A woman and a stranger share a meal.
GUTS is used with permission from Margaux Susi. Learn more at margauxsusi.com.
Amelia is a young woman in recovery. She's done something odd: she's just asked a stranger named Gabby to have dinner with her.
Over her dinner, Amelia reveals her struggles at "the center," where she deals with issues around food and eating. Tough and quietly cynical, Gabby reveals how difficult it is to get older and lose her loved ones. As the two share their meal and some time afterward, they forge a tenuous bond.
Directed by Margaux Susi and written by Jan Rosenberg, this short drama has a seemingly simple set-up, with two characters sharing a meal in a few rooms, supported by equally pared-down visuals that feel composed and thoughtful. But the premise has an odd origin: in a moment of psychological crisis, a woman in recovery from an eating disorder has banged on a stranger's door and asked that stranger to share a meal.
By throwing two strangers in an intimate setting in a moment of quiet crisis, the storytelling plumbs emotional depths with a unique tone. Straight-talking, slightly brusque and yet ultimately kind, Gabby knows nothing about Amelia, so her questions about Amelia's time at the center allow the writing to weave in valuable backstory that lets us understand how these two arrived at their current state in the narrative. Their conversation has a tone that oscillates between halting, compassionate and matter-of-fact. Both women touch upon their troubles, the dialogue allowing for moments of wry, slightly dark humor and sober reflection, which never veers into the maudlin.
Instead, actors Angela Giarratana and Kate Burton, who play Amelia and Gabby, respectively, manage the trick of conveying deep feelings lurking just under the surface of civility and politeness, both performers turning in superb performances that feel real and lived-in. They talk about their unique experiences while discovering the common feeling of isolation that they both share. Amelia feels isolated because she struggles with food and eating; Gabby feels alone due to her age and the loss of her husband. Together, for one meal, they have broken that isolation -- and for that moment, have made a difference in one another's lives.
A selection at Sundance, GUTS is inspired by the writer’s own experiences, and the kindness of strangers -- i.e., guardian angels -- who have helped them stay on the beam. Recovery is not linear and no two people have the exact same experience, but anyone who has had time away from the cruel, frightening, and dangerous illness will tell you that their worst day in recovery is better than their best day when they were sick. The film manages the trick of being deeply compassionate and empathetic without sentimentality, portraying a very common but often misunderstood mental health issue in a way that's complex, accessible but without graphic melodrama. It seems deceptively simple in look and feel, but as the film unfurls, its restraint reflects its characters' struggles. These two women are trying to hold on and keep it together, tiptoeing through emotional minefields without triggering anything destabilizing. By the end, it evokes no less than the courage it takes to make it through a day without falling into the abyss -- and how we help one another through, with the simple yet profound act of witness.

Angela brought me here. But the storytelling kept me here. I love the stories that don’t have the classical introduction, climax, resolution- but the ones where you’re watching through the window of a perfectly normal day, it feels so much more intimate.

Both ladies SLAYED this. As someone familiar with Angela through Starkid and Smosh, I always knew she was funny and a good actor. I knew she could convey intense depth while maintaining comedy (see Lex from the Hatchetfield Universe from Starkid). But there are such subtle things she does in this role that STUN me. When she's singing "One... Two... Three strikes you're out," her expression is slowly growing dimmer, like she's nauseous. She has this ever so slight hesitation on "twice" that confirms something is terribly wrong. Then the actress and the camera and the audio all come together to just double, triple, and quadruple down. It really captures the feeling of nausea for me personally, especially when it occurs at a VERY bad time. There are so many things to love about this short film: how real it feels, how it avoids shock and melodrama, how it feels lovely but sad, like a lot of life can be. It also leaves us with a little hope: these strangers will see each other again not as strangers, but acquaintances that might one day be real friends. The description under the video ends with the perfect line to describe all of this short: "These two women are trying to hold on and keep it together, tiptoeing through emotional minefields without triggering anything destabilizing. By the end, it evokes no less than the courage it takes to make it through a day without falling into the abyss -- and how we help one another through, with the simple yet profound act of witness."

Everyone has their own struggles. Literally, eating a sandwich is a struggle for some people. This really showed it. Support goes a long way. You don't need pity.. Sometimes all you need is someone there. I really really loved the blunt, direct but real character the older woman played in this. It reminds me of both of my closest friends from when I was in high school and one I made from work. This really hit home for me and I love it. Thank you for making this. Really. ♥

I know those films don’t usually win Oscar’s, or anything, but I wish this film would. The way they portray this strained and anxious bond is just beautiful. It’s so amazing how they showed this awkward understanding between them. They have nothing in common- not their age, not their problems. But underneath all that they both recognize, see and understand, because in the end- they are both human.

