One thing I never knew about Egypt before arriving to the country was the incredible café culture that exists here. From dawn to past dusk, you will find crowds of locals sitting at outdoor cafés, sipping some tea or Turkish coffee, eating, smoking shisha, and socializing. Join me as I visit a local coffeeshop, (or awhua, as they are known in Egypt), to experience this incredible aspect of the culture and learn about it's history.
Welcome to the channel! My name's Gisselle, I'm a budget traveler and have been to 6 out of the 7 continents, visiting 20+ countries, living for some time in Sydney, Australia as well as in Saigon, Vietnam. I am currently living in Cairo, Egypt and exploring all this beautiful country has to offer while visiting nearby countries as well. I am a lover of language and a culturally curious lady just making my way through life one day at a time. I live to learn, I love to travel and explore, try new things and meet interesting people anywhere and everywhere in the world. Come along with me as I solo travel the globe and discover fascinating new places, try delicious local food, meet lovely people, and share a moment in time on this beautiful planet, our Earth.

Good basic overview and insights, thanks! Yes a review of this famous old café would be great as I usually won't see such a place on the ground because I avoid crowded touristy places where I cannot trust their pricing..

Lol yes it's definitely overpriced in El Fishawy compared to the other more local cafes, and you are right many tourists go there because of it's location and age. However, I don't mind going there to make a video about it, as I think many people are interested to see it. It's certainly not a place I frequent, but I have been there a few times in the past.

Hi! Love the video and the beginning of it with some history of the local coffee houses. ☕ One small suggestion, I live already for some years in a 'foreign' country and am originally from Holland. Untill I started learning the local language, which took some time, I understood that with it a whole new world opens up. Though I can understand learning writing and reading Arabic is no small task. Love your video's. 😋
@Gventures
@Gventures 10 ай бұрын
I agree and I have been learning, albeit slowly. I actually made a video explaining some basic Egyptian words and phrases for foreigners that may know nothing. I know the alphabet but it takes me ages to decipher a word because the letter change shape depending on if it is initial middle or final or also by itself. Another complication with learning Arabic is the many dialects and how written is different than spoken so Modern Standard Arabic aka Fus7a is written but the words can be different for things than they would be if spoken, as well as the vowels. It's complicated 😆 But I have been learning and am continuing to. Thanks for your input! 🙏

Sure! Most of them are in downtown Cairo. I will give you links to their location (or a store next to the cafes), as there are many times not really a "name" for the cafes and you will see many as you wander around. Listed in order of appearance in the video: At minute 1: goo.gl/maps/vs8L21DCBgqXCC8f8 At minute 2: goo.gl/maps/1bqajSRk5BCdgF1k9 (link is not to the actual cafe but you'll see it when you go to that location-this is also where I filmed the majority of the video when I'm vlogging and talking with Usama). At 2:38 (El Fishawy the 200 year old cafe in Khan El-Khalili Market): goo.gl/maps/zn8mHDz8SJD7C55x8 At 3:06 (link is not to the actual cafe but you'll see it when you go to the area): goo.gl/maps/QiJAx6VHTMNEdfe87 The rest I can't even remember, there are so many cafes everywhere in Egypt and you will inevitably run into dozens or hundreds depending on how much time you spend here and how much you walk around. All the best and enjoy! 🥰

I have never gotten sick in Egypt from street food, I guess I have a strong stomach, which I've built up over the years. I think ever since spending 3 months in India eating street food my stomach has been a lot stronger 😆 I know a fair amount of tourists that have gotten sick, some from nice restaurants, some from street vendors. I got sick only once in Egypt, and that was from eating Domino's. Very good video, we are coming next year from the states & coffee is lifeline 😂 when you say ask the price, is there no price posted for items or does the price get made up on the spot?
@Gventures
@Gventures Жыл бұрын
Many places there are no prices listed. Even if there are prices listed, it's in Arabic. The numbers are different here. So be aware of that as well 😆But it's always better to ask the price of something before you order it, or get it in (if a taxi). Some very sneaky scammers will say "I was talking about dollars!" at the end (usually taxis or some camel ride type situation) when they were of course talking about Egyptian pounds. Always best to clarify with those situations, or just flat out refuse if they demand any currency other than EGP. Egypt is great you're going to love it! Most people are very kind but you always have to be careful when it comes to certain things so you aren't overcharged

