Technically, only Squaresoft developed Xenogears. Of course, I never really understood why Squaresoft thought 900k was bad. What an undeserved slap in the face from Square.
@XanderVJ

@@benjaminsears9106 That's a black legend of sorts. Takahashi has said multiple times that the short comings from both "Xenogears" and "Xenosaga" came from his lacking management skills at the time and the inexperience of most of his team members, not because Square nor Namco didn't support him. Heck, a sequel to "Xenogears" was greenlit, it's just it was during the time when Square was starting to deviate resources, not only from Takahashi's team, but from the entire company, towards movie production, something that affected all Square games not titled "Final Fantasy". Ditto Namco, who supported the entire "Xenosaga" franchise way more than most fans give them credit for (they created 3 spin-off games, produced an anime series and multiple merchandising, for crying out loud). But of course, the narrative of greedy corporations squashing the creativity of a bohemian artist is too strong to resist to many, I guess.

When you factor in Monolith's support teams, the studio's game design philosophy single-handedly leading to a game like Breath of the Wild even being possible for Nintendo, and how close Takahashi and co. came to working on so many historic games (between Xenogears near-missing as a story for FFVII, the doomed Chrono sequel, Mother 3), there's an argument to be made that they're one of the most important studios of the 21st century so far. It's insane.

The sheer ambition and stubornness Takahashi has for telling the complete Perfect Works story cannot be overstated. The man might finally get that goal with the xenoblade series.
@blumiu2426
@blumiu2426 2 жыл бұрын
The Perfect Works story can't be told given it's broken up with different publishers and his wife was half the force behind it. Xenoblade is very much something new he started as Takahashi does get bored easily with things. There already were retcons in Perfect Works not seen in Xenogears and concessions were made with Xenosaga. There would be no way that Xenoblade could perfectly tie-in given the time between, how the Xohar and other aspects are veery different. The episodes he originally planned on got as far as Xenosaga it would seem before he took a new approach and did a time leap to soft-reboot/start a new story in the same universe, if that. Kind of a brand name than continuation of Perfect Works that had plans for a very different story we've seen with Xenoblade.

@blumiu2426
@blumiu2426 Жыл бұрын
@@currywurst2434 No idea has been reworked that he planned for the original Xeno series. It couldn't because some things I don't think he can use because it is under BandaiNamco, this after he had already started somewhat again after leaving Square. He also has a penchant for moving on to new things and of course that would happen after 20 years. It's very light-hearted now and simple, even a tonal shift from Xenoblade Chronicles to the moe-level of anime Xenoblade 2 was (plus he put a harem in the game, a harem that fulfilled with the MC impregnating three women like traditional Mormon lol) It's just not the same series or story, especially given his wife was also part of it all originally and now it's just him. The series just hasn't caught on like many thought would happen with XC3 outside it's fanbase. Personally, Japan has a problem now that when it makes any that look anime, it uses anime tropes and conventions instead of just telling a story with those visuals. It already reinvented the series last game, so I'm not sure what more it can do when it made it so female characters cranked out like gachas.
@Wiseman108
@Wiseman108 Жыл бұрын
@@blumiu2426 Honestly the best we can hope for is a proper remake of Xenogears that includes all of the cut content. Of course that would require Square, Monolith, and Nintendo to come to some sort of agreement which seems unlikely. Even if that never happens I would like to see all of the old Xeno games re-released on modern consoles even if it is just PS Classics ports.
@blumiu2426
@blumiu2426 Жыл бұрын
@@Wiseman108 Most definitely will never happen. Too much red tape for something they wouldn't be confident in the sales of unless it was altered to cater to the casual market, meaning ARPG leaning heavily into action like FFXVI. And given how censorship ready SE is now, Xenogears would have so many scenes and dialogue changed that the game wouldn't be the same because it was a mature story. It's so far removed from what Monolith does now it's hard to consider they stemmed from one another other than Xohar appearing in every entry in some way.

As someone who has never played the series, aside from the Xenogears demo on a Playstation demo disc (and failing to find a copy of the full game every time I visited a game store), I had heard about most of these games in that I knew they existed, but I had assumed that they were all one long running series starting with Xenogears. But, it's 3 different series across 3 different publishers by the same people? I've heard of spiritual successors, usually in the indie space but it is not unheard of in the AAA space with System Shock and Bioshock, even sharing part of the name. But Xeno technically being 3 series while also being spiritual successors building off of ideas from games in previous series'? Amazing

Now later in life I’m finding Artifacts that no one wants to really talk about, and then right when I start doing all this that anime Spriggan comes out… It’s like I can’t get away from this… What do you guys know about ancient American history? ;all these little stories about Ooparts and Ancient technology… I have to tell you there’s something to it. I’m so glad I decided to complete Xenogears and the Xenosaga games before Xenoblade 3. I understand so many references now even within 1 and 2. I’m also already seeing a LOT of Xenogears references in 3. If 1 and 2 are spiritual retellings of episode 5 of perfect works, then maybe 3 is episode 6?

