Never thought I'd get sentimental about one of these. I really loved them latterly, because you opened the doors the old fashioned way, by hand from the outside, and they had a proper luggage compartment at each end that could hold a few bikes and even a tandem. They had a good solid feel to them too, none of this lower coefficient of friction stuff that makes them slip on leaves ( that's why the lighter ones slip). Scotrail got some of them on withdrawal, and use them in sets of 5 I think, so you can still travel on them.
@StaxRail3 жыл бұрын
They truly were built to last, and did the job brilliantly. ScotRail do have some of these now, running as 2+4 and 2+5's, whilst GWR have some 2+4's with the same modifications. Thanks for watching!

Not technically the last HSTs on the GWML, as Cross Country still run a few, but these were definitely the last HSTs out of Paddington in public passenger service... Shame to see them go Edit: And you also have the Castle Sets working in the west country still along the GWML
@StaxRail3 жыл бұрын
The GWML is the name given only to the London-Bristol section, the Castles dont operate there nor do the XC sets to my knowledge

@StaxRail3 жыл бұрын
For the most part I agree with you, I don't get why some feel that tones are the "be all and end all". However, in this instance no one at the station was 'asking' for this, it was just the driver's way of giving the HSTs a good send off

@StaxRail3 жыл бұрын
No, whilst the nickname "Flying Banana" is usually given to the NMT now, it was originally a nickname for the entire class of HSTs because of the original livery. This GWR tour was given the name of "The Flying Banana" because of this, and is nothing to do with LNER's "Let's Go Round Again" charters- this took place 7 months prior.
