A small detail about Debestes that I absolutely love: they're the only prosecutors who actually wear their badges. That's no coincidence: it was estabilished in AAI that the reason why prosecutors don't wear their badges was because it rubbed von Karma the wrong way (and then it kinda became a tradition, I guess). So the only prosecutors to wear them are Blaise, who enjoyed fucking with von Karma just for fun, and Sebastian, who can't read the atmosphere for his life. AAI2 has amazing character designs.

Honestly, Blaise Debeste has to be the most evil character in the whole series. Seriously I have a whole essay to write about his sheer despicable nature. Manfred von Karma was a despicable perfectionist but at least he raised his children to be competent prosecutors, both with a great efficiency rate, which he himself had. Damon Gant was a manipulative bastard who made his partner believe her sister killed a fellow detective and made her become Chief Prosecutor to control the Prosecutor’s Office, but at least he was a jovial individual to the very end, who did what he did due to the failings of the system and a strong desire for criminals to face justice no matter how the law may contradict this. Matt Engarde was a sly blackmailing fucker who couldn’t even do his own dirty work and hired an assassin to force his attorney to get him out of prosecution, but he was far from the worst in terms of criminals in terms of actions. Dahlia Hawthorne was a remorseless devil of a lady who had a surprisingly high body count, prevented lovers from saying goodbye before one died and even tried to kill our main protagonist, but she wasn’t even as competent as she hoped to be and actually had quite the tragic upbringing. Quercia Alba was an arrogant, corrupt parasite who doomed the economy of a country and became infamous for abusing his “EXTRATERRITORIAL RIGHTS” to casually commit murder, but he saved many lives in war including those of his homeland’s royal family when he was a general and not an ambassador. Kristoph Gavin was an objectively awful, yet condescendingly calm mastermind who got Phoenix’s career ended for 7 years and was one of the main causes of the Dark Age of the Law, all for his desire to become renowned, but he at least was a good mentor to Apollo and taught him that even those closest of you should not be free from doubt. Robert Crogley/Ashley Graydon was a duplicitous fiend who was willing to steal government information to sell for easy cash using his position, but not only did he never mean to hurt anyone aside from Cosney Megundal/Magnus McGilded, who was a real piece of scum, and just wanted to escape any possibility of poverty and misery. Vortex Hart/ Mark Stronghart was very similar to Gant, a man consumed by a desire for National justice to the point of becoming a monster that caused the murder of innocents to keep an iron fist on the law, but he also did so out of a love for justice as well as to help solve the crisis of crime at the time where 1 person in every 10 was a criminal, to make sure no criminal got off Scot-free. The Phantom was a heartless shell of a human who ruined the lives of the Cykes and Blackquill families along with being the other person who began the misery of the Dark Age of the Law, but he was just doing his job as an international spy to the efficient degree he was assigned to and there was the tragic aspect that he completely lost any sense of self. Even Ga’ran Sigatar Khura’in, the traitorous, vile bitch who shattered her family’s happiness to pieces, instigated immense legal corruption in Khura’in and killed Apollo’s father, at least pretended to act like a kind, benevolent ruler like her sister. But Blaise DemotherfuckingBeste? He has none of those redeeming qualities. And I love it!!!! Backstory? Starting from his early career, he made people disappear, from a rival detective to even his own wife. He had a son who he took pleasure in insulting, using his power to make people give Sebastian De beste grades and awards just so he could deluded himself into believing he was a genius prosecutor, all for the excuse of making him easy to insult and belittle in a field Blaise dominated in. He sold evidence in black market auctions, warped the truth of many cases, assisted in the replacement of a country’s president, caused the twisting of this game’s Mastermind into a paranoid, hateful chess master, and even caused the start of the whole franchise. If he never kept the disappearance of Issac Dover’s body a secret, and thus, caused von Karma to blackmail Jeffrey Masters into confessing for a crime he did not commit, he would have not gotten a proper basis to penalise von Karma and start the DL-6 incident, causing the death of Gregory Edgeworth, the defaming of the Fey clan and Miles being adopted by von Karma, along with many lives being ruined, and allowing several corrupt people to rise up. And why did he do all of these villainous acts. For only two reasons. To keep a higher position where no one would defy him, and for simple child-like, cruel glee. Of course his actions lead to the rising of both Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth, who became the best of both defence and prosecutors, who took apart all his power and the people he allowed to prosper in corruption, but none of that would have happened had he decided not to hide evidence about the IS-7 incident. Even worse, he discredits the work that Gregory Edgeworth put into ruining von Karma’s perfect record, as he was just waiting to give Manfred a penalty anyways, with no input from the attorney, to prevent the King of Prosecutors from challenging his authority. All Gregory Edgeworth gave him was an excuse. Personality? Well he’s just the most malicious little shit imaginable. Sure, he may act a little like an old, nostalgic yet wise man, but he doesn’t even try to hide his cruel evil in his mannerisms. I mean, he looks like the leader of the biker gang, yet he still commands respect from his subordinates of law, carrying that outfit with pride. That’s the sheer confidence he carried himself with, bringing him a lot of charisma. One minute, he could be tugging his “beard” with crocodile tears filling his goggles, as he reminisces about the missus, and the next he could demonstrate a toothy grin, making fun of both Sebastian and Franziska and playing with his lighter as he burns papers (likely pieces of evidence) before he goes on his merry way to arrest a framed girl. He is a perfect love to hate character who just takes such relish in his petty, cruel evil, as he talks down to everyone around him, to the point that even though he is a despicable villain, I can’t help but find him amusing. But he is still a massive, imposing force who embodies the corruption of the P.I.C, his reach extending to the very beginning of everything Ace Attorney, this theme embodying this. For Blaise is no more part of the P.I.C, he is the P.I.C. Redeem-ability? None at all!! Every single instance he cries is clearly insincere and is only used to garner sympathy or mock others. The closest thing to being sympathetic in his life is the disappearance of his wife, which is implied to be of Blaise’s doing. He doesn’t appreciate his son at all despite Sebastian’s efforts, and despite preventing him from properly learning, blames his son solely for being an idiot. He tries to get Edgeworth disbarred and Kay arrested for his crime, He blackmails, murders and schemes only for himself and nothing else. For nothing else is important. I mean with that much power, he practically is the law, at least until Edgeworth finds the truth with the Mastermind’s aid. He even orders a kidnapping to make sure his old case covering buddy, Patricia Roland get illogically acquitted for the murder of Horace Knightley, and still remains confident after Edgeworth despite his initial arrest, for the mere fact he can just weasel his way out with some Blaising of evidence. He is pure, confident evil, and he wears it like a badge of honour, along with the badges of every prosecutor who he had disbarred in his career (he even uses some as jacket buttons). And there is even some possibility that he could be physically abusing Sebastian if you read into the moment when he flinched from his father’s approach. His sheer depravity is so dark and deep, that it makes him the perfect fuel for both Justine “Queen MILF” Courtney and Sebastian “The Best Boy” Debeste to both shine in their arcs and rise as some of my favourite characters in the entire series with Sebastian taking the top spot, and Justine in second place. This, to me, is all why I find Blaise Debeste the most diabolical and evil character in all of Ace Attorney, along with being one of the most entertaining and best antagonists in the series. Ace Attorney Investigations 2 was truly excellent game, that has only been challenged by three other games in my opinion, one the DGS Chronicles, mainly the second game, one Trials and Tribulations and one Dual Destinies. And if any of you have any OBJECTIONS!!! to my claims, please make your case, I’ll be happy to see it

