Bad EGR valve is causing my Check engine light and Trac Off light to come on. This video is to do the replacement with an OEM EGR valve from Lexus. Make sure you pick up a couple of gallons of Red coolant and Here are the parts including the gaskets:

UPDATE: I feel like the radiator coolant did not need to be drained to do this valve remove and install. I would just clamp off the coolant hoses leading to the EGR valve and just be careful there are no fluids left in there when i disconnect the hoses. After the new EGR valve goes in, i would recheck my radiator coolant level and make sure to burp any air in the system.
Update: The CEL and trak off light turned off by itself within 2 hours combined driving time. The coolant did drop of some so i had to top it off for the second time.

SUPER helpful vid. My rig threw a check engine light/Trac off warning, and idle was horrible. Stalled twice on startup. Had the code checked and it was the EGR valve. Instead of buying a new one, I just removed/cleaned the existing one with a few cans of carb cleaner and some small carb cleaning wire brushes. And per the update in the video notes, I skipped the coolant drain. No issues performing the job without it. Unhooked the battery for 10 min to clear the code, and we’re good to go. Saved $700 in parts + labor from the dealer. 10/10.

Because this is a highpoint in the radiator flow loop. I neither clamped hoses nor did the radiator flush. I just worked on engine while it was cold so fluids were low and hadn’t expanded. I lost at most 1 tbsp of liquid when pulling off hoses. Thank you so much for video .. got P006a code and hard sputtering at light… cleaned the whole system and replace cheap 2 screws on Egr electric component… one stripped very easily. Size is M5 mechanical If anyone else strips it and needs replacing.

Thank Gipstetz, just fyi, i been driving the truck around quite some time after the install and the truck drives like day 1. Only thing it won't do is turn off the CEL by itself. It needs to be done manually by a OBD reader. Thanks for the comments Gipstetz!

Update: The CEL and trak off light turned off by itself within 2 hours combined driving time. The coolant did drop of some so i had to top it off for the second time.

Just as a sanity check for any emissions related check engine light, first look at your cheapest fix…. Your gas cap. 👍

Great video, I guess I have been lucky so far on my 2016 with 83,000 miles, but I often take road trips from Florida to Kentucky and Tennessee which might help burn off excess carbon.

Hi Muhammad, I have a long list of to-do's already so it may be awhile. Just to make sure, are u getting a buzzing sound when u plug something in? Thats the protection circuit stating you're overloading. Turn the ignition off then turn the ignition back on and plug something smaller. That outlet behind the 3rd row is only rated for products less than 100 watts. I normally just plug in small devices such as cellphone chargers. If you are considering plugging in laptops, etc...then i would switch out the inverter that is in back of that plastic panel. Lexus provides you a very small one for small usage.

Yeah.... I've had my eye on that for quite some time. And the reason why I've held off as long as i did is just that....its hard. I will reconsider since you're the second person that has hit me up. The first one was "skinny girl pants" a few months ago. lol.

@@GXBOB it’s not an easy job. But, I know hundreds or thousands of people would benefit greatly from a video on how to do the PCV valve. You’d be a sensation to the community if you were able to video it for us. I know I’d appreciate it greatly. I’ve had a new oem PCV valve in my garage for a year because I’m afraid to do the job, lol!

just curios, can you use the CRC Throttle body cleaner to clean the EGR really well and continue to use it? Or would it just be better to get a new one put it in since you would need to take it off anyway? I ask because I cleaned some sensors on a car I had with the CRC electronics cleaner and the sensors never acted up again.

I actually did just that in a different video. I cleaned the hell out of it. But since i already had everything removed and a new EGR wasn’t that expensive i just decided to replace it with a new one.

Excellent video! Does a bad or caked up EGR valve cause bad gas millage? Getting 250 miles on a full tank on a Lexus GX 470, used to get like 300 mi. Changed all four O2 sensors, changed all 8 spark plugs, all 8 ignition coils, PCV valve, OEM mass air flow sensor as well as fuel injection cleaning and throttle body cleaning at the dealer. Secondary air injection pump went bad but currently I have the by pass kit by Hewitt Technologies. Never thought about the ERG valve, 225k miles and still rides like new except for the horrendous gas millage!

Major signs that your EGR valve is on it’s way out are rough idle, poor performance, and/or decreased mileage regardless of check engine lights pop on or not. Is a major component in your emissions system.

I just bought a 2022 GX. 400 miles the CEL came on and I took the dealer. Lexus is finally recommending replacement of the EGR valve. How many miles were on your GX and what year is your GX in this video?

I had a 2016 with 97,000 miles before it got totaled in a real bad wreck. Never had a code like this to deal with. I wonder if it's the quality of fuel that is being used that causes this. I didn't have the secondary air issue either, the one with your workaround/mod by putting the filter on the outside.

