I saw it December 20 - the matinee on the day after opening. I've seen a lot of great Broadway shows, but this one completely blew me away! Audra is beyond fantastic and literally stopped the show several times. Some say her voice is too refined for the role, but I thought it worked well and her acting was on point and pulled me (and apparently the rest of the audience) into the story. The entire cast hit their performances out of the park. The orchestra and sets were wonderful. I highly recommend getting out to see this one!

Completely agree! The armchair critics have a right to their opinion, but from the first "Sing out, Louise!" to the very end, Audra is phenomenal in the role. I think people have pre-conceived notions of what Rose should be based on what they've seen or heard in the past. Well, this is the first full production I've ever seen, and Audra is ~my~ Rose 🌹, and I'm so happy to have witnessed it. All of the other cast also shine -- this will help skyrocket the careers of Joy Woods (Louise) and Jordan Tyson (June).

audra is a major talent but in my humble opinion miscast . we went jan 6 matinee, her portrayal of an angry black moma rose lacks something though I must say her " rose's turn" was powerful. This revival is worth seeing if you love Gypsy but 4th to, Patti lupone, Tyne daly and bernadette peters .

Gotta have a gimmick. Surely one of the best numbers ever. I read, if I recall correctly, that Jule Styne was, in once sense, a "lazy" composer. He'd produce a song and if they power-that-be didn't like it, rather than revise it, he'd simply write a new one. Anyone know if that's true?

I think I see what the issue is with Audra McDonald as Mama Rose: it’s like casting Clair Huxtable as Mama Rose. It’s not a horrible choice, but…well. Seriously, go check out Imelda Staunton as Mama Rose. See her version of “Rose’s Turn.” THAT is Mama Rose: She’s this raw, jealous, hard-bitten, resentful stage mom who’s trying to live vicariously through her daughters. She’s like Patsy Ramsey trying to live vicariously through JonBenet. That’s what Mama Rose is.

I love Audra but I feel she’s miscast, she has a beautiful, elegant, subtle and sensitive voice, she’s a lovely person, these songs were written for Ethel Merman about a monster mother. Also I know who Gypsy Rose Lee and June Havoc were and I know their work, I know this production is a reinterpretation, but if the races were reversed it would cause a total meltdown to racially recast characters based on real people like this. It has to happen all ways or not at all.

The cast looks great! Audrey is undeniably fantastic but the story is a little depressing isn’t it? Are we really going to enjoy ourselves watching this show about child abuse…again…and BTW no one is going to beat Natalie Woods.

Thats what I thought at first. Until I saw it in person. It's not like the "typical" but she brought so much more to it! It was almost haunting. You have to see it to believe it.

Interesting. Wasn't this the story of a real burlesque entertainer? Rewriting history????
@pinheadlarry840117 күн бұрын
Yup… …. ….
@ajrobinson72917 күн бұрын
Nope. It’s a fictional story loosely based on an exaggerated memoir written by Gypsy Rose Lee. Always has been.
@pinheadlarry840116 күн бұрын
@ I agree, but I think Rose’s Turn and the general story of the play loses something by making Rose a victim of time and place rather than the monster she was written to be. Sure, the layers of racism and sexism that Rose faces in this version can be argued to have added something to the story, but this narrative of overcoming these obstacles is so oversaturated in stories today that I feel it is becoming trite. Yes, it’s very important to acknowledge these things and write stories about them, but I think in this case that narrative is being shoehorned into a story that was never about that, never needed to be, and never should’ve been.
@chocolatesouljah15 күн бұрын
It is also known that the "memoir" it is based on by Gypsy Rose Lee, rewrote history by embellishing and making the book more entertaining. Then when adapted for the stage when Ethel Merman was cast as the mother, a big star, the focus was no longer on Gypsy Rose Lee, but her mother, Rose Hovick. By the way, the musical ends in the Gypsy Rose Lee's dressing room, a scene between mother and daughter, and the book ends with Gypsy Rose Lee heading off to Hollywood. The trip to Hollywood was a fact, the scene in the play was more a less a confection to give the characters a final scene.
