@captaincruise_eq.8652
@captaincruise_eq.8652 3 жыл бұрын
@@leahhailstones2457 sure! Western riding is what everyone thinks of with cowboys and the Wild West and all that. They have larger “western” saddles. Western was originally used to herd cattle, and the saddle is more comfortable to sit longer periods of time. English saddles were more commonly used in England, and are commonly used for jumping, where you need a smaller light weight saddle with lots of mobility.

I have a farm that does educational events. Why do so many grown men feel the need to tell me about how they grew up riding on grandpa’s farm, going on cattle drives, and loooooove galloping… only to demonstrate their ignorance around my horses (calling them all stallions, saying our minis are baby horses, walking up right behind the horses, etc.)? 😂 It really is okay to not pretend you know more than you do!

@@Firstfalconfree Oh my.. I teach beginners and middle-advanced in my stable and there was once a man who was offending our pony because of his size (While Barry is great pony, comfortable like sofa, good for children and also the other horse had heavy training with other student with my colleague before, so i didn't want her to override and took pony) and other dude was correcting me when I said one of the mares was pregnant. I don't recall if english has dofferent words for human pregnancy and horse pregnancy like my native polish, but I used the human word instead of horse one. Which is funny, because nobody even uses the horse word for it, but the old man had to show he knows something. Absolutely annoying

Okay so I went to camp at my barn and this one girl she literally told her horse well she rode MY horse because I couldn't say no to my trainer, anyways she told the horse to stop galloping when it was in a western trot. And she went "oh I knew that" Okay so when I went to camp I was having problems with my leg, right and so my trainer said I probably shouldn't go any faster than a trot. And then Tory (the annoying know it all) was cantering on the lunge line but apparently she has riding for 8 years and she still cant canter on her own when she literally said before we got on that she loves to canter and that's the best "mode". Yeah she said mode. Basically she called me a baby because I wasn't cantering. So yeah, I hope she doesn't come next year.

@@alexbinion614 Once I got to the point of being advanced enough to have the knowledge and skill to help beginners (so since about my 6th year of riding - I rode mostly on and off until my 8th year), I've always loved it - in college, that meant helping my classmates the first year and my friends in the classes below me the other three years. Worked at a couple camps with horses during college, and thoroughly enjoyed helping teach the kids how to ride. Loved helping beginners so much that, after college, I went through certification to become an instructor myself.

@SnowySpiritRuby
@SnowySpiritRuby 3 жыл бұрын
@@adly_m6307 The kids and instructors were nice at the camp I went to all 3 years I went (it was a Christian camp, so that may have had something to do with it, but I don't know for sure), as they also were where I took lessons for 6 years (okay, scratch that - there was one particular person at that stable, not a kid, who wasn't very nice to me, but she was the only one who wasn't and she and I were almost never there at the same time); I think whether they're nice or not really depends on the camp. As for lessons before camp or vice versa, I think that's honestly a personal choice and based on what you can afford and what's available to you. I know lots of people who started at camp and then switched to lessons (me included), as well as people who started at lessons and also went to camp. Most camps in my experience (I went to one and worked at two others, so my experience is limited, but based on what I've learned over the last 10 years, a lot of camps appear to be similar to those with regards to how the riding program is run) are designed to cater primarily to the beginner rider, who has never ridden a horse before, but many also divide campers up into different groups based on skill level and experience. I know some riding stables require you to have your own horse (whether owned, leased, borrowed, or some other arrangement), while others provide the horses. For lessons (depending on the program), there's a good chance you'll get more riding time, but that varies from one to the next as well (my third year of camp, I think we had more riding time in a day than I did when I did lessons), and often in riding lessons (again, depending on the stable) you're more likely to be responsible for catching, grooming, and tacking and untacking, while camps will often have the horses already tacked up and ready to ride when you get to the barn, at least for less experienced riders. Honestly, the best advice I can give is do your research on the camps and riding lesson programs that are available to you, taking into account things that would likely be important factors (for example, price, lesson length, class size, distance you would have to drive to get there and how often you would have to drive it, whether the classes are divided up by skill level, whether you are required to provide your own horse, what time(s) of year the camp or lessons are offered, any age restriction (if applicable), etc. - I'm in the process of setting up my own lesson program, so these are all factors I've recently had to consider and make decisions about), and make your decision based on that. Hope that helps at least a little bit, because honestly that's about all I can really say - it really does ultimately come down to personal preference and what is available to you.

This reminds me of when we had our most experience riders take their own horses and demonstrate what not to do. One was holding one reign really tightly the other really loosely and the person behind her said. “Just forget the reigns all together.” And dropped them it was funny they were trying to one up eachother with the worst horse riding.