A 2008 GX470 can outlast your 2016 under the right conditions such as environment, driving habits, etc...So i wouldn't use that as my deciding factor. Age and mileage are only reference points to guide you. Just know that you're one of the luckier ones but eventually, your time will come because carbon build-up is just a fact of owning a truck with an emissions recycling system. The junk has to go somewhere and the governments don't want it in the environment. You can do certain things that help your luck prolong by driving longer routes because consistent hot engines burn off the carbon deposits. Short routes don't give the soot/deposits time to burn off so they end up settling in your system.

@@GXBOB It's probably what you just alluded to, the longer routes burning off the deposits. Still, plenty of guys use the cheaper fuels (some even regular gas as opposed to the required premium) or don't use additives to facilitate that process of burning deposits. As far as 2008 vs newer models, aren't they all the same engine, that now infamous million mile 4.6L V8? Only one or two more years left to get a GX until they go twin turbo V6. I am thinking of doing so since they finally refreshed the interior.

Bob have you considered doing an egr delete? My gx is nearing 200k. If deleting the egr keeps the engine a little cleaner I'll take the trade off.

No sir, i have never considered modifying any emissions systems related parts. What i don't want to happen is to go in for my smog check and have it fail due to unique data that are outside it's normal parameters. Before any major mod, i'd sit down and try to downplay Toyota engineer's basic reasoning of why they included something in their design. If it made sense then i live with it. If i can add something to better it, without changing its intent, then i'll do it. If i have to complete erase something that is supposed to be there by design, then i would be hesitant. My 2 cents.

Hey Bob do you think it is possible for a quick fix just to get you back in the saddle. Yes Bob I am a cheap old Vietnam era Veteran on a budget. Seriously could you remove most of the hardware holding the valve and not drain the anti-frz ( clamp of lines with anti-frz ) remove one long tube that faces the black cover that you will remove then spray cleaner all over the moving parts etc then slap it back together, smile, drive and save the Bitcoin-up, then do the job with new oem-parts. Please give me you input sir. (thank you)

You have to remember, there’s mores than one way to kill someone and get rid of the body. The steps i took were in line with the Lexus dealerships methods but if i were to do it all over again, i would definitely clamp all the lines to the EGR valve. I thought it was really unnecessary to drain the antifreeze but i learned that fact after i removed everything.

Yo Danny, I started up the car and it ran GREAT!!! I drove all evening just to make sure it wasn't a fluke and so far the car started up fine each and every time and drove like it was brand new. The CEL is still on. So i had to make sure it wasn't anything else, but so far so good. According to online sources, EGR fixes still need to be cleared with a reader.

Nice one Bob. Just out of curiosity, did you not want to attempt an EGR cleaning after finding the part so cheap or is there another reason for not cleaning it?

Hey Colin, this is an easy one to answer. The only way you can tell if your cleaning is successful is to put everything back and start the car. If cleaning is not successful, you'd have to tear everything apart again and replace the part. I guess money wasn't an issue so i went for brand new parts instead of just rolling the dice on this one.

@@colinberry2991 Sooo....here is where i have an issue. Lexus instructions says a radiator drain, passenger side engine block drain, and driver side engine block drain was part of the disassembly. I only did the radiator and passenger side engine block. I left the driver side intact. When i removed the water hoses off the EGR, nothing came out. So i'm not even sure if we need to drain the passenger side engine block. Just to make sure i did the flush and drain after i was done and rechecked my fluid levels till the stabled off after a few drives.

Was there a reason you replaced your EGR? Did you have a check engine light or was your GX coding? Did you replace it with an upgraded Lexus/Toyota part? I see you bought a new oem part. Is that a revision and better version?

My truck threw a P006A fault code and my car started to stall while driving. Every time i started the car it would stall on the first attempt then start fine on the second attempt. While driving, the truck had really poor acceleration as if it was starving for fuel. I dismissed any ignition issues since no P03XX codes came up. It was either MAF, EGR, or PCV. I did them one at a time in the order of easy to the hardest job. The EGR is an OEM Toyota/Lexus part with the same part number as the older models so i doubt its a new version. The part is not faulty as your driving habits, your fuel quality, your environment play a huge part in carbon/soot build-up in your emission recycling system. The longer your driving the better for your EGR since a hot engine and longer routes give the sludge build-up time to burn off and not settle within your system.

The coolant reservoir didn’t seem to be in the way of the EGR tubes. Is it really necessary to remove?

