see im glad that shes doing this caz you would never know how 13 years of gymnastics made it so hard for her and this all comes from steve and beth rybacki and she is feeling this way caz of steve rybacki screaming at her all the time and i think thats the moment when she started to beat herself up over everything and realized she was never going to get back to the time when she was just starting out and i think thats a crying shame that steve did that to her

This is stupid. They were trying to determine if she had disappointed her fans by asking random strangers who were probably NOT her fans. Of course people who don't even know she is, wouldn't give two craps about whether she made it to the Olympics or not. It might be more helpful to ask some of the women who were little girls then watching her on TV as fans. I'm sure some of them were definitely disappointed and cried.

How many people care so much about gymnastics that they cry when someone is not selected and are still upset about it four years later? The point was that Vanessa was convinced that the WHOLE WORLD was disappointed in her to the point where she was too afraid to try anything new and face the public. She had so much self-shame because of it. This task helped her realize that almost no one is disappointed in her, and that they're kind of doing their own thing and not paying attention to gymnastics. In fact, most of the people she spoke to offered support when they saw the awards that she won and told her that she had more to be proud of than she realized, even if she didn't make the Olympics. Even if there were people she ran across who happened to be fans of hers and were sad when she didn't make it, it's highly likely that they would have gotten over it by that point and have moved on with their lives. Vanessa needed this because she felt like she couldn't move on herself because she thought the general public was upset with her. They weren't.
