It was agreed upon at the beginning of World War One that no hospital ship would be sunk intentionally. In World War Two, the agreement was still in effect, though it wasn't officially stated before the conflict. I'm not arguing the fact that they were sunk, but it was against the Geneva Convention

The Hague Convention of 1907 stated (among other things) the protection of marked hospital ships and requires them to treat the wounded and shipwrecked sailors of all belligerent parties. It was ratified by all the major parties.
