To prepare Brahmin style Bisibelebath, gather the following ingredients:
1. 1 cup rice (preferably Sona Masoori)
2. 1/2 cup toor dal (split pigeon peas)
3. 1/2 cup moong dal (split yellow gram)
4. 2-3 medium-sized tomatoes, chopped
5. 1 cup assorted vegetables (such as carrots, beans, and cauliflower), chopped
6. 1 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
7. 1 tsp mustard seeds
8. 1 sprig curry leaves
9. 10-12 cashews, broken
10. 1-2 dried red chilies
11. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
12. 1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
13. 2-3 tbsp coriander leaves, chopped
14. Salt to taste
For the masala paste:
1. 2 tbsp coriander seeds
2. 1 tbsp chana dal (split Bengal gram)
3. 1 tbsp urad dal (split black gram)
4. 1/2 tbsp cumin seeds
5. 2-3 dried red chilies
Cook the rice and dals separately until done. In a pan, heat ghee and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add curry leaves, cashews, and dried red chilies. Sauté for a minute. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft. Grind the masala paste ingredients into a fine powder and add it to the pan. Cook for a few minutes.
Next, add the cooked rice, dals, vegetables, turmeric powder, asafoetida, and salt to taste. Mix well and cook for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves before serving. This Brahmin style Bisibelebath is a delicious and healthy meal that showcases the authentic flavors of South Indian cuisine.
