In one of Egypt's oldest markets, Khan El-Khalili, you'll find everything from souvenirs, spices, tea, clothing, jewlery and papyrus to pots and pans, bolts of cloth, and everything in between. But what should we be paying in these markets? Don't get ripped off as a foreigner, follow along with me as I barter in Khan El-Khalili and find out what things should really cost. #egyptianfood #egypt #cairo #cairofood #travel #travelvlog #traveling #travelling #travelegypt #solotravel #solotraveler #solotraveller #pyramids #pyramidsofgiza #pyramidsofegypt #sphinxcat #backpacking #backpackingadventures #backpackingtravel #backpackinglife #backpackingtips #backpackinggear #streetfood #street #scams #scams

Hello Giselle!! Thank you for this great video. I really enjoyed watching since the first second. One of the things that I enjoy more from your videos is your interaction with people. Hopefully for my next visit I would try this... my personality is more shy. Also, I checked the prices that they offered you, much better than they offered to me last year. have a good day!! Ishallah

Forever is a big commitment and I like to keep my options open😅 But yes I am loving it, and for the foreseeable future I plan to stay in Egypt while exploring more of the country and surrounding countries as well, no plans to leave and live elsewhere yet 😁

Nice market tour. Gissy! Khan El Khalili bazaar is very special spot, recording there at such early hour is a better choice, cuz usually I see people record there after midday or in the evening when it's already crowded and lots of hustles. I like the tattoo that you have in Arabic, so cool! As well I'm impressed with your progess in Arabic and the Egyptian dialect in particular. 👍 I think that some (not all) Egyptian vendors once they notice someone speak the language, digs in the culture and live the country's lifestyle, they tend to act differently. More localizing, it's like a better chance to avoid more scams. 😅 Really enjoyed your video and looking forward the second part.. 👀

Good job this time, I do see improvement. First off Hibiscis is called Karkadeh in Egypt and if you’re trying to order hibiscus drink it’s colloquially Ennab. Secondly, Khan el Khaleli are full of more hand crafted souvenirs which I’m trying to even sell here in the USA, so next time don’t bother I’ve these souvenirs in Illinois without international shipping. Again nice job👌
@Gventures
@Gventures 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I know it's Karkadeh, I just couldn't remember in the moment, my Egyptian bf is always having to translate things for me after the fact 🤣Yeah I know these items can be a dime a dozen many places around, but my family will appreciate that they were purchased in Egypt, and they are very cheap, international shipment wasn't too bad either, I sent clothing and spices and oils as well, things that can't be found. Thanks for watching Raed!

Hello, your videos are helping me so much! Going to Egypt in January with my boyfriend and his mom (and guide for the whole trip). I'm very intimidated and worried about being ripped off. I know I can haggle and barter, but at this market in particular, do you find they would lie about their products often? Like say they are man made and from Egypt when they are mass produced from another country? It's just there is so much of the same thing in the market, can it really all be handmade? I'm hoping our guide will help in some of these situations, but I'm not sure if he will get commission or not from some shops. On my way to watch part 2!

I used to work in khan kalili Market or as they call it souk, and every time I watch those videos I feel very mad and disappointed because tourists they do get ripped off nowadays, do not feel awkward to bargain, if something cost 150 Egyptian pound you can get it for 50 Egyptian pound if something cost 500 Egyptian pound you can get it for 150 Egyptian pound if something cost 25 Egyptian pound you can get it for 10 just keep that in mind also be careful with the tour guide because he already have arrangement with the stores that he's going to take you to so he can get commission out of you. the bottom line do not trust anyone there they all their to make money they see you as a dollar not as a person. especially at the permits were they trying to sell you a horse or a camel ride or sell scarves or souvenirs, do not fall for this they don't take good care of their animals and the animal lives in a horrible environment it's very sad so please do not do any rides and do not buy anything from the permits as the prices is very expensive and the minute they will see you shop for something you will not enjoy your visit they will be following you every step. Egypt is very nice place to visit people are so kind if they're not trying to sell you something LOL. Enjoy your visit and have fun it's wonderful life experience and I hope you enjoyed.

Oh and one more thing if you go places without the tour guid make sure that you always recording because people in the market or any store they are much nicer if they know they're being recorded and also for safety reason.

