I thought it looked much slower. But then I did a quick calculation. The back of the train passes any of the station canopy supports 4 seconds after the front. The train has 8 23-metre carriages plus 2 18-metre power cars. Total length 220 m. That makes 198 km/h. So 125 mph is quite likely.

Don't be fooled. By 2000 the 125 bit was obsolete.During the 80s and 90s journey times between Paddington and Swindon were progressively eased out by 6 to 8 minutes providing a schedule that could easily be met without exceeding 100 mph - saving fuel and maintenance costs. With this slack in the schedule a train that was six minutes late at Swindon should have been able to make up time but they never did and were always just as late at Paddington. Even in their heyday I doubt if they ever went through Slough at 125.
@ЦветозарЦветков-е5о4 жыл бұрын

surely you'd be going faster to get out of slough. couldn't ever go fast enough to get through slough quick enough

They padded the timetable especially between London and Swindon because the Reading commuters were using them in preference to the other services.
@PenzancePete4 жыл бұрын
OK, a reply from one who was there. In 1977 - the year after the HSTs were introduced on the Paddington to Swansea/Bristol TM routes - I was a Conductor Guard at Paddington. The scheduled time from Paddington to Reading was twenty two minutes as against a loco hauled timing of 28 minutes. Remember this was when there were seven intermediate coaches but Westbourne Park station with it's curves was still in place as well as the original Old Ok Common based 1960s signalling speeds of 130 mph were common through Sonning on the down. Slough was most certainly passed at 125 mph, with a clear road the train would be doing 95 through Ealing Broadway. The management was aware of this but the drivers in those days were time-served men and could be trusted to use their judgement unlike the boil-in-the-bag boy wonder management led drivers of to-day who have the drivers braking at the first sight of a double yellow. This is why the timetable is so padded. Paddington to Reading just pre-electric wonder trains was timed at 25 minutes for an HST. The fastest journey by electric wonder train is now 23 minutes. The line has been straightened at the London end, re-signalled and electrified yet it's still slower than it was over forty years ago. Bristol T.M. is no quicker either. a 1977 non-stop HST would do Paddington to Swindon in 48 minutes. A one stop wonder train takes 51 minutes. So no real gain there. There has been no real progress. The HSTs were demonstratably faster, certainly more comfortable and had far better refreshment facilities.

Very unlikly that the train was doing 125mph. Not very often that they would charge through a staion at that speed. The line speed for the main is 125mph and 75mph for the releif. But the wind pressure would be great and though they tell you to stand well back behind the yellow line they cannot be sure so drivers use caution when going through stations.