@@miltondejesus2076 That’s part of the radiator flush and fill. Your EGR valve is liquid cooled. Removal of your EGR opens up the lines and you’ll lose alot of coolant. You can keep your reservoir with old coolant but since you’re adding new coolant why not just do your reservoir too? It’s literally 5 minutes.

Hi Bob I have a 2011 gx460 with 212,000 miles on it (Bought the truck 2 years ago with 190,000) P0301 cylinder 1 misfire came on and I replaced all spark plugs because they all looked aged-old found some oil on 1 and 3, problem went away and 200 miles after came back, then I replaced the 2 coils (1-3) Problem went away2 weeks. drove it 1,500 miles and everything was fine until I got back home with the same code p0301 cylinder 1 misfire Check engine light on solid, trac off light on solid and 4lo blinking Any suggestions, honestly don’t want to take it to stealersship Any input is really appreciate it Thanks

Hey Victor, after you've exhausted options such as spark plugs/coils, gas cap check then that 3 light combo (cel, 4lo, trac off) , then it finally points to your SAIS. I've had this issue plenty of times on several GX's, hence my video on secondary injection pump mod as preventative maintenance. But since yours is already too late to prevent the failure, you're going to have to replace your Secondary Air Injection Pump. I've had mine replaced by the dealership for free because it's an issue Lexus knows about. Here is the link to the extended warranty for it. If you passed the deadline, ask if the dealer will do it for you out of good faith. Here is the link u should read into....and you are not alone. This happens to every GX owner. Hi Bob Guess what? I started the truck with all of the Christmas lights on and checked to see if the SAIP was working during the first 30 seconds and nothing- it’s dead- not working. Cleared the lights with my scanner and started again to see if it will start with the lights cleared and nothing again. Should I check the fuse now? (Or called a day and get a new one) Sorry for bothering you with my inexperience on this but loving your videos and getting enough courage to became a DIY Thanks for your input

@@victormarchan918 ooooh Victor. There are so many variables here hence why i do preventative maintenance before the infamous xmas lights. I assumed u have a scanner but you didn't note what your codes were. That should be a start. Also you didn't mention year, model, mileage of your truck either which is kinda important because different components go out at different times. Do a simple removal by taking off the SAIS housing and check the condition of the foam filter to see if its still intact (if u have a GX460, of course).

When i received a CEL and Trac Off light, i had it scanned. The codes pulled were P006A with no P300x codes, the symptoms were engine misfires. This tells automatically tells me it is either MAF sensor or bad EGR valve and NOT sparkplugs or coils. I did the MAF sensor first and the misfires still occurred. So i did the EGR valve replacement and now the truck runs like a winner.! I am so relieved.

@@KBradAdams Hey Brad, so sorry i did not get notified of your comment. I just accidently saw it by surfing thru this today. If you haven't already found out, the P0455 is triggered by your evap system to recirculate fuel vapors, while EGR is exhaust fume recirculation. So my answer is to check everything leading to your fuel tank including something as ridiculous as your gas cap, then check all your lines leading to and from your fuel tank. I haven't heard of any P0455 that was a result of a stuck EGR valve.

They are all over the Lexus and Toyota forums. The infamous check engine light and Track Off light combo is caused by a stuck EGR valve and/or dirty Mass airflow sensor. Once the combo lights come on, your car will stall every time you try to start it and once it starts, your car will hesitate at every red light. Its like driving a dying car. To answer your question, yes it happens a lot. P006A or P0401 fault code will register when you take it to a mechanic. Go ahead and google it. @@GXBOB Is there a way to clean the EGR valve to make it work again? On the turbo diesel Toyotas, the EGR valves are a bit more complicated than the Lexus ones since they also consist of EGR position sensors.

@@RedDevilTuning Yes, absolutely. The bests thing to do is to take it off and clean it way before the CEL pops on. At least it has a fighting chance. By the time your CEL comes on, it's gotten so cruddy and stuck, not even soaking it in gasoline will save it. What i could have done was test my theory by doing a cleaning first but to do a drain and fill was just too inconvenient to justify replacing it with a $215 piece of mind.

@@RedDevilTuning There’s no documented schedule maintenance for these list of things. It’s basically knowledge sharing in the community. Some people just rather take care of the headache when the CEL pops on in the middle of a family road trip. I prefer to tackle these things on a lazy Sunday.

No you do not need to drain the radiator fluid to replace the EGR. I would just pinch off those hoses with a clamp in the event you still have fluid running through them. I only followed Lexus procedures in doing so. If i had a second go around, i would probably leave the radiator fluid intact and check my fluids after the new EGR valve is installed. Keep in mind you'll still need to get any air in the system since you removed th hoses, so i'd burp the system and level off any coolant that did escape. I'll make note of it in the body of the description. Thanks for the reminder.
