I just wanted to say, as an Egyptian, what you wanna wear or not wear is no disrespect to the culture in anyway, anyone should be covering as much skin as they want, the only thing people should put into consideration is how much they're comfortable with attention and stares and how safe they'd feel. Also, I just found out about your channel recently and I absolutely love you and love your content!!

I lived in Egypt for 6 years and hope to come back one again and I spent my last 2 years in Cairo before I was in Hurghada. I miss it so much but had to come back for various family reasons but miss the culture so much. I brought many dogs back with me too and they are with me. Thing is I miss my friends SO much in Cairo and the chaos as I live in the country so quite an extreme!! Your channel is the best I have seen on Egypt please keep posting it makes me feel like I am in my 2nd home!!! Thank you 🙏 ❤

Shukran ketir Sarah, you have obviously spent much longer here than me, and have had way more experiences, but we clearly both have a love for this beautiful country and so it makes me very happy to hear my videos bring you a little bit closer to your 2nd home ❤(I also love that Egyptians say that to us "Egypt is your 2nd home and welcomes you") what fantastic people. Yes, I already have quite a few good friends here too and would miss them a lot if I left. I hope you can return soon and visit your friends and be in the wonderful chaos that is Cairo! Really appreciate your kind words, and definitely won't stop sharing my experiences and love for this country ❤❤

Really appreciate your guidance in your video and having lived and taught in Cairo for three years, I totally agree with your take on everything! If I had made a vlog on dress in Cairo, I would have hit the points that you did. It can be bone-chillingly cold in winter in Cairo--maybe something about being between the desert and the Nile, I don't know. I always had two pairs of boots and a wool wrap coat for winter. I'm actually Muslim, so I dressed a bit more conservatively in my normal daily around Cairo--although, I did go on a few motorcycle rides as a passenger as well and made sure my clothes were closer fitting ; ) I don't wear hijab in the States as I like to be more below the radar as a Muslimah here, but I did wear hijab for a year in Cairo. It definitely made life easier out on the streets. I dropped the actual headscarf after spending my summer back in the States without it, as I wanted to walk through my life with more integrity, but I still wore long sleeves and cardigans on the streets and had a scarf to cover my chest and shoulders which felt like a nice middle-point for me. But, as you mentioned, you can wear whatever you wish, but you may have to deal with more unwanted attention from women and men when you are out of sync with cultural norms depending on the city and region. Thanks again for giving great advice for Westerners when visiting or living in Cairo/Egypt--it's an amazing country, and the friends that I've made there are some of the best I've ever had to this day! Ma'salamah!

You will find in citys like Cairo & Alexandria, that a high proportion of muslim women do not wear the hijab unless they are praying. you will find they often wear western clothing, even tight trousers & jeans. In the more rustic areas it will be a totally issue. BTW it is very cold here in Alex right now in February, I am dressed up in warm clothes indoors at home.
@Gventures

Really? I guess perhaps it depends on the area in Cairo, most women in the areas I spend time in wear hijab (I live in Dokki and spend a lot of time in downtown). But I suppose in Zamalek or perhaps Maadi it is a different. I just know when I first arrived in Egypt I expected to see LESS women wearing the hijab than there actually were, and the number of women wearing hijab was actually much higher, so I was surprised. But yes, many women wear modern western clothing, definitely many women wearing pants. Just not many wearing skin tight clothing and even less wearing low cut tops. For sure the villages are always more traditional. You're right about the cold! It is also cold in Cairo right now, I am wearing pants, several jackets and a scarf inside my apartment. But the fact most houses and apartments don't have heating is a big reason for that. For people traveling just to visit Egypt, I am sure their hotels are much warmer. But it is cold in Egypt during winter, and many people traveling to Egypt for the first time do not expect that.

