Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones, also called The Mad Messiah,[1] is a 1980 television miniseries about the Peoples Temple led by Jim Jones, and their 1978 mass suicide at Jonestown. Based on the book by Charles A. Krause, entitled Guyana Massacre: The Eyewitness Account, the film was originally shown on television on April 15, 1980.
This dramatic feature traces the story of Jim Jones and the People's Temple from its roots in Indianapolis in 1953 to the November 16, 1978 tragic mass suicide of more than 900 people in Jonestown, Guyana.
Sparked by rumors from renegade members, Congressman Leo Ryan goes to Jonestown to investigate reports of bad conditions and members being held against their will. With him are members of the press and a few relatives of Jonestown residents. Ryan's visit only increases Jones' paranoia, and only one of his blindly devoted followers ambushes Ryan's party at the airstrip as they are preparing lo leave.
Jones, who knows his movement has reached the end, congregates his people (many of them unwilling) for mass suicide.

I was 11 during Jim Jones, so I don't remember it, but I lived in Dallas when David Koresh killed 76 people on April 19, 1993. This is just about the greatest and most chilling made-for-tv movies ever made. It needs to be restored. I remember when Jonestown happened. It was at Thanksgiving 1978. My temporary job wouldn’t let me take off the day before Thanksgiving so I could make the 3-hour trip home from DC to South Jersey. So me and a friend made the drive Thanksgiving day. We got to the Delaware bridge just at twilight. The sun was setting and there were red and grey, dark and light gray, streaks of clouds low in the sky. Then, near the bridge, a bizarre and unexpected sight. Things that reminded me of jacks, you know, from the old game, balls and jacks, huge jacks flying up in the sky, getting lower and lower, bigger and bigger These were the first military cargo planes coming in from Jonestown. They were landing at Dover AFB. We instantly knew what they were and said, “Oh no, how depressing,” for we were depressed anyway, there was a recession and jobs were hard to find and all the news was bad news in those days. Jim Jones’ body was on one of those planes. The specter of Jonestown is with us today, every day. Jonestown foreshadowed our times more than 40 years later. Who or what else today is saying, “Come to the pavilion my children.” Who or what else is telling people to go along with dark advice that is, to say the least, not in their best interest? Who is drinking the Kool Aid now? Who is going to die, bodily or in spirit, for going along with cult deeds and thoughts? I think we all know the answer. And knowing it, we’ve got to take action to stop it.

