This is, by far, the best how-to video I’ve ever viewed. Lighting was great, volume and enunciation were excellent, explanation was clear and practical, and the video covered every part of “Where is it?”, “How to remove.”, and “How to install.” without all the other filler that most videos try to add to make themselves sound smart. Now I’m rambling. Great job with this video! I can imagine it’s helped hundreds of people!

I really appreciate the video, Chris. You've helped me a lot. I have a 95 Caprice. Looks like it uses the same EGR valve as yours. Got it off today (with the help of WD-40, those nuts weren't budging). Glad I had a variety of same size wrenches as it was too tight back there for certain widths and lengths. Turns out I need a new one. Tried cleaning as per your instructions (it was gunky) but the valve just won't hold a vacuum. Waiting on a new part. The markup at local major parts shops is quite steep, $30-40 more than Rock Auto and Amazon. For those that want to check their EGR valve I suggest getting a new gasket before hand as well as a telescoping mirror. A Fel-Pro for this model is about $2. Unlike Chris' my gasket was well worn and baked on. Had to pry it off and clean the mating surfaces. The mirror really came in handy as I could not otherwise see back there without taking photos.

geesh,people giving thumbs down were just GM haters,dont need no negatively here anyways. they can go away. Truth is they learned something,just dont want to admit it.I always had to replace the vacuum line because the fitting and hose was always rotten from engine heat. seems like every older car I ever bought needed a new one too. didnt matter what brand car. they are mechanical and do wear out. you would think by now they would have invented something that didnt operate on a bellows,vacuum system. Thats so old school. I like your Vett myself. I was a Mustang guy. Problem is they suck driving in Northern MI weather. If I were to buy one now, it wouldnt see a snow flake. I love the old school cars better than the new shit they put out. At least back then there were less things to go wrong. I own a Subaru again,love those boxer engines. Reminds me of the old Volkswagens. I told the wife,if I stripped off the electronics,it would be the same engine our first Subaru had,less the electronic stuff. The basic design is still the same.
@HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP8 жыл бұрын
From Wikki: *In internal combustion engines, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is a nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions reduction technique used in petrol/gasoline and diesel engines. EGR works by recirculating a portion of an engine's exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders. This dilutes the O2 in the incoming air stream and provides gases inert to combustion to act as absorbents of combustion heat to reduce peak in-cylinder temperatures. NOx is produced in a narrow band of high cylinder temperatures and pressures.In a gasoline engine, this inert exhaust displaces the amount of combustible matter in the cylinder. In a diesel engine, the exhaust gas replaces some of the excess oxygen in the pre-combustion mixture.[1] Because NOx forms primarily when a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen is subjected to high temperature, the lower combustion chamber temperatures caused by EGR reduces the amount of NOx the combustion generates (though at some loss of engine efficiency).[2] Gasses re-introduced from EGR systems will also contain near equilibrium concentrations of NOx and CO; the small fraction initially within the combustion chamber inhibits the total net production of these and other pollutants when sampled on a time average. Most modern engines now require exhaust gas recirculation to meet emissions standards.*

By runs "better" I'm assuming you mean better for emissions, not performance?
@chrisfix9 жыл бұрын
Pie Eyed Performance too. The computer was trying to use the a/f ratio for the normal flow of the egr and that was not working so it had to retard timing.
@DENicholsAutoBravado9 жыл бұрын
Pie Eyed Maybe it's surprising but PCM's are generally designed to help an engine run better. So disable the EGR and expect slower lap times/poorer results on the Dyno.

@frosty984129 жыл бұрын
Pie Eyed It's bad for performance for sure, just google "egr junk intake" and see for yourself. To avoid a/f ratio issues EGR should be "killed" in the ECU itself, ECU remapped and physically block the flow holes on the intake for the EGR valve. I've had it done on my car. Also when performing this it's good to take the intake off and clean the soot and carbon. Much better airflow

So If I remove the EGR Valve, and it holds a vacuum, I should just clean out the carbon and use the same valve? If it doesn't hold a vacuum, then I should get a new one? Will cleaning it help it keep a vacuum? The mechanic said I needed a new EGR valve according to the computer, so I'm gonna try to clean/fix it myself. I'd rather clean it bc a new one is about $150!
@chrisfix7 жыл бұрын
Correct. Cleaning will only help it slide open and closed. The vacuum is all about the condition of the diaphragm.
@martystevens39696 жыл бұрын
Sam Sloan The EGR should hold vacuum until you release the vacuum. EGR valves can stick open a little. Carbon can hold it open. Try a gas tank carb. cleaner to keep it clean. It also cleans the cylinders. If it leaks down replace it! Check the passage below the EGR valve if it's clogged.

