Wow...that was neat! Gyrfalcons are like the wolves of the sky, that ptarmigan didn't even have a chance once those sharp talons were locked on. Five stars and a favorite!
The poor innocent adorbale ptarmigan...ah well the falcon was pretty cool too. The song matched really well, and althought I felt bad for the poor poor ptarmigan, the video was really well done and I give it five stars!

Thank you for the info. One more thing : a wild bird would not land on level ground to feed, but rather perch itself on a cliff or a pow. Only trained falconry birds accomodate themselves to feed on land : falconers train them to this behaviour. In fact, there are not so many documentaries about raptors ecology in the wild, so much easier to work with a trained one.
Trained gyr and a complete set up. Ptarmigan don't just fly in front of gyr. They just take off like rockets. Gyrfalcons can catch them, but a long tail chase usually going out of site.

For me its NOT about something dieing its the grace and the beauty of the animal and the talent and movement of the bird. i have no enjoyment of the bird dieing even though that's just the circle of life.

That's a beautiful bird. We have been to Spitsburgen but I guess we would need to go to Nunavut to see these and I think the cost may be too much for us.

Let's not forget, falconers are conservationists first, and foremost, and there is no better proponent for the well being of raptors and other wild things. Remember way back in the '70's when the Peregrine Falcon was endangered? It was falconers that brought them back from the edge, and the Peregrine has since been de-listed. Falconry is a hunting sport, true, but its roots go back thousands of years, and it is a way of life for many people across the world. Falconry tradition = conservation.

While fishing aroung Pangnirtung, NU, I was fortunate enough to see a Gyr Falcon chasing down a Raven in the sky. Quite the sight to see, the Raven got away.. but 20 minutes later he was chasing down another Raven, this time the battle was longer, but the raven got away again. I thought he was hunting the raven but my ataata(dad) told me he was chasing the raven out of his territory. Wish i had a camera to share it with you all.

Surely that happens ... Even eagle owls are known to take peregrines on occasion. That doesn't mean they're able to outfly them.
@markmoore40889 жыл бұрын
The ptarmigan was missing the same pair of main primary flight feathers on each wing. It should have six of the long slotted ones but only has four. Possibly altered by the photographers to slow it down for an easier catch?
@markmoore40888 жыл бұрын
Beautiful birds but it's a staged event which I think is a bit deceptive.
@warbirdfalconryservicesinc97248 жыл бұрын
+mark moore was it not moulting?
@markmoore40888 жыл бұрын
Warbird Falconry Services Inc. Possibly, but the molting sequence seems to be out of order based on the feathers that are missing. I'm cerrainly no expert on ptarmigans, but since its a staged event, that makes me think it's likely the ptarmigan's flight was intentionally handicapped.
@markmoore40888 жыл бұрын
Warbird Falconry Services Inc. Don't these ptarmigan go through a summer and winter color change as well, brown in the summer, white in the winter? Seems like if it was molting it would have some non-white feathers mixed in with the white ones. I notice that the gyr isn't molting, which may or may not mean anything, especially with a captive bird and the possibility of an artificially altered molt period.

+mark moore This is actually footage from Marty Stouffer's "Wild America" PBS show from circa 1996. I used to watch it every week. He's a very entertaining and likeable host but indeed at the time he was accused of baiting animals and staging wildlife events. I typed in marty stouffer ptarmigan and found an interesting article from around that time.

Hey, this is Chrysae here, and I was wondering if I have permission to use some of your footage for my own video, about birds? It's for personal use, not publication, and credit to you will be given. Thank you!
Its been asked befor and hasn't really been answered but I'd really like to know the name of the song or the choir that made it. thanks in advance. Cool Vid. We have a Gyr at the bird rescue centre that I work for.

In fact the Gyrfalcon is much faster than a Peregrine in level flight - probably one of the fastest of all falcons.
@Semendrija12310 ай бұрын
Much faster in level flight, I highly doubt?! Faster on average, maybe, but generally they have comparable top level flight speed, and from my experience some peregrines are even faster than some gyrfalcons and it comes to individual traits of the falcon.

Peregrines are the jet fighter's of the bird world; they swoop in from high altitudes at blinding speeds. Gyrfalcons are the dogfighters; they circle their prey, go in for a pass to find their weakness, and then move in for the kill.

Everybody believed this footage ? At 1mn50s, the ptarmigan flying is missing major primary feathers on both wings. So it is probably a baggy given by the cameraman. At 1m44s, the gyrfalcon do not take the ptarmigan flying INTO the falcon : conclusion : the ptarmigan is definitly a baggy, gyr is not wild bird. Probably captive bred from some falconer hired by the cameraman for the footage. Flight of this gyr is weak in relation to a wild bird. No prey fly to its death, no wild gyr would miss it.
@telemarkman12 жыл бұрын
@jorensalinas: The Gyrfalcon is much faster, so it's not very likely that the Golden Eagle will get the chance to "kick its butt" ;-) In the open air a falcon normally has an advantage over other birds of prey, even those bigger than itself.

Peace vs. oppression. I don't blame the falcon - that is his part in the nature, but I don't get why all of you are getting excited. Excitement with a kill signifies ones weakens. To all of you who think that the kill was "neat" or "great". You are among the "Ptarmigan" population of humans and NOT the Falcon one. Only weak or a sick person gets excited with a kill (Falcon does it for food and not to feel strong or for the thrill). I feel sorry for you....