What a great video, As a hugeeeee Xeno series fan I know exactly how hard this video must of been to make. Xenogears alone made me a scholar in psychology and Gnosticism. I'm joking of course but this series is so dense in lore and inspirations to research it so intensely is hard work. Thanks Derrick for all you did for this video. Enjoy XBC3 :)

This video is great and reminded me just how much I love all Xeno games. My most favorite JRPG to this day is the Xenosaga trilogy. I truly believe that among these three games, they all make up one perfect game. I really wish for them to remaster Xenogears, Xenosaga, and Batem Kaitos also, as I believe that these games would surely fare much better sales wise nowadays.

I love these long form deep dives. I found this channel through the Shin Megami Tensei Deep Dive, and despite not being anywhere near as interested in the Xeno Franchise (I've played Xenogears and XenoSaga Episode 1, that's it) I'm totally here for this! Edit - To answer your question from the end of the video - YES PLEASE! I will watch any and all retrospectives of this kind you care to produce. Aside from the obvious choices like FF and DQ, here are a few suggestions from me - the Tales series, the YS series, or the Fire Emblem series. the Trails games, Suikoden, the Shining franchise, or the SaGA games could all be really interesting as well. Thanks for the content! I'm sure these take A LOT of time and dedication to produce.

As someone whose first real exposure to Monolith was through Xenoblade 3, this really helps put into perspective just how far they've come since the Squaresoft days. Bonus points for keeping things spoiler-free, as I now want to play all these games to figure out the stories behind them for myself. Great work!

Despite being stranded on a dead console and faced with its servers being shut down soon, I still love Xenoblade Chronicles X so much after having done a 100% run last year over the course of 650+ Hours. It truly gave me a new appreciation for not just the franchise(s) (Xeno-Gears/ Saga/ Chronicles) but for game design as a whole! They practiced some sort of Coding/Game Design Black Magic to make it run so excellently on the Wii U while giving it so much to see, do, and experience! It’s highly unlikely it’ll ever come to the Switch, so I can rest assured I saw everything in my experience with it over 4 months/8-16 hours a day. MonolithSoft proved with that game (as well as the other Xeno games & BotW) that they’re not just Deity-Tier on every front BUT ALSO A FRONTRUNNER FOR BEING AMONG THE MOST IMPORTANT STUDIOS WITHIN THE GAMING INDUSTRY! Bless you, Takahashi & Friends! Can’t wait for what’s after XC3!

Honestly, Nintendo acquiring Monolith was the best thing which could have happened to them. It's also the reason why I wouldn't object to Nintendo purchasing Platinum games. For all Nintendo's faults as a company, at its core the majority of people running it are gamers and as a result, they'll let a title breathe or even save titles such as Bayonetta. That said, it would be nice if Nintendo remembered the likes of F-Zero, Golden Sun, Chibi-Robo and Eternal Darkness to name but a few...

It gives me a newfound appreciation to the dedication of Monolith's team. I'm just getting around to sinking my teeth to the Xenoblade series and as an older fan I feel like a kid at the candy store. Thank you for giving the series the in-depth documentary it deserves. The attention to detail and thorough research truly paid off and I was hooked to every moment. I learned of some spin-offs I did not know of prior and it has me wanting to dive deeper into these games. I can't say it enough how much I loved this! Thank you for your hard work.

Dang, I didn’t know until now that the Xeno games had such a tumultuous and complicated development history spanning three different publishers. It seemed like Takahashi had tons of ambition for these games, but didn’t have the time and/or budget to fully realize their scope, much like Kojima with the MGS games. But with Xenoblade, it seems like they ran into the least amount of problems when creating them due to both Nintendo’s support and input, as well as Takahashi learning from his mistakes. And with the long-awaited third entry arriving tomorrow, I have full faith that it’ll deliver an epic and satisfying conclusion to the series.👌🏽

@@cemarz Maybe about in terms of cutscene length or the original vision for the games with how much had to be cut, but in terms of the actual scope when the Xenoblade games usually clock in at 100+ hours? And have these large, immersive worlds instead of being linear? I find that kinda hard to believe.

I can't understate, at least for myself, just how awesome this look back at the xeno series is. I have never totally finished Xenoblade 1 and 2 despite going through 3/4 of the story on those games. But Xenoblade 3 has me facing THE END of the main story now and I can't wait for the end game experience! :) Everything is fun. And the story has me hooked. I’ve been a huge fan of the series since xenogears and I still own and play xenogears and xenosaga 1-3. But the best thing I loved from your video was a argument I used to have with my best friend from high school. He used to always say that xenosaga had nothing to do with xenogears without ever playing xenogears. I had played both and tried so hard to get him to try and play xenogears but he never played it. So when you straight out confirmed it was connected a part of me was remembering my argument with him and saying in my head, “booyah!” Thanks for this video. I loved it .

I'm currently still in an ongoing 3+ year process of getting my friends to start any Xenoblade game (One played XC2 until chapter 4 but got stuck in the old factory. Can't blame him lol. Another bought XC1 but dropped it for some reason. The last one bought XC3 after trying it out on my switch but hasn't played yet).
