I actually think Gwen NEEDED to experiment on her own back then. She spent so many years in a rock band and she wanted to try new things out. And thank God she did. They are fun, innovative and inspiring. That industrial/bubble gum sound/aesthetic is still being explored in current pop. However, I get what you mean. She's 51 and she can look at her catalogue from a wider perspective. Songs like this fit her so well both vocally and stylistically at the moment.

She has said that songs like this one were inspired by her troubled relationship with him. “Cool” is an example, though that one is about them being friends. No Doubt and Gwen Stefani solo are absolutely some of my favorites in the music industry. “Ex-Girlfriend” is another example. Again, she said it was inspired by her troubled relationship with Tony.
