I live in the interior and at school in the 60s.my teacher from Berbice had us singing these folk songs. Still listening in 2024. I Thanks to the group for singing these songs. I hardly hear it in schools today.

Listening to these at age 30 and realizing my generation might just be the last to have some appreciation for Guyanese folk culture. It was all part of our school curriculum.

As a British Guyanese from my mom's side I have so much to learn! I just love these folk songs and hearing my grandmother Doris Harper-Wills and mom Peta Wills singing these so vividly is so heart warming! I asked: How do you know these? They said we sung these at school. Good memories amongst Guyanese family and friends. British Guyanese of today need to be familiar so this tradition doesn't die out!

My mother is from village 63/64 in Berbice, and my family sang these songs at parties growing up. Mom has dementia now, yet perks up and sings along with this. So grateful to have found this and many thanks!

1. If I didn't come, I wouldn't have known; women are dying here for men. They're giving men rum, they're giving men gin; women are dying here for men. They're giving men rum, like a turtle-dove; women are dying here for men. They are giving honey, they are giving roti; women are dying here for men. They are giving money, they are giving curry; women are dying here for men. 2. Timber-man, you heard the call; where you see, a lot and more. It's the caiman that's pulling it back; it's the caiman that's pulling it back. Timber-man, what made you stall; where you see, everything & more. It's the caiman that's pulling it back; it's the caiman that's pulling it back. Timber-man, now the tide's fall; where you see, everything & more. It's the caiman that's pulling it back; it's the caiman that's pulling it back. 3. I went to the cane-field to work, I didn't hear the morning train passed. Uncle Joe give me more, let me go. Uncle Joe give me more, let me go. I went to the punt-trench to swim; and the water messed-up my skin. Uncle Joe give me more, let me go. Uncle Joe give me more, let me go. I went to the guava-tree on the dam; and I picked a ripe-guava from am. Uncle Joe give me more, let me go. Uncle Joe give me more, let me go. 4. Timber broke-up my back, Etimaya; Timber dropped on my hips, Etimaya. Timber timber, timber is a heavy load. Timber timber, timber is a heavy load. Timber fell on my feet, Etimaya; Timber twisted on my hips, Etimaya (?). Timber timber, timber is a heavy load. Timber timber, timber is a heavy load. 5. I'm not dead yet & flies are following me. I'm not dead yet & flies are following me. I'm not dead as yet, and ants are biting me. I'm not dead as yet, & ants are biting me. I'm not dead as yet but the pastor is praying for me - bamba! I'm not dead yet - bamba!. I'm not dead as yet, I'm not dead as yet; I'm not dead as yet, I'm not dead as yet ! .

I am fed up with the hypocrisy that I encounter in Guyana with those who criticise Burnham when their ideology is no different. Guyana still had opposition party under Burnham. Cuba is a ONE party state, dissidents are routinely jailed.

No sceneries of places in Guyana, or events, only pictures of former political figures. ( Not good enough.!) Enjoyed the music very much, but there is much more about, & to Guyana, than just the consistent rotation of pictures of past political figures.

@whiteliketar What is your point? In the US the president is given 4yrs to make his accomplishment. In Canada the Prime Minister is given 4yrs. In Jamaica those criminals stay as long as they want and accomplish nothing He was in power for 5yrs, so what are his accomplishments? Just the facts please. Don't tell me his only success is having an air port named after him because that does not help the country.

@whiteliketar According to your line of argument, it seems as if you believe he was ordained by God to be the President of Guyana and therefore he should have been leading it from birth. I am not trying to be frasticious at all, but he has the same right as any of the over seven hundred thousand Guyanes who if they desire to run for President know that it is not guareanteed nor is it ordained by God that they must be president because they desire the office.

@Lephayne it's pretty disingenious to ask for a list of his accomplishments when he was forced out of power and kept out of power for over 30 years.

@whiteliketar Point proven! Your emotional issues runs far deeper than one could have imagined. Your use of the dictionary is admirable if u were 5yrs old which would explain why u can't even demonstrate the most basic elements of an argument. The logic of your complex mind would certainly perplex Einstein. I will save you any further hurt and humiliation by ending this futile discussion, u are unable to answer a question any "simple minded Guyanese" can answer without dictionary or Wikipedia

ha ha -- conversing with you is almost akin to playing chess with a clay pigeon but this seems to be fun - so let's see if I clear up that dark cloud in your mind that seems to be pregnant with self imposed confusion. The man's major accomplishments can be as much a tribute as to what he did not do as to what he actually did. I have already attested to those facts t but no doubt you will be preoccupied now with the insults instead just as a puerile mind should be. lol

I feel sad that you don't understand the truth of it and even sadder that you seem to have some racist in your blood. Maybe you should read up on how the country became divided. Maybe you should read on why Cheddi fought so hard to get away from the British...back when Burnham and Cheddi were partners and how the British split them up (divide and conquer!). Cheddi wrote several excellent books, but "The West on Trial" is probably the best.

@nr83373 жыл бұрын
@@melissajacobs9886 Actually no. It had nothing to do with race, although my Grandparents were apart of the white/Portuguese minority in the country at the time! It had more to do with the land appropriations an nationalization of means of production. They owned land and a farm in Guyana that the Burnham regime had threatened to nationalize without fair compensation.. so they didn’t just leave, they were chased out!!!

There is no such thing as one people, one nation, one destiny. This is Bull Scraps. There’s a divided people, the Africans and the Indians, who stands on the opposite side of every things. On one hand, the Indians is riding a White Horse going in one direction and on the other hand the Africans is riding a Black Horse going in the opposite direction. Try to figure out what the White Horse and the Black Horse mean.

@whiteliketar It seems you have some personal mental issues u need to get resolved (most likely related to racism). You are the one who started the name calling. You are illustrating your ignorance by failing to substantiate your claim. Now stop beating around the bush and answer the question? What did he do in the five years that he was President. Name calling and derogatory will not distract me from the answer. No need to lay out a frame work to con here. keep it simple for us simple minded.
