Her biggest L started when Zuko told the truth to Ozai of her lying about him killing The Avatar. Think about it, after the Fire Nation succesfully foiled the invasion, Azula will tell their victory to her dad and then she found out that her brother whom she manipulated to go home wasn't there anymore and left the Fire Nation as the traitor. Also, I think the family dinner will be awkward at that time since Ozai found out that his own family turned against him. His brother escaped from the jail, his son left as the traitor and his daughter is a liar. And I bet Ozai hasn't spoken to Azula at some point since in Sozin's Comet Part One episode, we can see him looking annoyed to realized Azula was there. Also, there's no communication between them at that time when Ozai ditched Azula.
@aaronmueller15603 жыл бұрын
Best part is, it’s not out of nowhere in retrospect. Ty Lee was never really in it for the Fire Nation or for Azula specifically, as she’s not really loyal to anyone but her friends. So when one of her friends is about to attack another of her friends for betraying Azula for the sake of saving Zuko, she would obviously side with Mai. She doesn’t see this as a conflict of nations or honor or anything, just conflicts involving old friends, and she doesn’t want any of her friends to get hurt/killed

Some of the foreshadowings to Mai's betrayal that I've found during my rewatches: 1) In The Drill Mai says that Azula can shoot all the lightning she wants at her, because she won't jump on the dirty water. 2) When they're in Ba Sing Se, Mai and Ty Lee trade looks when Azula talks about not trusting who is closest to you. 3) In the begining of Book 3, Mai side eyes Azula after she tells Mai to leave her and Zuko alone to talk. 4) In The Beach, Mai tells Azula to "leave her alone" while around the camp fire and proceeds to hug Zuko later on.

@sundeepparhar11264 жыл бұрын
@@allison8654 Well, if you look at the real world equivalents to the bending martial arts, Airbending's based on Baguazhang, the foremost of the Chinese 'Neijing' internal martial arts, which revolve around the mastery of spiritual, mental and chi-related aspects, and are developed by using 'neigong', or "internal exercises," as opposed to "external exercises" which develop physical, physiological aspects. As such, Ty Lee's air-bending heritage (confirmed by the creators), and air-bending techniques, are the direct progenitors of her 'chi-blocking' martial arts style. And bending itself's just the external projection of chi to influence the four respective elements, by those with sufficient levels of mastery over it; non-benders still possess chi too, and can still attain mastery of its use, but they're limited to the Neijing internal martial arts (in the case of Master Piandao, and to a lesser extent Sokka and Zuko, the Wudang Sword technique). Which is why Ty Lee, as a non-bending chi master, is arguably even more capable of defying the laws of physics, when it comes to her strength, speed, agility and durability, than Zuko and Azula are.

According to the "Avatar Extras" from this episode, the effects of the cooler cause most firebenders to lose their bending for about a week. Zuko has to be a very powerful firebender in order for the cooler to have no such effects on him, even with his breath of fire technique. Zuko used his breath of fire at the north pole. Zuko’s breath of fire in Book 1 v Book 3. I think it’s fair to say that in Book 1, he still hadn’t quite mastered proper breath control but, by Book 3, he has completely mastered it. Notice how in Book 3 Zuko takes very deep and controlled breaths designed to take in more oxygen while in Book 1 his breaths are very short and quick. Also notice the color of Zuko’s fire. In Book 1, Zuko’s breath of fire is red, meaning that he’s feeding less oxygen into his flame, making the fire somewhat cool. In Book 3, his flame is yellow, meaning that he’s able to feed more oxygen into his fire, which consequently makes his fire hotter. Zuko incorporates moves from the Dancing Dragon to block many fire blasts, including ones from Azula, showing that the Dancing Dragon is not just a novice firebending move but a very powerful form that can be used for defense and attack. Now, you can argue that this discrepancy has to do with the fact that in Book 1, Zuko was in the tundra. HOWEVER, in “The Boiling Rock,” Zuko was being kept in the Cooler, which was supposed to prevent firebending. Not to mention that when Chit Sang was in the Cooler before Zuko, we saw him shivering and evidently being very cold. Zuko, on the other hand…

One detail I appreciate was Zuko's breath of fire. Iroh tells him it could save his life during the raid of the North Pole, and despite this he was shivering most of the time and was almost killed by the cold. This time, having mastered true fire and realizing firebending is both life and breath, he's not shivering at all or looking slightly uncomfortable in the cooler, even when Chit Sang, another firebender, looked like he might die from it.

I love seeing the entire Mai + Ty Lee betrayal. It's so satisfying because their whole relationship was always Azula commanding them what to do and they just willingly did it (unless it was gross, or too much work for Mai), but the moment Azula was going to hurt Mai, Ty Lee reacted without even thinking about it. As a fan of Azula's character, it was a bittersweet moment to see this. Her companions were pretty much under her boot heel since the moment they were introduced. They've been with her since she recruited them. Now that they're gone she's got no one left aside from her in her team. The look of utter confusion on her face during the exchange between her and Mai just shows that she's really not that well equipped to handle situations like these. She's typically about the mission, and doing whatever it takes to complete the mission. Feelings? They're not something that she really picked up on.

