I am 100% convinced that guthrie is the greatest guitarist of all time. It's insane the amount of music he would have had to listen to and absorb, and the amount of practice he would have to do in order to play the things he does at the proficiency he does. Hundreds of thousands of hours of listening.. absorbing and practicing.. at minimum. And then to have the physical dexterity to actually output all that knowledge is mind blowing.
@guitarmeetsscience
@guitarmeetsscience 10 ай бұрын
Agreed 100%! He's literally a master of all trades when it comes to genres. Everything from metal to fusion to country to gypsy jazz, and he plays like the absolute best of each genre. He's lived and breathed music since he was three - and what's funny is that he thought everybody else was that way too. So when he got in school he was pretty surprised to realize that most people were not musicians lol.

@@stevebanning902 sure, most, but not e.g. the players on "Friday Night in San Francisco" (Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, and Paco de Lucía). Steve Howe of Yes plays electric, acoustic fingerstyle, classical, flamenco, lute, pedal steel, ... He won Guitar Player's annual readers' poll for 'best overall guitarist' five years in a row, won a bunch of other polls in the 1970s, then was largely erased from public consciousness by punk. I think GG's better, but he's not a "master of all trades" the way Steve Howe is.

That’s a great summary and no you can’t get everything in. I’d add that a very important aspect was his solos over jamtrackcentral tracks which attracted millions of views quite early in KZbin’s history, and of course highlighted his versatility. His contributions to Guitar Techniques magazine were a always a cut above. Compared to many consummate artists he is almost too down to earth and modest. But I think you’ll find he didn’t teach at any universities, though colleges may have had university affiliations.

I remember back when videos of Guthrie playing at clinics first became popular on KZbin. At the time Guthrie asked people not to upload videos, because he feared it would keep people from coming to his clinics. That's the only time I would say Guthrie was flat-out wrong about something. Who would forego attending a Guthrie clinic just because they saw a video on YT? No one, of course-just the opposite, as it was terrific advertising. Those early "OMFG check out this guy!" videos are the reason Guthrie attained the level of success he enjoys today.
@guitarmeetsscience

Very cool! I know the aristocrats were adamant about not capturing stuff on the phone during their shows - not to be jerks, but for one thing they wanted people to experience the entire show in live form, and two they wanted to make sure that what was being put out was of the highest quality. I think Guthrie probably was somewhat of that mindset as well with his clinics. Thankfully they made their way onto KZbin and the rest was history!

Thanks so much! That is some good feedback. I tried to sprinkle around as much as I could - obviously when you include clips, some of them could be recipe for trouble with copyright and all that other stuff so I try to do the balance between using them sparingly versus overdoing them. You go to upload a half hour video and it takes like an hour and a half and then another 20 to 30 minutes for them to check if there's anything copywritten in it, and if they find a clip that has it you have to go chop it out re-upload it again watch rinse repeat until it doesn't get any claims. That's probably why you see a lot of us KZbinrs not using way too many clips. Nevertheless I appreciate your encouraging words! I will definitely try to balance them out a bit more based on that advice. I'm just starting out in this genre.

That's what's so cool about Guthrie is that he's taking that jazz phrasing and putting it into other forms of music. So even non-Jazz fans can appreciate what he's doing.

I didn't know that fact about Ner Ner's main melody haha. I can't unhear it now. For real, Erotic Cakes is a fantastic album. I usually don't vibe with guitar virtuoso music, but Guthrie is always the exception.
@guitarmeetsscience
@guitarmeetsscience 9 ай бұрын
Oh yeah! I didn't realize that either until I came across the video he did in South Korea "DVD Completo". I never knew that as Ner' NER, as a kid we said nah nah... But he totally transformed the melody and as a result the song is awesome. His slide work at the end of that one too is total rare form. He's a virtuoso but his music is more universal because he has mastered so many genres.

The thing about guitar isnt the speed picking style or sweep picking or anything like that. Its all about knowing every mode and scale that works with every cord. Once you know where everything goes THEN you can learn all the techniques to make it faster. Without it we will all be stuck at the level we are.

15:30 I would argue that his best solo is on Drive Home. It's the most perfect guitar solo I've ever heard. The solo in Regret #9 is friggin awesome though. Even more hilarious because it's full of speed runs, giant wild bends and vibrato, and blues licks...all of which he said Steven didn't want the guitar to sound like.
@guitarmeetsscience
@guitarmeetsscience 10 ай бұрын
I love that solo! On drive home he not only played the guitar he played the amp too! A lot of people aren't familiar with this - but if you search up DVD completo that he had done when he was in South Korea I believe, and you check out the full solo of 'Ner Ner' towards the middle of the video - he went completely so all out and over the top. He made the guitar literally sing with the slide, and just pulled out all of the stops.He was in such rare form on that one, and a lot of it reminds me of the drive home solo - but without the constraints of the studio... If you get a chance to check it out I'd be curious to see what your take on it is. I've copied it and cranked it in the car and every single time my jaw drops when I hear it.