Traveling to Egypt at the end of April for the first time on a 10-day tour and you honestly just saved me some extra cash that I was planning to spend on a couple of dresses that might solicit a few more stares than I would like. @@chris_ology In what way, like just wearing less clothing? They just look more. For women, everyone stares, men stare greedily, women disapprovingly, and you'll be harassed/catcalled more by men as well. I don't know as a guy but probably you'll also get more stares and maybe some disapproving looks as well. I haven't worn very little clothing here myself but I have noticed a difference when I don't cover my shoulders, and I have seen foreign women tourists wearing tiny little sundresses and they looked like they really regretted wearing that outfit out on the streets. If you wear too little clothing you'll get looked at like you're walking around naked, which in their eyes, you kind of are 😅

I am Egyptian born, and from what I have read is by law there is a moderate dress code such as covering breast to ankles. But to be more exact you should check. However, unless extreme such as showing a lot of cleavage, there is generally no problem as I have seen in my 10+ years living in Egypt, but advisable check with authorities. And yes, a foreigner has much more leniency, but do not dress too revealing. There is a lot to know about Egypt to stay safe, but violence on the street is generally much lower than in the States. My feeling is there is more Domestic violence in the home vs in the street, probably a revere of the States. The Middle East in general is much safer than the US. When in Egypt be sure if you Rent everything is written in contract such as increase in Rent and what is to be repaired. Anything you buy with no price tag verify with a second or third party first. For Taxi only use an application Taxi, safer and low risk to be cheated. I recommend InDriver.
@Gventures
@Gventures 3 ай бұрын
Well, that's just not true, there is no such law. I've been living here for 2.5 years and have seen a fair amount of people wearing less clothing than this "breast to ankle" code you speak of. Like I already said in the video, one should be aware and respectful of the culture, so I don't recommend dressing too scantily, but there's certainly no law stating anything like that, this isn't Iran. InDriver, Careem, Uber, there are plenty of apps one can use, or you can just negotiate with the white taxis on the street. Or if you wanna spend very little money and use local transportation, the subway or microbus is fine, just takes longer. Can I ask what you are talking about when you say "anything you buy with no price tag verify with a second or third party first." What are you talking about?? MANY things do not have price tags. You just need to negotiate. I think the advice you are giving is a bit strange, at least it is to me.
@LavaDesert
@LavaDesert 3 ай бұрын
@@Gventures You can Google Egypt dress code, but as I stated it is not likely to be enforced if not extreme, especially as a foreigner. As far as price tags, I can say that a foreigner is less likely to get the same price as a local, unless if you know the prices as indicated and are a strict negotiator. Good luck and sorry about the confusion.
@Gventures
@Gventures 3 ай бұрын
@@LavaDesertThere's no confusion, I have just been living here for 2.5 years and my boyfriend is Egyptian and so are all of my friends. I think it would be pretty incredible if I did not know this basic information after having been living here day in and day out for 2.5 years. I think even a tourist coming for a 2 week vacation to Egypt knows they get charged more than the Egyptians. That can be a khaleegy too, just because they speak Arabic doesn't mean they don't get overcharged 😆I did google "Egypt dress code" but nothing came up stating it was a law. I also just asked my boyfriend for the sake of it and he said he has no idea what I'm talking about. So I think whatever you are talking about is either just wrong, or very outdated.

Yeah...this video is about how to dress not what to do during Ramadan, though. But while we are on the subject, it's actually not that easy to find alcohol during Ramadan anyway, all the liquor stores and bars are closed for the entire month in Cairo. Food is also harder to find during the morning and day, restaurants don't open up until after sundown when Muslims break their fast and have Iftar. Do you think light pants and a t-shirt will be enough for all the sites in all the major cities? (Abu simbel to alexandria, and everywhere in between). Also, what would you recommend wearing in the last week of december to climb mt Sinai to the monastery? We are spending a few days in sharm.
@Gventures
@Gventures 6 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching! Ach, so hard to say about the clothes...I would bring a light jacket if I were you, and if you get colder, you can always buy some cheap jacket or hoody here. The plane ride here will be cold so you'll probably want a jacket anyway. I dunno, I'm from MN, yet I am cold here in the winter 😆 but maybe I've acclimated. Most places don't have heating (though I am sure your hotel will). Perhaps since you're coming from a state with snow straight into Egypt it will feel warm, but it does get cool at night. Sharm I think will be pretty windy, and at night it will be cold. Same for if you are on any boats on the Nile....pretty much anywhere with wind 😅 Walking around during the day and in the sun you will be fine and maybe even get a bit warm, but nights the temperature drops and if there's wind you will be cold without a jacket. 100% you'll be freezing at the top of Mount Sinai! Actually that photo labeled "winter" in the thumbnail is me at the top of Mount Sinai. I was freezing and ended up paying for a blanket to rent while up there 🤣 I made a video while up there, I'll leave the link, I am pretty sure I talk about the cold haha. I was warm while hiking up, but as soon as you stop hiking it's cold. And I went up there in the month of April! So December is going to be much colder. @Gventures