Great video! Could you reccomend a decent perfume shop in Khan el khalili? And what is like the average price of perfumes? I'm looking to buy a few bottles so just wanted to get some more info on these things.
@Gventures
@Gventures Жыл бұрын
Hey there, thanks for watching! I don't actually have a recommendation for a particular shop for perfumes, most of them are the same, I would say. And Khan El-Khalili is a giant market and feels like a maze, it's hard to find the same shop again unless you know the market really well. But as far as prices go, watch part 2 of this video, because I buy a bunch of oils (basically same thing, perfumes will be found in the same shops anyway). In that video you will see the sizes and cost of the oils I buy, so you'll have a better idea of how much you should be paying, for oils at least. I never really buy perfumes to be honest, but I have a friend I can ask, he is an Egyptian guy and has a bottle of perfume he had, I can find out the size and what he paid just so you know. I'll get back to you on that after I talk to him

Oh I have no idea, I don't normally buy souvenirs, am not a tour guide or an Egyptologist, and knowing the difference between those things is not my specialty, I just live here and make videos. Also, Khan El Khalili is massive so even if I did know of a place, I bet you would struggle to find it. I have no idea how to tell the difference between papyrus or banana paper, cashmere or cotton, real silver or not, quality oils, etc. The best you can do is try and get the best price, and maybe watch videos on KZbin or something about how to tell the difference between real papyrus paper and banana paper. But best of luck in the market!

If you download google translate etc you can point the phone at the Arabic and it translates it to English on the screen in real time
@Gventures
@Gventures 5 ай бұрын
Oh I know, I've been using that for years as I travel the world. It's just a pain in the ass to do while filming 😅 Thanks though, I do appreciate the advice! Something I was so shocked by when I first pointed my camera at Arabic to translate was, the amount of words they can convey with such few characters. What looks like a short sentence in Arabic disappears out of the sides of the screen in English, it can't handle it 🤣

Great video 😀. I have some comments: 1) Wish that you didn't cut the first part buying the bracelet !! Your videos are very entertaining and also informative !! 2) You seem not to bargain about prices, or maybe you do but was not shown in the video. 3) I know these are not authentic Pharonic relics but my question is: are these made in Egypt like by hand or they are bulk imported from abroad ? I don't think I have been to Khan El-Khalili before. 4) You seem to be well versed in herbs and spices, no way you could have read the Arabic labels yet you identified each herb/spice correctly, is that a hobby or you are just that talented 😊? 10:09 Bad jokes from a silly lad to say the least 😑...Sorry. Glad that you left that shop. 5) Hmmm...buying souvenirs for the family back home, are you traveling back to America ?
@Gventures
@Gventures 2 жыл бұрын
Commmmentssssss😄 1) I had to cut so much, there was at least another hour or so of walking around the market, talking to people, and bartering. Viewers get bored easily and so I had to cut it down a lot. 2) There's a part 2 I'm uploading soon, that at least shows the prices I paid for what I bought and also a little bartering. Actually I didn't end up bartering a lot in this video, you're right 😆 Just my luck that the day I go to film about bartering people are actually offering me decent prices 😂I've been to Khan El-Khalili many times before and know how much a few things should go for. For example the ashtray I bought, people usually tried to sell me that for 150 at the start. Because he offered me 70 I didn't feel it was right to try and barter, as he offered me fair prices to start with. Also the statues I bought, he gave me pretty decent prices to start. And part 2 when I buy oils, I would see most oil vendors selling small jars for 200, which is a rip off, but he charged me 50 each, so that was also fair price and there was no need to barter. 3) I can't honestly say whether these souvenirs are made in Egypt or not 4) Haha no I definitely wasn't reading the labels, I just like to cook sometimes and know my spices. Also yeah that young kid was stupid, I kinda had a feeling he was saying stupid shit but obviously I couldn't understand at the time, was told later what he said by Egyptian friend. 6) Buying souvenirs for family back home, yes 😁Flying back home? No 😁 Sent a package by mail

@Gventures
@Gventures 2 жыл бұрын
I meet people all the time! But I'm a very social person and have never struggled with that. Not sure if there is a "place" to meet people, maybe co-working spaces or hostels, but outside of that nothing really comes to mind. Not sure what people do with their free time! Depends on the person I suppose. I usually hang out by the Nile or go out to a restaurant with my friends. Lots of people hang out at cafes and watch football games, or just hang out and socialize and drink Turkish coffee and smoke sheesha. Walk around and shop. Stay home and relax. Just usual stuff people do, minus the bar/nightclub atmosphere that comes with a lot of other big cities around the world.

@@icapyoda5035 Do you make videos...? No I don't really have too many tips honestly, still figuring it out myself. I don't use any effects, unless we are counting occasional arrows or laughing emojis as effects. I think shorter videos is definitely more engaging for people, "audience retention" as KZbin calls it, is not very long, so if I upload a longer video the chances of someone actually watching the entire thing are quite low, I guess.
