One of the scariest things about Azula at first in the animated version is her control, this seems absent in this adaptation. The first scene we get of her apart from the sadistic smile in the flashback of Zuko getting burned and her getting sent out by Ozi at the end of season 1 is her practicing lightning bending on her boat. We see a glimmer of her rage when she has 1 hair out of place upon completing the exercise, but she has lid on it. She acts competently and with absolute confidence, is cold, cruel, manipulative and controlling of everyone around her until things start happening that undermine that confidence and we see the cracks in her iron control after which things unravel fast, but very much foreshadowed even from the first scene and the single errant hair. The live action's version is far less scary and threatening because she is not as competent, confident, and controlled which makes her feel more predictable. You never quite knew what Azula would do next in the animation. Her recruiting Ty lee in the animation does a lot of characterization work for her. She is shown to, not just be willing to, but to practically enjoy, threatening the lives and livelihoods of her "friend"'s co-workers whilst putting up a facade of friendliness to her face in order to pressure Ty Lee into joining her. I'm not getting effective underhanded, amoral, gaslighting manipulator from the live action portrayal to nearly the same degree.

They pretty much changed Koh's powers. To my understanding, in the cartoon, if you show emotion in front of Koh, he can steal your face. Rather simple. But in here, the live action, it seems that Koh can manifest his preys' deepest fears and despairs, then prey on them while they are at their emotionally lowest point. I think that's really cool. Much more spiritualistic kind of power.

This show's two major complaints seem to be too many original episodes smashed together and no Aang waterbending. I believe there is a correlation between them. I think the creators purposefully took episodes that mainly pertained to Aang learning about the spirit world and the Avatar state and mashed them together in this first season to create a different Book 1. Then they are going to make season two about learning bending from his friends and firebending with Zuko and against the Fire Lord in season three. This will keep the people who have seen the original series guessing what is going to happen next (at least in some ways). Just a thought.

Personally I enjoy the "prodigy Azula" iteration more because she has everything over Zuko, intelligence, battle-sense, strength, power, the love of her father, she has it all, but in her eyes Zuko has something that she was never able to grasp, the unrequited love of her mother. Though she's through and through the better heir to the throne, her mother still decided to dote on Zuko more and I feel like subconsciously this made Azula feel like she wasn't enough, like she was less than, even though she realistically has it all. She can act like she's leaps and bounds above others, because she really is, but the insecurity derived from her mother issues will always leave her feeling insignificant, like an an attractive, charasmatic, billionare that still can't find happiness

@MoneyGist agreed. If the acting or the script was bad, I'd have problems with it. But because they are meeting someone out of order?? I mean, it's fine to bring it up- but as an interesting topic, not as a criticism. Frankly, some things in the original toon were poorly ordered- like the prison break. Stop doom posting. The creators said they will take fan critics to heart and they have a better timeline for how to pace the rest of the story. Tons of stuff in season 2 and 3 can be cut and still work. Lastly why is everyone saying they will skip the libary...they already made the fox cgi their not gonna wanna waste it...AND DID PEOPLE FORGET, the owl spirt animal was IN THE SPIRIT WORLD...just like the fox they could excuse it and say he was astrol projecting. The physical body can be in the real world in the libary. Though i guess your right that they may skip it to stream line things. Lets just wait and see. In the cartoon he was taken over in the way where he transformed into them only on roku's shrine...he did it again when he turned into kyoshi in front of a location where there was a shrine to her. Later in the series he can commune with them on the lion turtle a strong spiritual being...He gets more spiritual via the guru and such. I think people are blending later parts to make the show seem trash. Its not great but were all asking for the development of season 3 aang in season 1 when season 1 was great and people now call it weak in hindsight cause how good the series gets...now were calling live action bad cause its not peak from day one. He was able to visit the spirit world in this series and commune with his past elder teacher. I dont think their trying to change it for the worst. It doesnt make much of an issue. He doesnt talk to roku that much in season 1 that it's a killer to the series IMO. Later they can just say he can do it now with concentration. Kyoshi in the books also had trouble communing with past lives so did korra @@Light-Rock97

Love what they're doing new - emphasizing Aang's relationship with Gyatso throughout (introducing him in the 'prologue' as it were, the memory of him being what pulled Aang out of the first Avatar State, and now meeting him in the Spirit World) and the new POV cuts to the Fire Nation, especially directly seeing the pressure that warps Azula into a monster and Ozai's characterization. Finding that more interesting than Kataang stuff (which, regardless, would be really weird to watch with flesh-and-blood actors at their age, IMO) or essentially introducing Azula and Ozai as characters in S2 and S3 respectively. But this time around the 'cram pieces from a lot of different episodes together' effort felt a lot more forced and worked a lot less well than the Omashu arc, IMHO. I wonder if they weren't sure whether they wanted to stuff in the "make no expressions" rule in this version or not, so they had Aang's actor play the scene that way just in case, but then decided against making it part of the plot. And that Volume / Green Screen forest background was distractingly bad. That clip of Zuko's actor at the beginning was awesome -- his fight in episode 3 has been one of the highlights of the show, and it makes perfect sense now that I've seen that. Overall, this is a perfectly decent show, I just cannot see anything that would lead me to recommend it to anyone over the original.