Nope. The EGR actually makes it run worse. It was added in effort to reduce emissions by injecting non combustible particles in the intake, using less fuel IN THEORY. However, EGRs make the engine less efficient and take away performance, while being harmful in the long run. That's why it's one of the most common modifications, especially on diesel trucks.

They are supposed to be hot, they dont cool down in an expansion chamber or anything...so they are actually warmung up the combustiin gased that enter the combustion chamber...and as the carnott law states: the less ∆temp between motir and combustion gasrd the less energy is produced( this is why cars usully kick harder in autum/winter than in hit summer)

@@ramyswar296 egr has nothing to do with that.. lower emissions ye but the price is high, bad mpg and slower car in the lower rpm. i blanked mine, got it mapped off and the car is way more responsible after that.

Just did it! Grabbed a whole new valve, the truck is 23 years old. The big nut was sooo stuck we ended up torching her and was able to break it free. Then boom smooth sailing

I've blocked my EGR off. It's complete junk. After a month of normal driving carbon buildup starts occur and you need to rev it like crazy to get it out. Only saves very small portion of fuel and causes more problems.

why not replace with a new gasket if it is so easy to do so?

Kevin maybe an older gasket is more rubbery and molded so it would work better than a new one

Kevin Just like i tell my gf if its not broken don't fix it. She kept messing with everything under the hood and the car wouldn't turn on.
@chrisfix9 жыл бұрын
Kevin It is not easy to do. You need to take it off which is going to be a real pain since it is stuck on there good. You need to clean the gasket surface without getting anything in the intake, you need to put the new one on and hope it seals. Not worth all of the effort when I know the original works.

Amateur q. How does hot exhaust gas help cool the engine? Or did i misunderstand?
@The_Osprey9 жыл бұрын
Alpha Bravo From what I've been told the EGR is an emission thing and has absolutely nothing to do with cooling off cylinders. Hot exhaust gases are ALWAYS hotter than the air coming in the engine. Not sure why he claimed that was its purpose.
@JoshRuiz169 жыл бұрын
The exhaust gases displace oxygen during the combustion process. By routing them back into the cylinders, it decreases the amount of oxygen that is able to mix with fuel. Keep in mind that it is a very small amount that gets mixed in but it definitely prevents the cylinders from getting too hot and makes the exhaust cleaner. I'll also add that this system is not active during wide open throttle for maximum performance and minimum tree hugging so don't worry
@frosty984129 жыл бұрын
Alpha Bravo It also warms up the coolant, besides that only bad for the engine for sake of emmisions.
@terminatorj069 жыл бұрын
It prevents overheating, after combustion process. Doesn't necessarily cool them off like he said, but does aid in the prevention of overheating, by stabilizing the air/fuel mixture.
@Shane-Singleton9 жыл бұрын
Alpha Bravo The only thing I can think of is that by doing this and preventing some oxygen from getting in to the mix it prevents a potential lean condition which would cause the cylinders to burn hotter. But That should all be carefully regulated in a fuel injected car anyway so *shrugs*. I'm not an expert so I could be 100% wrong.

Why are exhaust manifolds always so rusty? Even brand new cars have rusty manifolds.
@thecma38 жыл бұрын
I'm not by any means an expert, but I'd hypothesize that it's because the exhaust is one of the hottest parts of the engine. We're you to put any sort of coating on it to prevent rust, it would likely burn off, and rustproof alloys like stainless steel might just be too expensive. To anybody who wants to tell me I'm wrong, feel free.
@HussainObama8 жыл бұрын
it's because they are usually made of cast iron. Cast iron handles heat very well.

not necessarily rusty, more like discoloured because of the heat. if car driven regularly, it's all good because any water will quickly vaporize off anyway believe it ir not, but stainless steel also slightly corrodes, hence the goldish colour on stainless steel headers over time. also discoloration by temperature.

Don't clean it at all. Rip that junk off, throw it in the trash and replace the egr with a block off plate. The egr just hurts gas mileage and performance.
@jccchapman76046 жыл бұрын
It does not hurt gas mileage or performance. It reduces the combustion temperature during part throttle operation to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. The EGR valve is closed at full throttle.

It does reduce power at times, but sending air with very little burn-ready oxygen into the intake reduces the amount of fuel needed for a stoichiometric mix.
