I know that a lot of people, including Frank Sinatra himself thought that he should have been cast as Sky Masterson, but I just hate the idea that he wouldn't be Nathan. This is one of my favorite movies and the reason is Frank Sinatra as Nathan Detroit.
@eidelbus
@eidelbus 5 жыл бұрын
I'd never heard he or anyone thought he should have been Sky. He might have been terrific, too. Brando was the choice for Sky, though, being only 31 and making women swoon. Sinatra was about 10 years past that, and besides, who then would have been Nathan? That part I don't think would have been right for Brando.

@@eidelbus Yup Sinatra definitely believed that the cool, suave Sky Masterson should have been given to him - and so did a few critics. I heard that that is one of the reasons that he recorded the song "Luck be a Lady Tonight". He wanted to prove that he could have played that part. I don't know - Marlon Brando was such a.good actor I don't think that he would have had a problem with playing Nathan. But - I doubt that the public would have accepted him in that part. Anyway, despite his feeling Sinatra was absolutely perfect for that part.

Oh, she did. Vivian Blaine was very popular in those times. She created that role. When it was first staged in London around the time Queen Elizabeth was crowned, the Queen went to meet her backstage. She was really impressed with Vivian Blaine. And when it was time to do the film, she was first offered the role of Sara, but she wanted Adelaide, so they gave it to her. Marilyn Monroe wanted the part, but the director, Mankewicz preferred Blaine. I think I know why. Considering that Adelaide and Nathan Detroit have been engaged for 14 years, they've got to be an older couple couple compared to Sky and Sarah. In the story by Damon Ranyon, Sky is 30 and Sara is 26, so Brando (31) and Simmons (26) were the perfect pair. Sinatra was 40 at that time and Blaine was 35, so they're a perfect pair, too. Variety magazine wrote that the casting was simply perfect! I like this film very much, I've watched it many, many times during the Covid lockdown. It was a perfect escape.

I actually never really thought of that. That would have been perfect proof that Nathan was telling the truth. however in the stage version Sarah Brown does reveal to Adelaide that Nathan was there at the prayer meeting. That's why Adelaide says "Well how do you like that rat?! Just when he should have been lying, he's telling the truth"

Im sorry but I hate Frank as Nathan, maybe I just love to Broadway version too much. I also hate how Nathan is the one to leave and not Adelaide. The whole point of the song is that Nathan has been stringing Adelaide on for years and thats she's fed up and finally leaves and Nathan actually loses something he cares about. Having Nathan walk away gives Nathan all the power in the scene and it also makes it seem like he does not give 2 shits about Adelaide.
