For those of you who don’t know they are primarily speaking Guyanese that has been heavily influenced by Hindi due to their East Indian background. None the less not all Indians in Guyana speak the same way as everyone came from a different parts of India. By the way they are talking I can tell they are from Berbice (East coast). Berbician people have many loan words taken from Bhojpuri (a dialect of Hindi originating from Utar Pradesh and Bihar) due to their isolation and hesitance to mingle with other races. Indians from town (GT/Demerara/Mahaica) have a much more “Englishfy” twang due to the interactions with other races and opportunities for higher education. Back in the day it was common for country folk to drop out by 5th form (primary school) to tend to the farm or cattle. Similarly to Berbicians, Indians from rural parts of Essequibo and the Interior retain a lot of loan words from Hindi however, some words are not the same between the 2 groups. For example, Indians from town would call a Vulture a Carrion crow where as country could would say Chani Crow. This way of speaking was a bridge by the early Indian Indentured servants (a nice term for slaves) to communicate with non Hindi speakers. Unfortunately like all languages unique to a small group of people it is drying. This way of speaking will disappear when our grandparents have passed as every Guyanese person wants to be “Americanized”. It is heart warming to see this language is atleast being passed on.

"Indians from town (GT/Demerara/Mahaica) have a much more “Englishfy” twang due to the interactions with other races and opportunities for higher education" No all you have to do is cross the Berbice River, from New Amsterdam to Rossignol its a whole bunch of Indians and Blacks living side by side. In West Berbice the Indians speak different from the East Coast Courentene Indians. In west Berbice its actually not a lot loan words from Bhojpuri. Most of it is just words dealing with food, utensils, and family relations.

Guyanese speak English, this is the creol language, developed sort as a bridge between English and mostly hindi by indentured servants during colonial times. Still understood and bits and pieces spoken by everyone. This is more of a Berbice( countryside) version. A good bit of heritage in this video
@zochbuppet448
@zochbuppet448 4 жыл бұрын
NO. you are giving the public wrong information. General Guyanese creole Its NOT a bridge between English and Hindi. Guyanese Creole is 95% English and was pidgin that was developed between AFRICAN SLAVES and the White PLANTATION OWNERS. Same as all the other English Caribbean creoles It has a small amount of African terms/words, and an extremely tiny amount of Hindi / bojpuri words used mainly in reference to food and cooking. Other groups that came after the slaves added some words. Believe it or not there are also a few Portuguese words and even french. The Hindi words are words that are left over, or remembered from when Indians spoke Hindi before it was forgotten. Obviously Indo Guyanese will have more Hindi words from when they spoke Hindi. And some Indo Guyanese will not even know some of the words because it DEPENDS ON WHERE THEIR FAMILY LIVED. If you live around a mixed group or Indians that grew up in mixed villages with black people will not know some of the words. Before the English/British took over, with it was a Dutch colony and the Slaves spoke a Dutch Creole

when i first came to Guyana i was confused to have to used some words that is not English while English was my second language at the time n i was busy learning it in school, i though they were broken English, but no! most of these words is Hindi/Urdu our ansester /forth parent brought it with them n it known as slang our broken English .........so my first few days in school i was having lunch n my teacher said some one brought callalu she can smell it n the kids call my name saying its me n i said no miss i bring bajee me still learning English dint know the different cuss my agie/grandma call it bagee so you can guess the rest . I had to battle with the English that i learn in school n the ones my family speaks home me coming from a different country n different language was harder than i expected
