Michael Shannon and Stephen Graham had been around and were doing alright before Boardwalk Empire and would have done fine without it. Shea Wigham probably got a boost from his performance as Eli. Like all bullies in outside social settings, Gyp is constantly put down and belittled amongst his own family. This explains why he always deals such vicious verbal attacks to enemies as if equipped with a physically devastating weapon precisely like those that abuse him at home.