So cool this was posted. I remember seeing it on TV, back in the day, when I was a kid. This event had an impact on me, I was born in 1967, the type of boy who read Time magazine, and growing up 'cults' were everywhere, from the Manson family to Patty Hearst, charismatic leaders using mind control a constant theme. My grandmother told me about Jim Jones as a kid. When she raised us, she didn’t like us going to church except for when I go with my grandparents. She never took us to church because one of our family members used to be a part of peoples temple and that was my great great grandma. I’m so glad one of our relatives told her please don’t go to Guyana. I remember a similar situation as an adult at church. Part of my family perished over there. I will never forget the day we found out. My beloved mother's favorite brother perished, my mother was never the same. She felt guilty, because her brother asked her, if he should marry the woman who sent them to their graves. But my mother was just a kid when he asked her that. I always felt sorry for my under age cousins who had no choice. My grown cousin took his girlfriend and her four children. My cousin who was 18, got off the bus before it left, with another girl. They told them they had to go to the bathroom and kept walking. That is the only reason why they are alive today. Even though my grown cousin, (her brother) over there wrote letters to her, telling her to come, that their mother was sick. She went around asking some of our Aunts should she go. And one told her if you go you won't come back. My uncle wife kept trying to get one of my aunt's to go to that demonic church. She finally did. That devil was coming down the aisle and my uncle wife said "here comes the father, touch the hem of his garment". My Aunt said I don't want to touch that N*****. They worshiped this devil. My uncle wife thought this devil was really God. The bible says call No man Father. Jim told her three times he healed her eye sight, so now she can drive. She went out there and caused a massive pile up. You would of thought something would of registered after the first time he told her she was healed, but nope. My uncle, had his reasons for going over there. That picture of all them lying on their stomachs dead. I still till this day be looking at it to see if I can see my uncle and my two little cousins. And that recording of that woman talking to Jim that serpent, right before they died. She was saying she understood why they had to drink the Kool aid, but she did not think the children had to. I be wondering was that my uncle's wife talking. It reminds me of her. There are many like Jim Jones, many before and after him. This has made me very cautious about preachers/churches my ears/eyes stay wide open and I listen/look to hear/see if they have Jim Jones in them, that spirit, if they do my feet get to running, running fast !!!!!! In his childhood other children were forbidden from having anything whatsoever to do with him due to his parents refusal to do anything about his persistently deranged, perverted and downright dangerous behaviour. For the last 6 years now I have Never struggled with: Anger, Alcohol, Bag language, Bitterness, Codependency, Complaining, Depression, Doubts, Dressing Sensually, Drugs, Fear, Greed, Guilt, Insecurities, Jealousy, Loneliness, Masturbation/Pornography, Rejection, Self-harm, Sexual Thoughts, Shame, Suicidal Thoughts/Attempts, Stress, Temptations, Unforgiveness, Worry, Etc... I've been strongly encouraging people to Simply "Push Play" and let The ONLY Truth set them free too, but so far Not even 1 person has made time to Listen to The Bible. ~ Matt - John = 10 Hours ~ Acts - Gal = 6 Hours ~ Eph - Rev = 5 Hours ~As a teenager I ran away and was kidnapped for sex trafficking the same day, so my life before and after had always been extremely dysfunctional. I could never understood what Jesus meant, and not even one Pastor could explain to me, Why Jesus told the adulterous woman: Go and sin NO more, after she was almost murdered by all of the Religious Leaders. So I "assumed" that it must not be possible. Then the verse that snapped me out of my Victim Mentality was from ~1ST JOHN 3:9-10 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in them, they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. This is how we KNOW who the children of God are and who the children of the Devil are!! In 2 Cor 10:5 The Apostle Paul told us to simply take Every thought captive and make it Obedient to Christ, so I take 10 Seconds to ask yourself: Will this glorify the Lord or Satan? I made a list of 182 other verses from the New Testament that also Warned us that if we continue in our sin, that proves who love their sin, and so they DON'T Love God... with ALL of their heart, mind, soul and strength. That is why Jesus warned us in Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate. For Wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to Destruction (Hell), and many enter through it. 14.But small is the gate and Narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. So when the majority of people are doing Anything, you know it's a Deception from Satan. It may seem like the world is not falling apart, but it's falling perfectly into place. Satan already fooled Billions of people in 2020-2022 to believe the Lie despite the hundreds of red flag warning signs. COVID was literally Prophesied around 1,000 BC, in the Book of Psalms by King David. They were indoctrinated by their Pastor, their family, their schools, their doctors, their Government, famous entertainers, etc... BILLIONS more are going to be prematurely murdered, because Billions of people in The Church Won't Read/Listen & Obey their Bible, because they would rather believe their Pastor!! Most churches in our day and age, are mini Cults that say you don't have to Repent from sin. The next major "Prophecied" event to be enforced is The One World Ditital Currency: 666 The Mark of the Beast. After that, there will be NO chance to Repent; because their souls will be forever Damned to Hell; Revelation 13. "Those who do not remember the past are Condemned to repeat it."

November 1978 was tragic for San Francisco; Jonestown and the assassination of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk. I forgot this one tibbit I remember especially well. Micheal Prokes was one of the people that survived Jonestown. The media asked him to speak. He spoke about his ordeal, then got up from his seat and shot and killed himself.

Milkoff indeed got whacked several days after Jones which begs the question about what was really going on. Dianne Feinstein, Willie Brown and then First Lady Rosalind Carter were all very strong supporters and influencers on Jones behalf. He was once a guest of the First Lady at the White House where he had an official portrait taken with her.

Am 30 years old and it's my first time hearing about this! Thanks alot. In Uganda where am from, someone called Kibwetere who was a cult leader of some christian-like group in South Western Uganda convinced his followers to sell all their property and prepare for the end of the world and ascension to heaven at the beginning of the new millenium/21st century. He later called everyone into the church, locked themselves in and they set the building ablaze burning themselves to death. Whether he was in the building or out when it burned down is not really known. But prior to this climax of the church fire, many followers were already being killed and dumped into a ditch at one of the locations of the church's former premises. It is said that the massacre could have been influenced by the fact that the world did not end at the 1999/2000 new year transition as had been expected, but it is also said that Kibwetere may have feared that with the end of the world and ascension to heaven not materialising, he could have feared that he would have to be answerable and compensate the followers who had sold off, destroyed or given away their property and assets. This second reason could perhaps have given Kibwetere motive to kill his followers but himself flee. However, if it was the first reason, and if all these people really believed that the world was to end, then there's a chance that Kibwetere might have also died with them in the furnace while adhering to his and their beliefs of the actual impending ennd of the world. How could I totally forget that Jim Jones was connected to Father Divine? My family and I used to drive by the abandoned Divine Lorraine Hotel all the time, especially when I was going to Temple U. I know the building is still there. My Mom used to say how beautiful the hotel used to be back in the 50s and all of the great feast they would have for all the people who would come into the North Philly hotel. @ReelBlack: Do you know what's going to be done with it? I heard for years that it was going to remade but I don't if any plans were being put into motion to salvage it.