With Edgeworth taking down a corrupt ambassador (Alba) and a corrupt PIC chairman/ex-chief prosecutor (Blaise), a followup thought occurred to me about what might be the logical next step for picking AAI3's hypothetical final boss (following the recurring theme of Edgeworth making it his business to expose/shut down corruption): A Secretary-General (of the Ace Attorney universe equivalent of the United Nations)! However, the main issue (that's bothering me at the moment) is that I'm not sure how to avoid making the Secretary-General antagonist a carbon copy/more annoying version of Alba; plus, I'm still trying figure out what sort of nuances (and other memorable traits) could elevate such an antagonist beyond the "I'm untouchable/completely protected by the law" attitudes that defined both Alba and Blaise.
@Rides1283man4 жыл бұрын
@@topnotchshinobi Blaise isn't really the main villain in AAI2 though. I think there is no "logical next-step". Quercus Alba is an ambassador but Simon Keyes is literally just a clown. Usually, in the Ace Attorney series, villains tend not to have their own theme song. Manfred has Franziska’s version of “Great revival”; Kristoph’s theme is actually the confinement cell’s theme and Engarde shares his theme with Andrew. Dahlia and Gant appear to be the only exceptions. And then there’s this theme. The fact that it’s titled as “The P.I.C ost” and not “Blaise’s ost” is very ironic since Blaise always hides his misdeeds behind his position as chairman of the P.I.C. Never have I met a villain so detestable, so confident with their position, that I just want to wipe the smug smile on Blaise face and put him to jail so badly.
@maltron664 жыл бұрын
I've seen people bash Blaise for ruining the lives of countless people and for being a genuinely despicable person. But one thing that I don't see anyone mention is how Blaise's existence undermine Gregory's work. Before the Forgotten Turnabout, we are led to believe that Gregory is the one responsible for ruining Manfred's record, but in reality... he is not. Because we then discover that Blaise intented to give Manfred a penalty anyway. He was only looking for an excuse to do so, and that's what Gregory provided for him. It makes Gregory seem kind of irrelevant when you think about it.
@goldensp30384 жыл бұрын
Blaize didn't intend to give Manfred penalty, he wanted to manipulate Manfred behind the scenes, everyone knew Manfred like to forge evidence and Blaise just needed direct prove of it so he can blackmail Manfred. Blaise didn't anticipate Gregory to uncover missing body and the fact Manfred will 100% forge it existence so Blaise was forced to give Manfred penalty, no saying that Blaise cared about it thought.
@maltron664 жыл бұрын
@@goldensp3038 It is clearly stated in the game that Blaise always intented to give Manfred a penalty, because Blaise would not allow anyone to defy his power and position like Manfred did. Blaise not expecting Gregory to find Dover's body doesn't change a thing. The only difference it made was that it provided Blaise with a legitimate reason to penalize Manfred. But like I said, it's stated in the game that Blaise had all the intention in the world to penalize Manfred and would have done so, one way or the other.

