First, let me say thank you for posting these videos. Your videos have presented the clearest picture of what any future owner might experience. Toyotas have had hood flutter for years . I’ve heard folks complain about it on the new Grand Highlanders (ie, TX) too. I’ve gotten used to it on my 4R, but it’s pretty chintzy, especially on a $75-80k vehicle. The more I see videos on these new GX the more I see it as a souped-up 4Runner for twice the price. From purely a utility standpoint, it’s a truck that’s basically the same size, gets basically the same fuel economy, etc. Besides ever-larger dash console screens (which I could care less about) I’m not sure what makes this so compelling. That said, good luck with yours and hopefully you will continue to post updates.

For what it’s worth Toyota/Lexus are well known for being very very conservative on the fuel level reading vs the actual fuel level in the tank. Chances are your GX550 is showing empty while still holding 3-4 gallons of fuel. The manufacturer likes to keep the fuel system as reliable as possible so Toyota/Lexus want to keep the fuel pump submerged in fuel because the pump is cooled by the fuel around it. So they show empty with a healthy reserve for fuel pump longevity. You can still use every last drop though. So you really have more range than you think, but using every last bit is probably not advisable on any car or truck. At least not if you care about your fuel pump.
@JohnJohnCrusher7 ай бұрын
But you can't be sure. So you can't really use that supposed hidden capacity.

@@NorthoftheWallGarage I agree with you that if a larger tank becomes available that it’s worth considering. I’m not sure why the fuel tank is so small, my guess is to preserve payload, but that’s just a guess. If towing 9,000lbs is a thing with the GX550 that means approximately 900lbs of tongue weight on the hitch eating up payload. Throw in two adults, and some kiddos on top of that and you’re hard up against your rated payload. Gotta save that payload weight somewhere and gasoline weighs 6lbs/gallon.

Hey Mark - fantastic videos! I drive a Tesla Model Y and am currently looking for a sportier SUV to use as more of a family hauler for around-town driving. I've been considering both the Lexus GX and the Land Rover Defender, but I'm leaning towards the GX. I'm not really an off-road person, though I do drive on the beach from time to time. I’m looking at the Premium Plus trim since I prefer the smaller rims for a smoother ride, rather than the larger ones that come with the Lux package. I do have one little one in a rear-facing car seat and another in a forward-facing seat. Would you recommend the captain’s chair option in that situation or bench? Also, how big of a hassle is the leg positioning piece with the rear tire? I’ll be going back to the dealership to test it out myself, but I appreciate you bringing it up. I’ve also heard a lot about the hood flutter issue, and since I’m someone who gets easily distracted, I’m curious if it’s been annoying over the past few months or if it’s something you’ve gotten used to. Thanks again for all the help - out of all the videos I’ve watched, yours has been the most informative and helpful in guiding me towards making a decision.

Apologies for the late reply and thanks for the feedback! I would definitely go captains chairs and would have picked that configuration if it was available for overtrail. It's nice to have that space to access the third row. After nearly 8 months of owning this car, the leg positioning issue is not a problem anymore. I got completely used to it and just keep my back against the inside of the rear door when loading my son in the car. Hood flutter definitely exists, but is easy to ignore after a while. Some have had this rectified at dealers.. I'm going to see if they're able to do anything to mine to help. If they couldn't do anything, it really isn't a big deal to me, but definitely something to note.

If no tire shine, will be mud for people, so good call out that the wheel well is part of the door. Interesting find and heads up. I have a Ram 1500 and already end up with mud on my legs from the step boards, so this is another mud trap! A/C wise, I never run on AUTO, so good to know but an FYI. I always run on LO and high fan in the summer, love my AC. I hate gas caps, love my Ram for the lack of a gas cap. Don't have to touch the cap or worry about it swinging down and hitting my paint. My RAM has the larger 33 gal tank, I can go 450 to 500 depending if I'm cruising at 65 or at 75 or even 80 MPH as I live in Montana as many highways are 80. Good info, thanks for sharing. I have the GX550 on my list of SUV's I'm considering in 2025. I will add, my "perfect" or nearly perfect car was my 2013 LS460 F Sport. EXECPT the freaking Brembo brakes that squeaked literally from break in, about 500 miles. They did swap out the pads twice and it did help but when I think back over 35 years of cars (I've owned near 60 cars in that timeframe) that LS460 is the one I miss the most. Amazing ride, sound system and overall just loved it.

I'm waiting for my GX to come in. I've been a little uneasy about it, but after watching your video, I'm feeling better about it. I live in the south, and we always put the AC way down when we get in the vehicle, so that doesn't bother me. My husband has a 2017 Tacoma, I never noticed his hood. I might now. Those aren't deal breakers for me. My job is the next exit away, so gas doesn't really bother me. Hoping the the engine issues are figured out and taken care of that of course is my main issue. Also, hoping there is something after market for the hood fluttering.

Hey love the vid. I would say a good rule of thumb is always buying the second/third year of a new generation product. 1st year is fixing any tweaks, 2nd / 3rd yr usually is the best, 3rd and beyond usually is to maximize shareholder profit which could cause a drop in quality.

@notWG good flutter world be a warrantee issue simple fix to adjust the good. The 3 zone climate control is avalible in all LC250 trims along with a much better fuel mileage range. It appears that you have never owned another GX as 3 zone climate control has always been an option in many trims. Lastly, your purchased an overtrail for a family vehicle? I think the TX would have much more suited your needs and expectations considering this is the first time an offroad trim of the GX has been made avalible.

@NorthoftheWallGarage7 ай бұрын
Yes correct - maybe I was a bit cruel on range but currently I’m only city driving, and I think the OT is worse on fuel mileage than the standard premium due to tire size (I don’t think they separately rate trim levels with the same engine). with the A/C they have a Eco setting, it reduces the air flow to conserve energy, it's crappy, you can turn it off by pressing the Eco heat/cool button. also there is a s-mode that when on sends more air flow to the driver and not to the passengers. make sure that you turn off this if when you have passengers. you select these options from the front air-conditioning control system

I own a regular gas Toyota Grand Highlander, introduced for the 2024 model year and I think some of the issues you mention appear to be common across newer Toyotas. Firstly, the air flow not blowing hard or strong enough on a hot day unless you really lower the set temperature or alternately crank up the fan speed manually. The second is the hood flutter at highway speed. And the third issue that I have in common is the relatively low fuel range. I have the regular gas engine, not the hybrid which has lower fuel consumption. So while the fuel tank capacity is kind of right sized for the lower hybrid fuel consumption, it is certainly lower than optimal for the higher fuel consumption of the regular gas engine. Having said that, Toyota has sweated other aspects of the vehicles such that it is superior to other vehicles I have owned e.g. the perfect balance of switches and touch screen controls in my opinion vs the trend to go all touch screen nowadays. Secondly, even in the base trim Grand Highlander, the second row has it's own climate control i.e. it's a three zone control climate with vents in the ceiling stretching back all the way to the third row. And little things like a manual privacy/sun shade on the second row windows, something not found on more expensive vehicles.
