A few years ago I lived in a house where the only place I could put all my gear was in a conservatory with three glass walls and a twin-wall polycarbonate roof. It's very hard to imagine a worse space in terms of pure acoustics, but I was surrounded by nature and, on late spring nights, I had tawny owl chicks hooting to their parents for food directly over me on the roof, and sliding down the twin-wall to the guttering when they (invariably) lost their grip on the apex. If anyone ever complains about the sound of fingernails down a blackboard I tell them about owlet talons on polycarbonate! Anyway, it was my idea of heaven, acoustics be damned.

Super cool studios. I completely agree on the it-makes-you-feel-good > acoustically-pristine argument. Always working in a sealed box is not good neither for your health nor for your creativity; do whatever you can to break away from it every now and then. Granted I'm not a pro but just a hobbyst but, apart from a good pair of headphones, another solution for situations like your shed can be movable panels. I live in a small flat and have tall, amost to the ceiling windows and a huge wall closet behing my desk with mirror doors! LOL! An acoustic nightmares, easily solved with selfmade rockwool panels which complement the fixed ones already in place when I need some 'serious' mixing time. An engineer might get a stroke from only thinking about that but, as you said, it's the quality of the music that really matters - Bach's air on the G string still is remarkable and sounds phenomenal even when played on a rubberband, and a crappy tune is still a crappy tune even after spending a month at Abbey Road Studios ;) Cheers!

Really, I should NOT be spending hours watching you Guy - the enthusiasm, fun and natural good humour are [I find] magnetic..... even tho’ It’s all away above my station - i.e. a 100٪ lapsed child pianist who ‘fell off the horse’ the night before his first music exam and NEVER recovered/got back on the saddle/piano stool ever again. A sad story but, I suspect, probably common enough for the less musically gifted. You have inspired me and I plan to dabble again [“play with it” in the literal sense of the word] once my current CoVid work allows me home in next few months. Would you suggest or recommend a particular keyboard brand/model versus 2nd-hand acoustic? - PS my kids are at least ten years older if that might clarify the 5 decades of piano truancy.🤫

Why switch back and forth between Cubase and ProTools? I'm not a PT fan boy, but if you NEED things in PT, why not just use that all the time? Or is that simply not that big a deal?

I’m completely baffled. What are the CC21, CC22 etc features marked on the keyboard? Are these standard controls in the music/film recording industry, or are they specific to software such as the Spitfire audio pack often used? I’d really like to know. Otherwise a really interesting and helpful video. PS: Ah - found what CC means - Control Change - for Midi - as in here nickfever.com/music/midi-cc-list Some numbers are manufacturer specific - difference between PRN and NPRN. Presumably the ones shown in the video are significant for the software.

Quick question, Guy. Do you also have a master/slave setup in the shed where you utilize the KK S88 MK2? I really want to move in that direction (i.e. using multiple computers with VEPro), but have read where the S88 loses some of the functionality with plugins across the network environment. Has that been your experience as well? Love your stuff, man! Thanks for inspiring us all.

I could swear I have seen you change instruments (not just keyswitched articulations) without a mouse by punching buttons like maybe your AKAI APC MINI controller. Am I wrong, and if not, how do you do that ? Is there some way to make programmable pad button messages cause Cubase to change tracks or instruments within a VSTi ? I am mystified. GREAT tutorial series BTW !! Thanks and keep them coming ! Much appreciated.

I am amazed gobsmacked even, that you have not moved over to the Native Instruments S88. Although I only own the S49 (I already own a Nektar Impact 88+ which it sits above in a rack) it does what I want and has the octave change buttons should I need anything more. It is an unbelievable tool it is a midi controller, nks controller and will control your DAWs most important functions the screens are small but totally adequate for the job and since you own the Raven touchscreen, they are made for each other. The Fatar keys are like your old M Audio Pro 88, superb I never fancied the Oxygen it felt more like a downgrade from the former Pro 88 which is still a great keyboard and holds its price well for good reasons. Yes I know the S88 is somewhat expensive but there is a thing called writing off computer equipment against tax so let THEM pay why wait?

Hi. I already commented but got no response so hoping you see this comment/question with this being a new video. OK so I have subscribed and could watch you all day long. I really want to take your music writing course but I am a complete beginner and wonder if I need to learn piano/keyboard/music theory first? Also, if I do need to learn keyboard first, can you recommend an online course? I would love to be good enough to "improvise" like you do (not wanting to be a classical amazing player :)) and lastly, I know you are producing orchestral for TV etc but is it OK to produce Orchestral for music, instead of, for example POP music as I can't sing ha. Hope that makes sense and hoping for a response as really would love to take your course!

My great attainment this month is an Oxygen Pro 61 keyboard, free and clear, some free engines and libraries and maybe a $20 subscription to Hollywood horns and voices (I will drool for a long time until hybrid chorus can join us,) a lot of information and knowledge even from the comments, it looks like Reaper over anything else for any reason, with currently 16 gigabytes of ram that should work, and a whole bunch of cameras I guess I can shoot in the style of naturist and collect my files, but you have switched to tethering with a switch to reduce the most amateurish aspect, and of course this channel.
@thysmusic4 жыл бұрын
Why is it that we prefer playing on real pianos? Our ears are more sensitive than what 2 speakers can reproduce. For mixing it doesn't matter whether it's real or sampled, because we'll mix it down to 2 c or 5 channels anyway. But our ears are incredibily sensitive to spatial information, which all but gets taken away when pianos get sampled. When writing that added depth of sound (the sound is coming from a resonating cabinet right in front of you) can make quite a difference. I think everyone should research psycho-acoustics more than they already have. Much of our spatial processing is completely subsconscious, which means we're not aware of it. But it can make big differences :)

Working on a main monitor positioned that low can result in a bad posture, which in time can result in physical problems. Not saying this will happen, you know best, but best to keep it in the back of your head that headaches/back pains/all kinds of things could be caused by your head pointing down more. The top of the (main) screen should be at eye height, is the rule I was always taught.
