I install 3KW of solar panels on a DIY solar rack mount. These panels are used but still have plenty of life lift in them. First I use 4x4's sunk in the ground to make the base of the rack. Next I use 2x6's as the cross section atached to the 4x4's. Once this is done I make brackets from all thread and aluminum bar. These connect unistrut channel to the 2x6's. the solar panels have a spacing of 39". To get the panels on the unistrut I use bolts washers and nuts. My system needs the panels in series. To do this I simply take the negative of the first panel and insert it into the positive of the next panel.

Love the simple array. Based off experience with mine, you really need a center support for the unistrut. Even with a nice pitch on them they’ll sag in the middle. Having 3 headers would be the best bet.
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse Жыл бұрын
My very first array has 3 headers. Its rock solid. Any place with wind i fully suggest that way. Here we don't have much snow or wind. So far in 3 months the solar has done well with this setup.

We have solar also and want to put up another set of panels. Thanks for sharing your setup. We have to set up a winter set of panels. Previous owner did not do set up the panels for best for all seasons. I like how you calculated that into the setup.

When connecting the panels, it is good to keep them covered and use dielectric gloves. 400V= is no fun and it can kill you.

Its more about the current, but eitherway it isnt the greatest. Have you ever been lit up by a spark plug coil on a car? 50k volts. Hurts like hell but won't kill you.

@@wadebrewer7212 you need over 100mA and it won't be a problem with this solar array

@@wadebrewer7212 yes i got zapped by 230V (i'm from Europe) and from 6kV (by charged line transformer and line capacitor) I luckly survive, but 2 my co workers was get kill by 230V from 100VA transformer. I´m electrician in heavy industry.

Considering that these panels are there to stay for the next 25-30 years I see no reason to use wood. I would do concrete footings and zinc coated metal for the structure. Do it right and do it once.

Do the panels have to be grounded? How would you do that with a wood mount? I've never seen you mention grounding your system. Or does it NEED grounding anywhere?
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse Жыл бұрын
In order to ground the panels I have installed an SPD or serge protection device inside the house at a breaker. This has an earthground and a 600 V clamp.
