So, a better ride and drive experience, doesn’t have a wireless charger, but has better wheel/tire options, faster, better ownership experience, available 7 seat configuration, better tow rating, and the mpg penalty equates to only $800 a year. I think there’s no question that the GX is a better experience.

I'd highlight one thing in favor of the LC which is it seems more modular in terms of aftermarket upgrades. No cutting required. I hate the idea of cutting a bumper that costs thousands, but some people don't mind at all. Also, we're comparing similar trim which absolutely I agree go GX. Also, all LC250 trims come pretty much ready to off road while the GX premium and luxury (which are the cheaper options) are pavement princesses stock. I think I'd take the GX OT for $69K or the Land Cruiser trim for $62K. Finally, I personally much prefer the interior design of the Land Cruiser.

I think the only way to get a Land Cruiser is go with the “cheap” 1958 trim (can’t believe 55-60k is the lowest trim level lol). But even then if I’m spending 55-60k on a vehicle, I’m honestly going to get something else. At that point though I would honestly get a Honda Passport for 40k and spend the remaining 20k on an old Jeep or something to off-road if that’s why I was buying the Land Cruiser!

@@TheCree2010 I understand your point of view, especially w/ the "two car solution". I will say though, times have changed and inflation is a real thing. These Land Cruisers are no more expensive than previous Land Cruisers adjusted to 2024 dollars, and they come with WAY more power and tech. But yes, it's hard to stomach 55k for cloth seats and very little creature comforts. The 1958 would price be equivalent to 39k in 2010. It's just such a massive difference, but that's around when my personal "normal car price" calculator is baselined. Unfortunately, I have to remind myself that my pricing bias is not in line with the reality of current USD values.

We bought a GX 550 Premium Plus, and I think for the price between that and a Land Cruiser it is a better deal. Now, we are using ours more for a family SUV that drives well and in 5 years I can turn it into an overlanding rig. I think if you were looking at buying one for overlanding / offroading immediately, the Land Cruiser makes more sense, especially over the Overland trim. Both very expensive though. I do wish that the Land Cruiser were priced more in the territory of the Bronco, Wrangler, and Cherokees and let the GX play in the Defender price range.. just my opinion. Cars are pricey.

Car and Driver tested both, and got 0-60 in 7.7 for the Land Cruiser First Edition and 6.3 for the Lexus, so a large gap in performance. I would choose the Lexus for the styling. The Cruiser looks good, but the Lexus looks great. And you get a clear step up in performance, but I expect a hybrid version to come in 2025, so that is probably the best move, wait a year or two.

I have the GX 550, and so far I love it! My only complaint is the small fuel tank, significantly less range than my old 2019 4Runner TRD Off Road, and apparently smaller than the previous previous GX 460. I really feel frustrated about that 1 thing, because I bought it specifically for family road trips, like going to our cabin etc, which is VERY far north of Vancouver, and some exploring😊. Under 400 miles of range on a full tank, in a vehicle like this? Not very good. Aside from that, I can actually daily drive the GX very comfortably! I use to use 4Runner exclusively for trail adventures, camping, road trips (recreation) and winter driving, and daily a Land Rover, but this GX fits perfectly in the middle of the 2 lol.

I hope auxiliary tanks for the GX 550 hit the market fast! I had a long range auxiliary tank installed in my 2019 4Runner TRD OR, so definitely would like to do that with the GX 550, eventually. I use these rigs for adventures and live in rugged mountain area where unexpected landslide road block detour can add several hours of travel. Range is critical. The GX 550 Overtrail is the overlander trim, so a bit disappointed.

I love the Land Cruiser and my wife loves the Gx but we ended up with the 24 Sequoia Platinum I drove both of them and is funny but I found the LC a little bit more responsive than the GX. Yes the GX had more push but I felt like you had to wait a little before it moved where the LC just moved More impressed with the LC drivetrain in everyday driving. Both of them noisy on the highway once you reach 70 mph due to that more upright windshield. Sequoia within the same cost range , better seven seater then the Gx , quieter than both of them , more comfortable than both of them specially on the highway , less plasticky than both of them, use regular gas, built here in the good old USA. Yes , would like to think that even do it may not have the same fit and finished as something made in Japan ,,, makes me feel good to know that my money feed someone’s kid in Texas. I see the LC for someone that spends a lots of time climbing Engineer Pass and the Gx for a mom that likes a seven seater but not as bulky as the Sequoia. I would strongly suggest driving at least 20-30 miles on and off the highway all three of them before spending $80 Ks. You said, "Yes the GX had more push but I felt like you had to wait a little before it moved..." I bought mine (from a middle eastern woman) and couldn't believe how pokey it felt off the line, so I did some googling and found out about this issue. Installed a Shiftpower Throttle Response Controller per online recommendations and it immediately solved that problem.

Here's the hard truth as to why car companies jacked up their prices the last few years. During covid when production was really low, dealerships tacked on their markups -often more than $10K per vehicle. Customers still bought and the mfgs saw this. So they basically decided that they wanted a piece of that action and raised their prices as much as they have, seeing that customers apparently were willing to pay that already. The Wall St Journal had an article on that - basically the driver of inflation the last few years were car dealerships gouging customers. And customers willing to take it. This is why we have a $75K Toyota with a rental car interior, cheap plastic bits all over the exterior, and a four cylinder motor.