@@Otownd12superman Exactly, people are people no matter where you go, both good and bad. Thankfully, the good always outweigh the bad, in my experience. Definitely Ubers are the way to go in Cairo! But I would try to learn the Egyptian numbers (just 0-10) so you can recognize the plate numbers of the Uber drivers. I didn't realize the numbers were different when I first arrived to Egypt and ordered an Uber out of the airport like I normally do around the world (just have to go past the first barriers and Uber is allowed in the parking lot), and then sat waiting in the parking lot forever waiting for him to find me, as I soon realized I couldn't read the license plate numbers here 😆 Now I know.

@@Otownd12superman Yes they really are! Around the tourist sites/areas vendors and other people trying to sell you things can sometimes be unpleasant or downright aggressive, but every day normal people not working in that industry are very kind, hospitable and welcoming. Even the vendors can be nice (I've made friends with a few), but be weary of many of them and their "honesty"; they are after all trying to make money, and them saying "I give you Egyptian price" doesn't mean it actually is 😅 I usually like to joke around with them and treat buying things as a game, don't get angry, instead joke yet be firm with the price you are willing to pay. Egyptians love to laugh, have a great sense of humor and are quite the sarcastic bunch 😆 I hope the museum opens soon too! It has been so very long, everyone is awaiting opening day. Once again appreciate you watching, and if you ever have any questions about anything Egypt related, don't hesitate to ask and I'll do best to give any information I have on it 😊

Thanks! And you're going to love Egypt 😁I unfortunately can't show you around, as I have to work. But it's completely safe to explore on your own! Or if you feel uncomfortable, there are many great guides out there 😎

I would have trouble getting anywhere in Cairo, not because of the traffic, but because of the cats. I would have to stop to pet every one.

Ahaha. Me too. I carry a small bag of cat food in my backpack so I can feed a few of them while I am out. I love cats ❤

can you do a video on money - Egypt dollars / US dollars for buying small items and tipping - (stuff like if we need Egypt dollars where to pick some up, etc. - thanks
@Gventures
@Gventures Жыл бұрын
I don't know if I'll make a video about that, but I can answer you right now. First, it's US dollars (USD) and Egyptian pounds (EGP). I would recommend having EGP for almost everything in Egypt. You can pay with card at most hotels and restaurants, but not always. And local cafes, street food, and all tourist markets don't accept cards. I by rule of thumb always pay everything in cash, unless it's an extremely expensive item or meal or or something. You can exchange money at the airport and also at exchange offices in various areas around each city. Tipping depends on the services and if it is local or tourist stuff. Anything regarding tourism people expect tips, local places do not.

I'm arab Firast time in my life seeing someone shaking a coffee this way 😂😂😂 Who ever told you about this idea is making fun on you
@Gventures
@Gventures 3 ай бұрын
Lol well my bf is the one who told me, he is Egyptian and wasn't making fun of me, he does it this way too. But he also told me people stir it. It's easier for him to shake it though because his hands are bigger so he can do it with one hand. Also lots of Egyptians have commented saying it's weird to shake it, so I know it's not usual to do it this way. Anyway, it got the job done 🤣 But stirring it is easier for me so I do that now

Hello!! It is not honey, it is molasses, people here call it honey because both honey and molasses are called the same, and distinguished by color, we say Black honey for the molasses, and white honey for the usual normal honey, bees honey, both called Assal عسل you can google to check the correct pronunciation So the sheesha tobacco is almost as the gentleman explained but it is molasses not honey

Your comment is so lame. Why does anyone care about your opinion or what you prefer. Keep an open mind to a different culture and if you don't like it, keep your pointless opinion to yourself 🤣