Really not a fan of this episode. Seems like the writers decided to throw in anything spirit world related into one ep and it really doesn't work since there's no time to explore each individually. Like the Hei Bai storyline is completely sidelined here which is a big mistake. Only thing I liked was Aang seeing Gyatso again.
@ShizuruNakatsu10 ай бұрын
I feel the same. It's my least favourite episode for those reasons. I don't like that the others just randomly got pulled out into the spirit world with him, or the forced inclusion of Wan Shi Tong. I expected Hei Bai to be the main focus, but I know using prior knowledge of the animated series is a bit unfair. Maybe they just did it to give Aang an excuse to see Roku without the inclusion of the comet.
@AnnMegFair10 ай бұрын
While I do think this is definitely the weakest episode of the show, rewatching it some times and watching reactions to it, I begin to understand more what they tried to do with it. It's like they picked themes for their episodes, and drew from events in the og show to fit these themes: like episode 3 about the price of freedom, and it pulled Jet, Sai, and Omashu in there, because all of these plotlines are ultimately about what is given up in order to stay free. Episode 4 was about making choices, and the main plots in it were Bumi, Zuko, and Iroh making and living with their choices. This episode wasn't so abstract, it was 'the spirit world' episode of this adaptation and so they mashed in everything they could from the spirit world. I hope sincerely Wan Shi Tong was just a little cameo and we'll get more from him in the future, that way it will be a 'oh we saw that guy briefly in S1!' moment for new viewers, and introducing the Fog of Lost Souls is an okay choice, I don't hate it. I will say they fumbled Koh HARD. Like, Koh was one of the most TERRIFYING things from the OG, and here he was kinda just... a creepy spirit guy with a centipede body who snatches up people from the fog and eats their faces. Really, the EASIEST fix for that would have been to have Wan Shi Tong tell him the 'don't show emotions' think about Koh, his terror is immediately restored, and Wan Shi Tong shared knowledge, which when they hit the library in S2 could be a cool hook for 'hey you helped us before!' 'yes but the next guy I helped wanted to use my knowledge to wipe out all waterbenders so I'm not doing that anymore and in fact I will never help you people again!'. Did they did a great job with this episode? Nope. But I think I know what they TRIED to do and it simply didn't work out. Yeah, definitely the weakest episode for me.

At this point I was getting super annoyed, I didn't like the fact events from volume 2 and 3 were being merged with this season. I understand that when you do a retelling of a story you don't want to make it identical for fear of being accused of just copying, but you don't want to deviate from the main story so much that it makes us feel "what did I just watch?" I was wondering why our two guys left for the longest time, this episode showed me exactly why the creators left. The main thing I was yelling at my tv was "Look at Mortal Kombat Annihalation, Netflix, look at what they did in that movie, do you fucking see how that turned out? I think this episode made it pretty clear that Koh doesn't steal your face because you make expressions but tries to lead you towards despair and once you've given into your despair that's when he steals your face. Because both sokka and katara made all kinds of facial expressions as Koh took them and they still have their faces...for now.

Even with “letting go of the show” it’s still a convoluted mess of an episode. I swear this Avatar fanbase won’t let anyone criticize the show no matter what
@olivianpopescu458610 ай бұрын
@sophia21s I'll listen to any criticism but it was clear from the discussion that Navi was so focused on what happened in the cartoon that she didn't even notice what was happening in this version. The rest of the group also had other criticisms (some of which I agree with) but this one I didn't think was warranted

Disappointed with what they’ve done with Soka, if I could label the character in one word it would be “Pity”. It’s not great… Also, in the cartoon, it wasn’t the monkey that tells Aang about Koh, its Avatar Roku in a reflection of water in the spirit world

People wanted more on the relationship with Ozai, and interactions between Azula and Ozai. And, then they complain about Azula not getting her Darth Vader immediately intimidating introduction. That can still be done. She propped up Zhao deceitfully. She openly defied her father because she figured out what he wanted of her. It was something that Zuko failed to do, and it brought the hint of a smile to Ozai's face. She is becoming the ruthless, evil, intelligent and powerful flaming sword for Ozai. I look forward to season two.

These guys are way too focused on the original series. This is an adaptation and there are limitations; it was far from perfect but I enjoyed this season