That is only one piece of the puzzle. When you dilute the value of the dollar by sending money to other countries and when you are giving welfare to non-citizens, you are diluting the value of the dollar to the point where 25% inflation over the last four years has occurred. Up to 55% when it comes to groceries. Car manufacturers didn't impact the price of eggs.

@@mediocreman2 that is a false argument. Our gdp and relative dollar value to other currency places us in better position to buy foreign products. Look at yen to dollar and euro to dollar. I choose the GX for the twin turbo v6 as my adventure road trip car. Since the GX will not be my daily driver, mpg was not as important as the driving dynamics of the twin turbo. Not a fan of hybrid drivetrains on the open road where torque and power is a must when accelerating past other vehicles. The GX has loads of torque and power on the highways. I could not be more pleased with the 10 speed transmission with the v6 power. On my trip to Mammoth,Ca I never felt a lack of power or the transmission searching for the right gear. The transmission was transparent meaning I did not notice it on the trip. GX for me was the right choice.

We got a Land Cruiser with premium package last weekend. We did pay MSRP, but we had to drive 200 miles to a small town dealer to get the exact color combo the wife wanted. Other dealers wanted as much as 15k over (lol) for the same vehicle. I drove it home and it pleasantly surprised me. I've driven several new Tundras and Sequoias and found the V6 drivetrain to be buzzy and the interior quality to be junky compared to my Ram Rebel. Everything in the LC feels solid old-school Toyota build quality, and the 4cyl hybrid is very smooth and torquey. The seats are very comfy. I haven't noticed any wind noise issues, but the upright design hits every bug on the road. We got 20mpg on the trip home. I'm hoping that improves slightly as the engine wears in. Things I don't love- it could use more interior storage, fuel tank is on the small side, the infotainment is not as intuitive as my RAM (but there's a lot more to it), and the sun visors do not pass the Uri and Jakob test. Overall she loves it, and we're looking forward to seeing what the aftermarket comes out with. Me personally, I have a big crush on the GX550 Overtrail. But as stated in the video they're pretty rare at the moment.

However for my wife and I the GX felt more comfortable but the LC looked much better, to me anyway. We will see what happens tomorrow. Thanks for the review!

Can't go wrong with either. I have nothing against the hybrid per se, in fact wouldn't mind it. But for my use, cargo space is most important. Room lost to the battery in the rear makes the Lexus my choice. In fact my wife & I already decided on the Lexus as we are near replacing our 16 year old SUV. Overall, I don't drive enough annually to worry about fuel economy.

I'm with Chase. GX 550. But thinking a 3rd row (my wife's car) is not essential but nice to have, I'd go the base Premium and in my area I can get those easily at MRSP, whereas my Toyota dealer wanted 70K for the base Land Cruiser-Land Cruiser an over 6k markup... I'm waiting for the new 4Runner in the fall, a base TRD Off-Road (like my '14 Trail 4Runner) for probably 50K, maybe just under might be the winner for me. The Tacoma Off-Road bests the Land Cruiser acceleration numbers by nearly a second according to Car and Driver and is about a half second off the GX but with about 3 mpg more than the GX, and only 1-2 mpg behind the Land Cruiser.

Seems like the Landcruiser hybrid system is similar to what I have in my 2022 Mercedes E450 All-Terrain Wagon, with the 42V Hybrid battery providing the torque-fill while the turbo is spooling up (3.0L Inline-6 twin-scroll single-turbo in the Mercedes, unlike the 4-cylinder single-turbo in the LC), and once the engine rpm spools up, the big turbo in the gas engine takes over. The 42V system intervenes everytime an extra power/torque boost is needed to help the gas engine.

Few reviewers mention this, but the 120V 2400W power inverter in the Land Cruiser is a big deal for a lot of campers/overlanders. The GX only has a 120V 400W power inverter due to its conventional engine. If the GX is offered with a hybrid in the future then that would also allow it to have a 2400W power inverter

If the LC had the V6 it wouldn't be close. I personally like the look of the LC better. The off-road Lexus is slightly more expensive for less product but the bigger V6 engine, which is known to have bearing issues and far more expensive for the + not to mention the wait and markup. The KDSS suspension is very intriguing, ngl. The Lexus is very capable off road, but I think it's more oriented for road use. The Toyota is the offroad/camper. I also like the buttons over touch screen, but I'm old school. I use a touch screen everyday delivering and it's tough to navigate while moving whereas buttons you can use without having to look once familiar enough. I ordered the LC yesterday w/ the premium package in Underground. Just over 68K. No wait.

I've driven both - LC 2nd row has a snap over cover for the baby seat hooks that runs across your arse and is noticeable and a bit uncomfortable. The Lexus has the same thing, but the material and construction makes it unnoticeable. The uneven space when the seats are laid down in the LC is a no go for anyone who wants to try to sleep in the back of their vehicle whereas the OT+ and Luxury and Luxury + have power seat buttons that make everything flat to lay on. I think the LC is grossly overpriced. If they dropped the price 12-15K it would be worth buying over the GX if you didn't care about extra (and comfortable) seating. Otherwise, the Lexus GX Luxury + is the best choice.

I really want to like the Land Cruiser better. But that battery hump in the back and the lack of the 3rd row seating pretty much kills it as an option for me (wife would veto a car without a 3rd row). Although I understand Overtrail also doesn't have 3rd row. So that means for the same price, I'd have to go with the GX550 Premium+. The downside with that trim is the lack of the off-road drivetrain goodies. But if I'm honest, it'd be a mall crawling grocery getter for the most part.
