You don't in Red/Blue. Scyther is not on any team but you have a chance in the Safari Zone to see a wild one at least whereas Golem doesn't show up anywhere.

This is a really cool fact. I need to replay gen 1 sometime. Huge flaw in Pokémon is using a large majority of Pokémon for the game rather than swapping it up much more.

golem holds a special place to me, as a kid I had a graveler I grinded to roughly level 84 because I had no idea how it evolved. Golem felt truly unattainable until I got it through glitches a few years later.

That's the coolest part of solo challenges to me. You get to play start to finish with things you didn't care for or couldn't get. The highlights so far for me have been random things like Tyranitar in Crystal or Farfetch'd but things like Golem/Alakazam/Gengar/Machamp were truly fun. They also all have OP leveling groups.

The medium slow leveling group was the true MVP and thanks about the thumbnail. I redid all of mine with some inspiration for a new 'card' style tier list I was doing but the first draft was looking a little too much like Scott's so I went back in and tweaked some things to add in some style. Overall, I just want someone to be able to look at it and say 'That's Golem in Pokemon Red!' at a glance.

Golem was also a favorite as a kid! First trade I remember doing. Awesome run! Did not expect that, seriously impressive planning and execution. Rock slide and EQ go well together, but the speed and weakness management was awesome. I dare any other Pokenerd to seriously try to significantly beat this run with Golem!

Thanks! I've been working and stressing over thumbnails for a week lmao. I've changed them a couple of times and found a solid base that I touched up just today! Cool to hear you say that. As for the run, the medium slow leveling group is a gamechanger. Most people hit hard walls and it takes forever to level up but the ability to level up faster than the fast leveling group for the first bit of the game helps a ton. The badge boosting move didn't hurt either!

I can just let you know. I'm working on a 'card' based system with a trading card style card that has the sprite, time, and resets on it and I just rank them accordingly as I do runs. That way they are ranked and I'm not confined with a linear tier list where I'm constantly reshuffling things around. Cubone was the tipping point because it had a 5 hour time and it was one of the worse runs I had ever done and if that's 5 hours, then that means 'F' tier is 5 hours and things are just really messed up. I need to wait until the 'end' of the tier list to do ranks. When you can average all the times out, then you can get a true 'C' tier in the middle and work from there. Until then, it's all just for show in my opinion but I'll preview the card in the next video, if Parasect comes out then. It's not up to me when that one releases lol.

This really empathizes the point of how important level-up groups are. You would think Rhydon would have stomped Golem with its greater Base Attack stat, along with its higher Base HP stat - to help make up the difference in its weaker Sp Defense stat. With that said, what did you find to be more important in helping Golem vs Rhydon - the difference in their level-up group or having access to a Badge Boosting move /w Golem? It nakes you wonder how Rhydon would do if it was in the better level-up group and / or had access to a BB move. Great run, as always Brother.

I'd say a little of both. Even without the badge boost I think the Medium Slow leveling group would have allowed me to get some extra levels without much time loss and just brute force my way through. They'd be pretty even overall although I do think Rhydon would be slower if I ever elected to redo it because that one blemish on Lorelei isn't my favorite lol.

Golem was always on of my favorite as a kid (pleasantly surprised to see others saying so) and I had a high level one in my party while playing Silver (thanks to a favor from a friend with a link cable). I always thought it was interesting how Golem is the only Pokemon you can't encouter in R/B/Y without a trade, that added to the intrigue for me.

Outside of a dex entry, I don't think I ever actually used one heavily until this video. Fun fact is that dex entry #76 is what I replace for my cross gen runs because it's not actually 'in' the game and makes an easy 1 to 1 swap for those runs.

Yea ability to speed through the early game is always a huge boon. Where Pokémon hit walls is being stuck in the slow growth rate and are forced to take like 4x the time to get to level 15.

Yea, the leveling groups make solo running have a unique measuring stick to gauge these runs. Competitive isn't looking at the growth rate or starting learnset.

Nice run. Denying level up earthquake was some well thought speed strategy. I never understood why they made rock throw so inaccurate. I mean for example Onix on Brocks gym as a pokemon is basicly designed to be difficult on early game to resist all the normal attacks but Brocks pokemon dont even know the move. Its just a base 50 power rock type attack. So frustrating.