He respects them and helps them grow to reach their potential, and he's very calm and considerate when it comes to their foibles, flubs, and fudge-ups, realizing why they (ie, Katara) are lashing out, and he takes it in stride, knowing they're in pain and helping them deal with it. His first reaction to seeing Sokka was to start crying and embrace him. He also trusted that his son had already come up with a plan to escape. Ozai, on the other hand, is a cold, calculating, manipulative, sociopathic, narcissistic user and abuser. He plays his children against each other, caring nothing for their feelings or well-being, except insofar as they can be used for his own gain. He punishes them for even perceived slights, no matter what the reasons behind them are. He crushes weakness, empathy, and disobedience, and has no qualms about immediately maiming and discarding them if they displease him in any way. Azula is exactly the kind of child I'd expect out of THAT particular fustercluck, and she doesn't disappoint. Honestly, it took an absolute miracle (read: Iroh) to keep Zuko even as even-keeled and well-balanced as he is.
@doro50262 жыл бұрын
That's why Iroh never gave up on dude. Because he knew that Zuko was already a good kid and he was just broken from his fucked up brother. Which is also why I think he went with Zuko after his banishment because he was given an opportunity to help him without the eyes of Odi- I mean Ozai on him.

Look at Ty Lee situation here: One of her friend is The Princess of Fire Nation and she's also a prodigy who's not only can create blue fires but also can produce lightning. She's also smart, calculated, cunning and fearless. Her other friend is the daughter of a government who's very skills at knives. If you look closely, Azula look like she wants to direct lightning to Mai and Mai has prepared to throw her knife or kunai to be precise. So, Ty Lee is either watching one of her friend died by a lightning or one of her friend died by a sharp weapon on her heart probably. So, Chi-blocking Azula is the smart decision since Azula is too dangerous.

This episode was part of an event called "Countdown to the Comet". The new episodes of Avatar began airing on July 14, starting with "The Western Air Temple", followed by "The Firebending Masters", The Boiling Rock parts one and two, "The Southern Raiders", "The Ember Island Players", and finally Sozin's Comet parts one through four. This is the first and only episode where only one type of bending is featured, namely firebending. The other bending arts appear only in the opening sequence. Zuko and Mai's exchange about Mai needing protection was a nod to their past relationship. Normally, when Azula bends blue fire, it cools off to orange fire after a few seconds. However, when she was firebending on the gondola, the fire retained its blue color, even when it burned out. The "Previously on Avatar" section for this episode is the longest of all episodes in seasons two and three. This is the last episode in which Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee are seen together. This is one of the only episodes in which Ty Lee is shown fighting, but is unsuccessful at chi blocking her opponents due to the latter evading her attacks. This is the only episode with no credit for Dee Bradley Baker.

Sokka mentioned that his first girlfriend turned into the moon, referring to Yue. This was the first episode in the series in which Zuko called any members of Team Avatar by their real names. He spoke Sokka and Appa's names out loud, and he wrote Aang's name in a letter. The scene in which Sokka tries to kiss Suki in his disguise is similar to the way Suki approaches him in her security guard uniform and kisses him in "The Serpent's Pass". Zuko used his breath of fire technique to keep warm, like he did in "The Siege of the North, Part 1". In "The Day of Black Sun, Part 2: The Eclipse", Aang was the one who decided to keep attacking, while in this episode, Sokka said it was he who made the decision. Sokka may feel responsible as it was his decision to let Aang make the choice. One of the pirates from "The Waterbending Scroll" and "The Waterbending Master" exits the gondola before Hakoda. This was also referenced when two guards were discussing the new prisoners while Sokka and Zuko were in the cooler. Zuko saying that Iroh once said that he never thinks things through is a reference to "Lake Laogai".

That whole interaction between azula, Mai, and Ty Lee at the end is my favorite part of the entire series. When Azula gasps after getting chi blocked, I get chills. It’s the first time she’s been completely blindsided and unprepared for a situation. And then my absolute least favorite line.. “the meat of friendship and fatherhood” happens to also be in this episode so it’s a catch 22🤷🏻♂️

12:28 Zuko took Uncle Iroh's teachings to heart about drawing strength from other elements in book 2 chapter 9 "bitter work". In season 1 finale before Zuko swam in the ice water, Iroh told him that airbenders can keep themselves warm with just their breathing. Zuko must have started learning techniques from other elements, which is why he was able to still firebend after being kept in the cooler.

With the precision she shows? Yeah! Kinda happy she didn't, not only because I was able to watch this as a kid, but also because not killing someone, not even hurting them directly, but still incapacitating them is VERY difficult, hurting/killing would be so much easier, but it goes to show how good and precise she is.

What i really love about Ty Lee's betrayal is at the moment she hits Asula the first time you can see one of the rare moments were she looks angry. Sadly you dont see the frame here because of the cut but her expresion tells everything. Also after Azula tumbled down you see her expresion of disbelieve. She was suprised of herself that she took action and i love thouse small details in Avatar.

It came to me that Mai was going for the kill with her last blade. She was waiting for the right time and to aim precisely. Her and Azula were both aiming to kill each other. In Mai’s case she was in self-defense. Ty Lee saved both of their lives although it meant betraying Azula 🤯
@alyy8924 жыл бұрын
„You miscalculated i love Zuko more than i fear u“ EPIC! And Ty Lee‘s BETRAYAL?? Also in the fighting scene u can see Azula‘s respect towards Sokka and him being a non bender. She doesn’t underestimates him due to her best friends being non bender and both of them take town whole bending armys within seconds. Also the betrayal was so well thought out ! We knew it since season 2 that there was something coming up. Also the prison scene witj Mai and Zuko was so powerful due to her telling him „u could’ve at least looked me in the eye when u ripped my heart out“ and seconds later he looks into her eyes before leaving her.

there was a post on tumblr that actually pointed out something in the stand-off between mai and azula. it shows azula readying her bending, while mai flicks a knife out from her wrist. but if you notice azula's hands, she was about to shoot out electricity, meaning mai's knife would just act as a conductor, along with all the other hidden metal knives in her dress and sleeves. it was a really cool observation, i wish i could find the post itself that explains it better!
