I'm obviously biased but I genuinely think he's one of the best pundits speaking about geopolitics and politics in general; at least in the English speaking world. Its a shame he usually gets so few views, though I guess that's the tradeoff when you don't rage bait for maximum views.

@@john1425 Trump has been in legal trouble since way before he (leave alone she) got voted into office. This isn't about imprisoning an innocent person because he happens to be your opposition. If he goes to prison, it'll be because of HIS OWN actions and nothing else. Nobody forced him to commit tax and business fraud, nobody forced him to commit sexual assault, nobody forced him to take and hide classified documents after leaving the office, and nobody forced him to try to overturn election results through planting fake electors and through intimidation of lawmakers and his own VP. He DID all of that, and if you do that sort of stuff, then don't play victim when the law catches up to you. If you don't want to do the time, then don't do the crime.

The 2024 US election is probably the longest, most divisive and most expensive election in the history of the country and perhaps in the world . No other democratic country is adopting this kind of election system, most elections in Asia, Europe, the Americas, Canada and Australia only lasted at best 2-3 months with a cap on spending. Just for comparison the 2024 US election cycle lasted more than 2 years started in 2023. Our democracy really needs an update.
@SamMurray-h9w
@SamMurray-h9w Күн бұрын
indeed. And it's never going to get an update when the parties have various advantages depending on which aspect of the system you look at. It's going to be status quo until there is any serious contention from a true independent candidate, or third party momentum in politics in general. That we have these two largely inept parties holding all the keys with no motivation to change anything is the biggest hinderance to progress IMO.

Of what use is it to vote in a system which doesn't respect one's vote? I am speaking primarily, but not solely, of the Electoral College. The US Senate s also a profoundly anti-democratic institution. And DC residents do not have full voting rights. When people like Ian Bremmer start focusing on reforming the system of democracy, I'll take a lot more seriously his exhortation to VOTE, because it will start to feel like it really means something.

Is the Electoral College an asset or a deficit to the democratic process? If it does not promote democracy, how can we stand by it and still call ourselves democratic? Who does the Electoral College serve? Who has it served in the past? Are uniform voting regulations part of the democratic process? Why does our country not have them? What do we have to do to get them established? Why does our democracy not represent the will of the majority of the people here? Why is our government so resistant to change, particularly change for the better?

I do not agree that everybody has to vote. Two elderly people I know who have voted Repub for 80 years now finally say that they don't like either candidate and are not voting for the first time. It's a win (for me) because they aren't giving votes to somebody who they don't especially understand or like. Yes, they could vote 3rd party but they know nothing about them and it would split votes from those who are voting and really know what's going on.

I am fine with most of what you said and actually agree with your sentiments on Trump. But you should clarify your views on the electoral college, because some are taking your comments as support for the Democrat's desire to overturn our constitutional order by abolishing the electoral college. These desires worry me as much as the manifest unfitness of Trump for the presidency. If we are to work our way through the current political realignments without descending into violence, things that protect the rights of the minority must be protected. This includes the electoral college protecting the rights of small states and the Senate filibuster protecting the minority party. What the progressive left fails to understand is that political gridlock on controversial issues is a feature built into our system by the wisdom of our founding fathers, not a bug that must be fixed.