One of my issues with solo runs and nuzlockes is that it kind of denies pokemon like Golem or Weezing their some of there best moves things like Explosion or Self Destruct. It is definitely an important move for these types of bulky mons to be able to throw that at a hard fought battle of attrition. I would like to see some way those moves to be used to showcase the power of these mon's physical attacks. It was a good run, this just stood out to me.

Medium-slow growth rate is such a boon to any Pokemon who gets it. Especially in Gen I if you use a badge-boosting move, because while it does level you up fast, it doesn't level you up so fast that you level up mid-battle and lose badge boosts even when starting the battle at having just leveled up.

Yea, it's just great for the early game. By the time badge boosts and what not are in full effect, the medium slow leveling group is getting about even with medium fast and after level 68~ it's slower. It's the best of the main 3 groups for sure.

Since the rival chose bulbasaur (easily the hardest) I reckon it'll be about 2.5 hours. The 90% roll on rock slide is never fun but Misty will be ok with dig and Erika with earthquake because you can delay her

My prediction is that the slow speed will really hurt, Lorelei for sure but also the wrapping Bellsprout trainer. Sure Golem can tank guys and fish out physical damage, but moving second a lot of the time will always make it harder.

Didn’t even cover the Wrap Bellsprout trainer, guess it wasn’t an issue. Being a much higher level and Carbos is one way to overcome a slow speed state. Also you just casually included video of Golem tanking a Dragonite Hyper Beam, the strongest attack from one of the highest attack stats in Gen 1.

That's a neat point you bring up about the middle evo/final evo swaps between Golem and Machamp. Golem especially stands out as not (on the surface) looking like an especially logical evolution to Graveler. I wonder if they would have done something like that if they had been able to program it in?

I'm not sure they ever had that technology for quite a while although I'm a novice and could program something like just making Graveler evolve into Machamp but they'd probably want the trade to trigger the evolution so I guess it comes down to it just being hard to say what they were thinking.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I'm not an expert programmer either, but in theory it would just be an extra check to see if a condition is met *during* a trade. I think they could've pulled something like that off in Gen 2 if they really wanted to (as Gen 2 introduced trade item evos, which is also an extra check for a trade evo), but I think Gen 4 would be a more realistic estimate (Mantyke's evo revolves around having Remoraid in the party, so we know that "evolve if other Pokemon is present" type evos were definitely possible from the beginning of the DS era).

Golem is a beast but slow also 4x weak to Water, 4x weak to Grass, 2x weak to Fighting, 2x weak to Ice, & 2× Ground. Being gen 1 Misty, Erika, & Lorie being a major threat. Also Lance the Ultimate Flying Master got to watch out for his Gyarados with Hydro Pump & the rival and his Venusaur but thanks to gen 1 its weak to Ground 🤣

It’s just neutral! There’s a priority system and it’s archaic to where it just says the first thing on the list which is the poison being weak to ground part. If in doubt, look at my effective power at the top.

I think I say about all there is to say in things like the Rhydon video. Stat experience caps at like 65k but you'll never reach that but each vitamin gives 2,560 stat experience and the vitamins become ineffective and don't work if you are over 25,600 stat experience. In runs that need a lot of help in a stat, you just simply want to plan them out in a way to where you maximize the stat experience you get and plan the run accordingly. Knowing when the Cinnabar or Silph Co. carbos is ineffective and reworking the route to get them a little earlier can net you a few points of extra speed.

I feel like that's all too common. I actually had a lot of people to trade with for gen 1 but by the time gen 2 rolled around, it died down. My next door neighbors played but not much and I never got to use things like Steelix/Slowking/Scizor, etc. That's why I like doing the runs to experience it!

P.s, i am inspired to add some future to gen 1 or 2. Do i just use your 2 links in custom runs and basically copy moves to turn base moves into later? Is there a link or group that I could look at to get started?

There's tutorials on the same github link but that's about the most help you can really get. Being inspired is great but you are definitely going to have to dig and learn about assembly coding or coding in general. Those decomps are simply the base Pokemon Red/Blue games and would be regular versions of the game if you compiled them into a ROM.