It does make sense. Yes some people traveling to different places seem oblivious to the fact that it's not always about what THEY feel comfortable walking around in. I have told certain women they will get stared at a lot if they decide to wear a little mini dress, and their reply was "That's fine it doesn't bother me" but the thing is, it's about respecting all the men, women and kids on the street, and it's just not what people do or wear here. So to be respectful to the population as a whole, just don't. But some people just don't care I guess

@@Gventures I think its about independence (individual Western) vs interdependent (community-based Eastern) cultural perspectives. In the individual West, you can wear what makes you comfortable (usually) provided it isn't imposed on others. In Eastern cultures, (I say this as an Arab American with an insight into both cultures) there seems to be a feeling that it selfish and disrespectful to not keep the sensibilities of others in mind in terms of what you wear. I feel that the partially exists in the USA too, but not to the same extent.
@Gventures
@Gventures 11 ай бұрын
@@Tripps2564 Of course the West is known as a more independent raised and based culture and way of thinking. "You be you! - You can do it! - Do whatever you want" Move out at an early age, go live your life, etc. That information is well known. The culture in the east is vastly different than the West, and a good portion of that lies within the family and the expected role one takes. Traditional gender roles are more common or expected (from Asia to Africa, you will find this prevalent across many continents and in many countries). A part of that is due to not offending the family, the community (but also because of what people would say, the community-that plays a big part in a lot of these situations as well), amongst many other things. There is no law here stating what people have to wear, and some braver souls dress less conservatively, but there is a lot of judgment and gossip surrounding these topics, so I think it is less pervasive due to this as well.

@@Gventures Do it ever feeling smothering or overwhelming to adhere to a more conservative lifestyle?
@Gventures
@Gventures 10 ай бұрын
@@Tripps2564 Smothering or overwhelming? No, because in the end I do CHOOSE to abide by these cultural norms here in this society, nobody is forcing me to, and I could choose to ignore it. Of course, I would be stared at more if I ignored it and dressed how I do in the West, but to be honest, stares never bothered me much anywhere in the world anyway (I do have red hair, after all). So no, it doesn't feel smothering or overwhelming. I do get annoyed with the heat and wearing more clothes sometimes though, when I'm already hot, sweating and irritable it sometimes crosses my mind "So stupid that wearing less clothes draws so much attention or is seen as immoral or like you are walking around naked, when it's completely normal where I am from." But it is what it is. There's always some cultural differences one must adapt to when living abroad (I lived in Vietnam for a while-not conservative like in Egypt, but still cultural differences), and I have more or less grown accustomed to it. I do appreciate a few things when I am abroad though, like having a drink at a bar outside (not very common to have outside seating at a bar here in Cairo) or when I can wear less clothes and not offend or bother anyone. It's hot! 🤣I don't know how the women here survive with the hijab, no breeze flowing through their hair, I hate anything on my head. Even a winter hat in absolutely freezing temperatures (where I am from it is very cold), I would still almost never wear a hat! I just hate things around my head and ears, makes me feel claustrophobic or something. It would be very difficult to have been born an Egyptian and feel the way I do (as a fair amount of Egyptians do). As a foreigner I am not judged the same way as I would be if I was Egyptian.

I learnt to dress down after my last visit to Egypt. At Giza I mingled with the locals and one night I wore a Gore-Tex jacket. One of the younger guys got upset at me and walked off saying "you think you're so good sitting there in your expensive jacket. We' are all the same here, everybody..." I was gonna retort and say well if we're all the same then why you're getting upset, but his father told him in time to cool it. And he walked off looking at me in disgust. He was so young and proud. It didn't occur to me that 500 dollars is about the average annual wage in Egypt. Definitely dress down.

@Gventures 3 ай бұрын
Oh. Well, I've never owned a $500 dollar jacket, growing up my mother always bought our clothes from the thrift store, and I continue to buy cheap or used clothing, so it never occurred to me to tell people this in the video. But as a general rule of travel, I would say don't wear expensive things, it makes you a target for theft. I solo travel the world so err on the side of caution, but I also don't like spending a lot of money on clothes anyway. But yeah...not recommended to wear expensive clothes or jewelry when traveling, in my opinion.