So I'm currently teaching someone in horse camp (its taught by older teenagers (I'm 17) when the instructor double books herself) and she's riding one of the lesson horses who used to be a 2D barrel horse. We've been working on getting her slow and showing her that slow is the key to being a lesson horse. Anyways, I'm one of her main riders and I've done most of her training to get her here. The girl that I'm teaching, let's call her Karen, she tells me how she wants to canter and gallop her in the arena. Now, keep in mind that this is an ex barrel horse who we've turned into a calm, beginner lesson horse, but it is so easy for this horse to revert to her old self. I tell the girl 'no' and she tells her mom what I said, so then the mom talks to the lead instructor/owner of the barn and she tells me that I should at least let the girl try to do it. So I did today otherwise I wouldn't be paid for my time. And this girl just takes off galloping around the arena, has no care for the other slower lesson horses teaching other kids, and nearly runs her into the fence. This mare is 25 and can't handle a serious injury. I'm a drill rider and I lease her. Now she's basically out for the entire week and there's no other horse for me to ride since it's a big team. Don't know if'll be charged for vet bills or the girl's parents will, since I'm fully leasing the horse.

OH my goodness! That is simply the worst. I have never been in your position but that is just not okay. I personally feel like you should be able to say NO to whoever or whatever if you are full leasing the horse. She needs to 100% pay for whatever damage. Also, maybe you could drop her as a student? Have you watched Free Rein? That show BUGS the heck out of me because the main character, Zoe, is a total beginner and directly disobeys her instructors and the barn rules and takes off cantering a "crazy" horse. I think some people like "Karen" see those examples and think "oh I could do that!" 🙄 I am so protective of my horse and will not let anyone who has that sort of attitude EVER ride. Anyways... I'm done ranting. I am SO sorry that you are in the position that you are in. I hope your barn manager will see that letting "Karen" get her way while going against her Riding Instructors (your) advice was a bad idea. Some people need to learn that patience is key and you don't always get to go from level 1 to level 20 overnight. There is no instant gratification with horses. If she expects that, she should find a new sport! Good luck Anna! Hope your horse feels better soon 💜

Anna, get a lawyer! Immediately, these kind of people need to learn that they are absolutely NOT allowed to treat any horse that way! Especially since you’re responsible for the horse 💯 Your “ barn manager” needs to grow balls...... totally irresponsible on their part!!!! Please get a lawyer 👍🙏💯 The brat absolutely needs to pay for damages done to the horse. The so called “ manager “ should be dismissed immediately!

My barn has an annual horse camp every year and since they have 100 horses and 50 ponies, so many ppl come there and people get to have 2-3 horses. Ppl were divided into groups by riding level, and in those groups they were divided by age. Some 10 year olds in the beginner group in the middle of the age group never payed attention so when we did anything they didn’t know how to do it. Then when it was free time, they would kick the horse’s sides and try to jump over jumps without a counseler knowing, and then fell off 😂

That's why I always make sure to teach (and reinforce) basic arena etiquette if I ever have more than one rider in the corral at a time. Saves a huge headache, because they learn early on not to cut each other off or pass someone without letting the person know. Wish they'd taught even basic arena etiquette in my college's horsemanship class - would have been a huge help for everyone, and would have saved me from startling every time someone passed me closely without giving any warning.

@SnowySpiritRuby
@SnowySpiritRuby 3 жыл бұрын
Don't be scared - if you want to go to horse camp and are that worried about it, see if you can find a camp where they don't have a younger age cutoff for the beginner riders (that might not be the exact phrase I'm looking for, but I hope it still makes sense); if there are older beginners, or at least the camp has older ages as an option for beginners, you're less likely to run into that sort of thing, as it will basically be expected that some beginners will be older than, say, 12. Or perhaps a camp that focuses more on teaching skills than dividing riders into different levels (the latter of which could possibly make the age difference more obvious). Or maybe one that has separate class times or camp sessions for older campers? Or maybe one that allows for group bonding time (for lack of a better term) before you ever get to the barn, so that there's a good chance that there will already be that mutual respect established? Just throwing out ideas, as it ultimately comes down to what is available to you. I can't personally speak to what it's like being a much older beginner among younger kids at camp because I only went to camp when I was in grade school, but the place I took lessons offered beginner lessons for all ages 7 and up - 7-9, 9-11, and 12+ - and with the 12 and up age classes, it was anyone 12 and up, so we had kids in junior high, all the way up to grandparents, together in the same classes, and I distinctly remember some of the younger students happily helping some of the older ones who were in their classes. Hope that helps at least a little. Obviously every camp is going to be slightly different, so honestly the best advice I can give is to do your research on what is available to you and decide, based on that, what you would be comfortable with.
