One of my most requested project has been to 3D print a radio controlled car. I decided to modify that request and build a 2 wheeled car stabilized by a rotating gyroscope. There was a car called the Gyro-X in the 1960s that inspired this entire project. The main idea is to have a vehicle balancing on 2 wheels and staying upright by the use of a heavy rotating wheel called a gyroscope. I designed everything in Fusion360 and 3D printed all the parts on the new Creality CR-10 Max. By using a quite powerful brushless electric motor with a belt system it move along nicely. Even though the steering didn't work I would still call it semi-successful.

The axis of rotation of your gyroscope should be vertical. Currently your gyroscope is fighting the turning force applied by the front wheel. This is causing the tilt when you steer. The simple explanation for this is that a rotating mass will "resist" forces perpendicular to its axis of rotation. (Further Explanation) Ok it's not really resisting, when you apply a force to a rotating mass the force actually gets applied 90 degrees offset. Videos that show this kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4XNeIeuiMqpfqc (this is the best one imho) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqqcgoafi6hlnZI kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnmqfHyweMiJl5Im24s Note the force equation. You gyroscope is composed of a few parts, the disk is called a flywheel. Because of the force equation you should use a flywheel with more mass near the outside and less mass on the inside. (will get more effective flywheel that weighs less) If you really want to do this right have two flywheels in the same vertical axis that rotate in opposite directions, you could do this with some simple gearing. If I'm correctly remembering how all this works it should cancel out a little more because the forces will get applied opposite of eachother (180*). PS with a vertical axis gyro you shouldn't have an issue with precession because having two wheels spaced apart will only allow the gyroscope to fall in a vertical plane (which is perpendicular to the direction of travel). Also a clarifying note, a gyro with a vertical axis will not be affected in any way by turning. By exploiting more physics stuffs and adding some control logic you could make a single wheeled RC car. BTW the car you base your design on has a gyro with a vertical axis. You do awesome work. Hope this helps you make a more awesome rc car :)

Would it make a difference mounting the gyro horizontally?
@arnavjain7564
@arnavjain7564 4 жыл бұрын
I think it would cause some instability because then it would be similar to a helicopter without the tail rotor.(conservation of angular momentum) Because the gyroscopic disc would be rotating in one direction, the car's body would want to rotate in the opposite direction and cause some sort of weird drift. This is not a problem when it's vertical because the normal force from the ground and the weight of the car stop the rotation along the body of the car, but when horizontal there is only friction stopping the car's tyres from sliding. I could be totally wrong here, I'm just saying what I think would happen..
@datalorian
@datalorian 4 жыл бұрын
because of gyroscopic procession the force from the gyro wheel is affected 90 degrees off axis so it would become stabilized in the wrong axis.

The gyro should be horizontal and and should be able to pitch. Since the force of a gyro happens 90 from where it is applied it will turn the car left/right when it moves front/back. Example of a passive gyro: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3zQmYecncaKfZo

Great work! If I may suggest a significant improvement, the whole point to have a gyro is to act on it so can have a self leveling car for as longas as there is juice on the battery. First you should mount the gyro motor on a single axis swivel, like a thurst vectoring swivel that creates rudder control on a zaggy wing motor. The gyro's motor axis of rotation should be vertical this time, not horizontal like yours. The swivel must be placed so it tilts the gyro back and forth with the help of a pretty strong servo. When the servo tilts the gyro back and forth, the whole car will tilt left and right, because of Momentum Conservation. This means that you can control the level of the car without touching the ground, just by forcing the gyro. The self leveling will be complete using a drone flight board or a helicopter tail rotor stabilizer to sense the horizon and act on the swivel servo to keep the vehicle leveled. Cheers again and good job!

When I was a kid I had an RC motorcycle toy. It balanced on two wheels using no gyro, but was kinda tricky. It required you to keep the speed up and give it a rolling launch. I think the play in the steering is what allowed it to balane (as well as the weight distribution and the rake of the fork)

So, what if you put the gyro on a pivoting mount attached to a servo (perpendicular to the axis of rotation). Then you could steer much like a motorcyclist by leaning to one side or the other instead of having to turn the front wheel.
@DjDiffrnt
@DjDiffrnt 4 жыл бұрын
You don't steer a motorcycle by leaning. You steer it by countersteering - basically turning the wheel the opposite direction of the turn. Sounds weird, but that's how it's done. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZWte4uenJxsoJo

Awesome work. Your gyro basically does what the crankshaft does on a motorbike (unless it's a BMW or a Guzzi). I make it sport to put my foot down as little as possible, and sometimes a little gunning of the engine is enough to keep you upright for the crucial second before the lights turn green. Also, check out the Wolseley Shilovski Gyrocar, one of my favourite vehicles. The same concept, but built in the first world war. The gyroscope was mounted on a cradle that could be swung back and forth to create a left and right force while the car stood still. And looks-wise it doesn't get any more steampunky.

Thanks much for showing this. I learned stuff. If you build another "car", can I suggest you try adding a little trail (on a bike or motorcycle, caster on a car) on the steering wheel? Just put the axle of the wheel behind the steering axis by 1/2 to 2 inches. It will make a big improvement in the vehicle stability. Thumbs up to crush a troll.