Honestly, since it came up a bunch in this run with rock throw and rock slide...I've always wondered what the logic was behind making most rock moves low accuracy. Like...if you got caught in a rock slide or someone threw a huge boulder at you, I feel like that would actually be pretty hard to dodge? lmao

It really doesn't make sense. The popular theory is that things like rock throw were made in mind for the computer to use and the lower accuracy balances it out but Rock Slide is still that way today so I really don't know about that one.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 yeah idk I feel like that still doesn't add up, especially considering they still kept going with the trend when they added rock tomb in gen III, very obviously meant to be used by the player as an early game tm, and still not 100% accurate. Then they rub salt in that wound by introducing bulldoze with the same secondary effect, higher BP, spread damage AND 100% accuracy on top of all that. It seems like they just want rock moves to be inaccurate lol but I just don't understand why.

I think they just hate Rock or they don't want it to be offensive at all. It's a weird decision that would be great to hear the devs actually talk about it the idea behind it.

At least they brought rock throws accuracy up in gen 1. And theres some 100 accuracy rock moves such as ancientpower, accelerock, smack down etc

Man, that would make Body Slam all but useless on a lot of Pokemon and would be a sad day lol. I'd be hesitant for Alakazam because it would just play like the other one but be a little faster when it's already the fastest gen 1 Pokemon to this point. I'm working on a mega run but tbh I'm just not sure how interesting I can make it. At least legendaries and some other Pokemon have signature moves and what not.

I don’t think you judged rock throw too badly. 65% accuracy for it has always been absurd. Honestly someone probably made a mistake and it was supposed to be 95% and someone mistyped haha

I would agree with that but someone at Gamefreak hates rock types moves. So many of them just never have 100% accuracy for some reason.

i think golem will do fairly well-not top tier, but upper mid. It's raw power and defense will allow it to take a ton of punishment, it's HP will help it soak special hits, and stat exp gain over time will help patch up its speed and special. It not having the slow growth rate also helps it level faster, making things better for it. It having access to defense curl for badge boosting is really useful, but it's early game will be a bit rough, though it will be able to do pretty good against brock despite having only tackle as an attacking move because of having defense curl to help reduce damage as well as burn bide turns from onix so golem doesn't take tons of damage from bide. Rock throw is...well, it's fairly powerful, but 65% accuracy is just god awful. Mega punch will help Golem get past misty, or dig could help too (don't remember if it's before or after misty). Once golem gets dig/earthquake and rock slide it's really going to start rolling over most enemies, but any gyarados will be rough to deal with if they outspeed (which is likely), and lorelei will also be rough. 11:30-"I show him mercy by only hitting him with body slam." I dunno, a golem ramming into you at high speed would be pretty brutal and devastating. Dig would be worse, but body slam from golem is also pretty dang rough 15:30-couldn't use the carbos-doesn't that mean that the stat EXP is high enough that the carbos wouldn't make a difference vs the stat exp golem already had? Or is it something like where it might have 100 speed stat exp, vs having 99 and being able to boost it to 109 with a carbos? vs sabrina-it will never cease to amuse me that the psychic gym leader gives you the absolutely garbage move psywave as her reward vs some random guy in her city giving you the incredibly powerful psychic TM for free nicely done vs lorelei

The medium slow leveling group carried this one. As for the carbos comment, you cap out stat exp for vitamins at 25,600 and I was over that for the final carbos. I'd like to fit it in but the late game speed was just not as significant as a point or two of speed earlier.

its 1 of the best ones but even if you can't EVER trade a solo Graveler/Kadabra run is doable BUT starting OUT a SOLO Kadabra run AS Abra only is still a pain in the ass since as a Abra it doesn't learn ANYTHING UNTIL it becomes Kadabra at lv 16 and is stuck with Teleport. But at least beat Glad Golem doesn't START with Self Destruct as its ONLY attack in the Gen 1 games if it did the run would be impossible on a solo rum.

I have a few Egg move runs from Gen 2 already. Those and event move runs just don't perform great enough to do too much of them. The last couple that I've done have moved me away from them.