I'm going hagurda in Egypt in march, I don't really do well in the heat and was wondering if I could wear dresses, summer dresses bit now I'm wondering about the length of the dresses or the shoulders/ arms ?
@Gventures
@Gventures Жыл бұрын
Oh you'll be fine wearing whatever in Hurghada. Like I said, along the Red Sea and in popular beach towns and cities (like Hurghada) you will find plenty of tourists wearing short shorts, summer dresses, etc. If you wanted to have a loose, light wrap or something to throw over yourself as you wander around you could just to cover up a bit more, but I am quite sure there will be a fair number of scantily clad tourists there. I exposed my shoulders all the time in Dahab (another Red Sea town further north on the Sinai Peninsula), and although most of the time I wore the blue wrap shown in this video, I could have worn short dresses with no problem (and saw many people that were). Don't worry about Hurghada, you'll be fine there in almost all attire since it is a popular tourist vacation spot along the Red Sea. Enjoy! 😁

You don't want shorts outside of downtown Cairo or a resort. Either the sun is really strong and the wind and sand is abrasive, or there's dirt, dust, flies and tiny bugs all over you. I only wore shorts when I stepped out to get ice cream. ☺
@Gventures
@Gventures Жыл бұрын
Hmm, I saw plenty of people wearing shorts in Dahab and that was neither Cairo nor a resort. I've never been to a resort. Regardless, my recommendation in the video pretty much suggests to not wear shorts unless they are on the beach. I didn't have an issue while I was in Dahab wearing short dresses (pretty much same thing as shorts with the legs exposed), but if someone finds they have a problem with dirt or insects I suppose they can go change.

@@brendantravels Yeah lots of places are, that's what I was talking about in my video. Many places along the beaches are fine for wearing shorts. I mentioned Dahab because you mentioned not wearing shorts outside of downtown Cairo or a resort and I was just saying Dahab is neither (by the way, as a woman I would never wear shorts in downtown Cairo even). And people wear shorts in Dahab, Hurghada, etc. So in many cities along the Red Sea, which are popular of course for tourists.

Hi Marilyn! I'm sorry, but I don't think I can really answer that for you. I don't know you, your health, capabilities, budget, where you've traveled before (developing countries or not), etc. Even if I did, I would hesitate to give someone I don't know advice. I can tell you that I have no problem traveling alone here. I have met a few ladies that are older and traveling on their own, perhaps the oldest woman I met here was around 60 or 65. It it totally possible, but many factors come into play, and not everyone wants to travel solo in Egypt. I personally love it, but it can be a chaotic place, and overwhelming for some people. The only way I know how to travel is completely solo, so I don't have an recommendations for guides or tours, unfortunately.

Can you do a video on what “American “ items are sold there? Are there familiar brands? What about children/babies items?

Actually, I don't like shopping much and don't really care about brands...maybe just some food items I care about brands, but most American brands of food are not easy (or impossible) to find here. Hi there! Actually, it totally depends on where you are coming from/what climate you are used to. If you are coming from south India or Thailand, for example, then the weather might feel cold to you. If you are coming from Sweden or Canada, the weather will feel hot. I recommend looking up average temperatures on google for each city you mentioned, because google is pretty accurate with the temperatures (and each city is different - Cairo is in the north and cooler - Aswan is much further south and warmer). I can tell you right now here in Cairo, it is 13c and 8am. But it will warm up as the day goes on and will probably reach around 22-24c during the hottest part of the day, then drop again as night comes.

Depends on where you're coming from, I think it's cold here now but maybe I've acclimated after being here for almost a year and a half. It's close to 10pm right now and the temperature is 15 C. In the middle of the night it can be colder. Most places don't have heating so inside feels the same as outside. I'm wearing winter jackets in my apartment all the time 😅March will be a bit warmer, but it also depends on where you are. The Red Sea, in the south, or in the north like Cairo/Alexandria? Expect cool temperatures in the morning and at night. Day time warms up a bit in the sun, but if you are coming from a place with very cold winters and snow, maybe this will feel nice to you

Mexico there is a lot of harassment, India, Indonesia, South Africa, etc etc. I don't feel like I am harassed in the streets all the time, although there are a lot of people trying to sell you stuff. How you should dress does depend on where you are, as I said "beach towns are different", and of course certain neighborhoods are more affluent and more liberal or accepting of how one dresses. The more local the neighborhood or in villages the dress code is different, as I also mentioned in the video.
