Answer: We make impressions using gypsum, not take impressions. The reason for this is that gypsum is a rigid material that does not have the ability to conform to the soft tissues of the mouth. Instead, we use a flexible impression material, such as alginate or silicone, to take an impression of the teeth and gums. Once the impression is taken, it is then poured with gypsum to create a rigid cast of the teeth and gums. This cast is then used to create dental restorations, such as crowns, bridges, and dentures.