I wish I could remember which director it was, but there's a story about him yelling at his cast to "stop acting! You're all acting! Stop it!" Basically, he was ordering them to just embody the character and everything else will come from it. If you're "trying to act" you're not delivering a good performance, you're just following instructions rather than feeling the character. Both Angela and Kate have got that down. So good, and so natural.

this was amazing, very subtle but also very loud in its messaging. great work to writers and actors, filmmakers and editors, just everyone involved. applause applause. god even the last thing the audience hears along with the character, “just keep doing what you’re doing” is so well done, a subtle encouragement to everyone who carries their own struggles of day to day, to just keep doing what makes you keep doing things at all. love this more than I thought I would. glad I let this play tonight.

This felt like it went by in less than a minute. So beautifully capturing a day in the life of an individual. She becomes a character that I empathize with and feel proud of in such a small amount of time. Even though I do not relate to her struggles with eating, I recognize and relate to how human she is in a day of her healing journey.

I’m so sorry! I feel you with the Inspection OCD especially, and I haven’t encountered more than one other person who’s familiar with it. It takes me such a long time to eat, my friends and family whinge about it and/or tease me. Doesn’t help that 8 to 9 times out of 10 I find something icky in a bite I’m about to take.

@ I feel you, I was diagnosed early on, around 3rd grade. I was always known to be a picky eater, but ive only gotten pickier about food. Like, I literally don’t eat meat anymore because I’m afraid of things like tapeworms (literally almost impossible to find in grocery store meat) so I’ve been vegetarian for about 2 years now. Thankfully I have an awesome therapist that’s been helping me, it helps me feel less tired all the time. And I’m especially tired of people telling me “don’t be sad about it I literally wish I was you” like no you don’t bro 😭

I really didnt expect to nearly sob over a short film today but this is one of the most human, beautiful productions I've seen in a long time. I'm instantly in love with both characters, the need of companionship from both of them and the unlikely friendship that will come from it. This is captivating and really translates loneliness in such a mundane way. incredible.

As someone who has had issues with food for as long as I can remember, seeing a short film that honestly and compassionately displays that dull, familiar ache of looking at a plate of seemingly the most palatable food ever and saying “I can’t eat this” to yourself and still pushing through to the other side was a very comforting thing.

This film is so phenomenal I’m about to watch it a third time. That’s something I only do when a film is truly outstanding. This one’s a Triple Threat; the acting, the cinematography, and the scriptwriting are brilliant. Another thing I greatly appreciate is that there’s no pretentiousness. Neither actress appears to be “performing” at any point. Instead, they have me fully believing they’re simply “being”. So much, in fact, that I didn’t recognise Angela from the Smosh channel the first go round, which really confirms her talent because she’s one of my absolute favourites in the troop! Her costar here is superb - I’ll be looking for more of her work too. Accolades all around for this one! 10:30

@@kayhaiku29 avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder. It's very common among autistic individuals. People with it tend to only have a select few "safe" foods that they like to eat, and eating anything else can be extremely difficult. I have mild ARFID and for me, if I'm craving a certain food but don't have it, I would much rather starve than eat anything else, because eating anything else feels like an impossible chore.

Film was fun but quirky all the way up to the point she was looking in the mirror and it suddenly hit me why a center for treating eating disorders would want you to sing if you went to the bathroom right after eating. The acting in this was top notch from both actors, but man that look in her eyes in the mirror.

The comment made about insurance running out is so accurate, when I was in treatment I saw people who weren't ready to leave get kicked out because their insurance ran out or the insurance company saw their weight hit a certain number and said "oh you're healthy now so you don't need any more help". So incredibly proud of Angela and this production team for this short film, thank you for showing an aspect of life in recovery without it being a trigger for people who are in recovery.

This is such a beautiful story! Beautifully shot, beautifully acted, beautiful script! A lot of people can probably relate to the feeling of needing support but not having anyone nearby to really turn to. I think people need to be close to others, to feel cared for and be able to care for others. If more of us turned to our most immediate neighbors and asked for help and were willing to offer help without judgment, the world would be better off.

this film is so touching. i dont have an ed, but i have some mental illnesses that makes doing so many mundane things so difficult, needing to circumvent my way to manage it. but the human connection here, and just the calming thought that i dont mind being alive felt so affirming. oftentimes so many things are difficult and sometimes its downright awful, but sometimes life is okay. to say "i dont mind living", even when some things are still difficult, feels a little like my own brand of peace.

What a nice film. Really appreciated that we're just shown this seemingly random moment in the developing relationship of these two characters. No introduction, barely no context of how they met; just an innocuous conversation in this new life for Angela's character outside "the center". I've always had trouble with food and I've been struggling with anxiety and body dysmorphia for the past month, and this short was a cute reminder that maybe we I take things one day at a time.
