Gypsy of the Year, opened with the tap-happy journey of a stage manager, played by Ryan Kasprzak, who reluctantly ditches his headset and clipboard to step into the spotlight as a last-minute replacement. He ultimately leads an ensemble of 20 exuberant tappers in an uplifting number, set to Walk the Moon’s energetic “Shut Up and Dance.” The opening number was directed and choreographed by Al Blackstone, assisted by Morgan Rose, with music direction and arrangements by Ben Cohn.
Written by Chris Dimond
Orchestrations by Adam Michael Kaufman
Stage Manager: Jeff Brancato
Assistant Stage Manager: Ellen Goldberg
Copyist: Daniel Gittler
Costumes by Jeff Johnson-Doherty
Assistant Costume Designer: Katrina Newman
Six weeks of energetic fundraising efforts by 54 Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring companies led to an incredible $4,786,239 being raised for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, it was announced Tuesday at the culminating celebration of the 27th annual Gypsy of the Year.
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is one of the nation’s leading industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organizations. I remember Ryan from So You Think You Can Dance. He and his brother were pitted against each other (for dramatic purposes, of course) and his brother made it into the finals. Still, I always remembered Ryan because he was a great dancer and a likable guy. Glad to see he's doing well!

I love watching this number because my younger sisters and I have all SM'd, and all had to fill in for actors because we didn't have understudies and knew blocking and lines the best. It's a very real experience in community (and maybe off-broadway? lol) theater.

Great opening number!! Loved the quick change behind the cloth hangers and with no help on stage left. Definitely going to try to make it to NYC for Gypsy of the Year 2016.

Oh how I wish I could have seen this part, but because of some screw-ups at "Will Call", I and a few hundred other people were on a huge line outside the theater waiting for our tickets, even though we arrived early. I know problems happen, but with so many people unable to get to their seats, through no fault of their own, I wish they could have held the curtain for even 5 more minutes.

Stage management is a whole job. We are not just sitting around wishing we were actors. Just because y'all want to be onstage doesn't mean we do. Who is going to call that show now?
