprising and exciting many times, and as with everything it can also get boring, and the great thing about music or art of any kind for that matter is that in its essence it is subjective, and you can chose to do whatever the hell you want with it, and it will not harm anyone no matter what you do ( other than blasting the speakers to a painful level, which personally does not fulfill me, but even that had a place and time in which i can enjoy it without harming anyone) And music beeing as such, i very much dislike this elitist opinion that it has to be done in the way in which Guthrie has perscribed to us. If he wants to inspire new players, which it seems he does, than i think he should also make that next step and accept that different people want and are fulfilled by different things, and what fulfills him will not necesserally fulfill most people, and if it does it wont be the same way, and frankly thats the beauty in it for me. In a world in which so many things depend on rigidly following some set of actions in order to make a living, or to stay healthy, or to maintain relationships, i think that people should be not only allowed but also encouraged to have at least that one thing in which they can freely explore without feeling guilty about the expectations of someone who they look up to. That beeing said, there is also the part whare we ourselves have to take responcibuility about the fact that we are ultimately the one whom we ask when it comes to the question of " what i think is worth doing", and to that extent i feel that there is a huge need for realising what we can expect of ourselves, and to accept our limited abuilities as they are. Alright thats that, have a nice day

so true and this phenomenon is abundant in most aspects of life. my kids and all there friends will sit in their room and play group video games vs. hopping on their bike, meeting somewhere and going on mini-adventures. one of the best things about jamming with others is the telepathy you experience when improvising where everyone is able to make changes in key, time, etc... in sync without saying a word.

Making a living doing music is not a realistic goal for me at this moment in my life. I have a family, a full time job, and a mortgage, and to do any kind of touring is not conducive for long term success or financial growth, especially with venues taking 30% of merch sales. It’s basically a “pay to play” gig at this point. That being said, I’m proud to write, record, and release music on my own without the pressure of the music industry telling me “yes” or “no,” and I’m happy to play with people at occasional local gigs to keep my performance and skillset up. The moment I stop playing music is when I stop enjoying it, and at this point in my life, I’m happy to do it. I’m glad Guthrie Govan can make a living making music. He deserves it, and he earned it, and I’m inspired by his commitment to his craft. Me? I’m happy to do what I do and feel fulfilled doing it.

Guthrie is right, the problem is, he is also very articulate verbally, he can talk just as fluently as he plays, makes him a great ambassador, a great teacher. If you want to form, or join a band, you also have to be able to speak, and while you speak, protect yourself from users and opportunists, who will steal your gear, or use you for rehearsal $ time, or as a temporary fill in, while they lie to you. My auditory learning disability plus ADHD has made me so ripe for those and other abuses, and abusers, that I have learned to be satisfied by continual improvement on the instrument .......that no one will likely ever hear, I’m unsocialized, and all those who had my back, or I once jammed with, have all passed away, so I focus on my given talent for improvisation, my band is Pandora, sax, violin (JLP) various guitar players, their lines and phrases ....Santana being my biggest touchstone, my ideal sound, but also branching back into blues. I don’t record it, I don’t share it, and it is sad, but at a certain point, the music is all I need, humans are just too problematic for those like me. With no wing man, to accompany me, I’m not sitting in with anyone, anywhere though by now I could. Music is my therapist. The troubled times we live in keep me satisfied about just avoiding the risks, I used to take without worry. Experience is my teacher, the lessons were hard, I’m happier that they are over. I have no heirs, and it’s just as well.

Like from my pen. I guess Guthrie is just old fashioned with this perspective. Why aspiring musician would not use one of the most powerful tools(internet and platforms like youtube) to potentially get the audience for his/hers music in modern world? Going around dusty bars and playing for small crowds does not really have any better earning potential or what not either. Quite the contrary I believe. His perspective does not really make any sense. I personally want to "sing"(metaphor), but don't care, never have, and most likely never will care that much about people. I've been mistreated by them my whole life, don't really want anything to do with most of them. If what I sing resonates with someone so be it: it is good, nice and very much appreciated, but it is not the reason for my want and need to "sing", and I don't really believe I should stay quiet because of my perspective on humanity on general either.
@mrrattlehead
@mrrattlehead Жыл бұрын
There are different perspectives on this matter. To me for example music has always been the safe haven to go to and shut off the toxic outside world and people. To a person like me for example, the merit and influence of people in the phenomenal experience of enjoying music and presenting it is minimal to non-existent. Am I somehow less allowed, capable, able or what ever to express or enjoy music because of this difference in phenomenal experience? I think not. Claim that music is all about people is simply bs. It's universal language of vibrations and frequencies, and when performed by conscious entity, it has innate healing and destructive properties as well, so it's not all about just "being heard" to the crowd. It also does stuff to the individual, and claiming otherwise is just ignorance and belittling other peoples experiences.@@JonnyShemzBlacklighter

When I do get to hook up they’re mostly hobbyist which is ok I guess, even if they’re good it’s like I’m there for their ego and I ain’t getting paid for it. Got a couple tricks in Eugene’s bag myself and pulled them out old head cuttin style shame on me. Don’t get me wrong there’s been a few that I was happy to ride on the journey and truly jam.

The wisdom that he is talking about doesn’t just apply to music, but to aspects of human interaction on all levels.

As a 27 year old musician, THIS was the biggest issue I faced. I tried forming a band and saw how many musicians are disillusioned, lazy and just didn't want to apply the work. They think their favourite bands created masterpieces overnight. It's what I had to give up on the idea of being in a band and just learn how to Produce and Mix. Is Rock N Roll dead? Yes, and WE killed it.

Hard disagree. There's a time and a place for both. TheDooo for example fits the MO of what he's describing, yet he's amazing and has convinced orders of magnitude more people to take up guitar than Guthrie has, and in general has a far larger audience. He's fantastic on guitars and keyboard.

But there isn't really both. Thank God the Beatles and the Rolling Stones left their room's and created real art for the world to experience. He wants more Guthrie Govans who go out and perform. He doesn't want tik tok noodlers.

The only reason why I do it is because it's difficult to find other players of a similar music taste and playing an instrument or genres or types of personalities. So I try to post in hoping that I get more similarly minded people and hopefully start playing with other people