@@maltron66 One year old comment but hey I'll reply to this. The problem being Von Karma is perfect he has been able to continue forward without anyone finding his trail of forged evidence until now. The fact of the matter was if Blaise didn't do it legitimately it's likely Blaise would be caught by Von Karma.
@maltron663 жыл бұрын
@@dgmbomb I don't think von Karma would be able to do anything against Blaise. Blaise is not an idiot. He knew von Karma was up to no good so he'd be extra careful not to get caught by him. Granted, Blaise mocking Edgeworth in prison and providing him with information that Edgeworth eventually used to convict him was stupid, but that was taunting more than anything else. During that point, Edgeworth had lost his badge and was in a prison cell so Blaise didn't think of him as a threat. I don't think a guy cunning enough to be Chief Prosecutor would make that mistake with a stronger prosecutor like Manfred, especially since Blaise knew Manfred was looking to bring him down. But most importantly, it took a lot of people, some of which had to work from inside the PIC to bring Blaise down. I don't think Manfred could do it alone.

Theme of my most HATED character in all of Ace Attorney. I DESPISE Blaise Debeste, though most of that comes from Sebastian being my favorite Ace Attorney character and Blaise being extremely verbally abusive (and there are hints towards physical abuse such as Seb instinctively shielding himself when Blaise approaches him from the witness stand). But he's also the only villain I can think of without ANY sympathetic qualities in the entire series.

@Zalkova The first game does say that the Chief Prosecutor had covered for von Karma in the past, and it is also not hard to attach a mocking attitude to the conversation. The first game absolutely hinted at an evil (or at least corrupt) Chief Prosecutor but as an undeveloped background character. AAI2 expands on what is given about this background character by developing the concept into Blaise Debeste. Here is the exact conversation between Manfred von Karma and the Chief Prosecutor in Turnabout Goodbyes: Chief Prosecutor... I am sorry. von Karma! It's not like you to make this kind of error... I never would have thought that Edgeworth would be the one to catch you. Karma: I... was careless. I'm sorry, but you will have to be penalized. I've covered for you in the past, but not this time.

Honestly, Blaise Debeste is a mixed bag for me. He is so comically, inhumanly evil that he is almost a cartoon villain. Yet, he is the spur for two of the best character arcs in the franchise. Plus... In terms of the reoccurring theme in ace attorney about how the law can be used to disenfranchise the powerless, this game shows so much more than it tells compared to other games in this series. It's not the most nuanced story in this regard, but it's far better than anything dual destinies did with the Dark Age Of The Law™ Blaise's actions are a part of this. Even if he bullies just to be a bully, to get cruel pleasure from stepping on the people beneath him, he's an example of how our social structures can give free reign to people who would do what Blaise did (even if in the real world, humans tend to have quite complex and contradictory reasons for doing those things). I think if even one more character was as extreme as Blaise, this story would have lost a lot of impact.

Spoilers: Dont read untill finished game You know, I thought the PIC was gonna be irrelivant or retconning. I was really worried during the 3rd chapter about this. That was untill Blaise showed up. This man can "make any truths" as he likes. This man could "make anyone disapear" Everything clicked when it was revealed he was the Chairman & Sebastions dad. While Courtney does state her intensions about wanting Blaise removed, I don't think she could ever bring him to court, let alone accuse him. It explains to me why she was insistantly accusing the wrong people (although her reasoning is sound tbh). She probably was under blaises orders. Espesially during case 2. The mastermind (Simon keys), was someone who was a liability to Blaise. I've noted that poeple think that the death of Gregory Edgeworth was pointless because Blaise was always going to punish von Karma at some point. However, i OBJECT. If we look at the first ace attorney game under the eyes that blaise was talking to Von Karma, during the penality scene, It sounds like Blaise is taunting Vom Karma. Von Karma has no way to take out his anger on blaise. After all, Blaise can make "anyone disapear", so who else can he take out his anger on? The person who he thinks caused this. Gregory, if anything, this game only makes von Karmas revenge plan go from pettyness to something grander for me. Vom Karma killed Gregory not only out of hatred, but also as a way to make sure no one would stand in his way again, just like Blaise would kill anyone who stood in his way. (When we first meet blaise he mentions he made a detective who he butt heads with disapear in his younger times as a procecutor) This game gives Von Karma a motive without Retconning anything the original game did. Instead this game amplifies the motive of the killing. Really impressive writting tbh.
