I have been an admirer of Thoreau all my life. I never tire of reading him or reading about him. I am afraid he is not appreciated as much as he should be.

This is an interesting comment pointing to a fundamental mystery. The search for meaning and the longing to know is the life-blood of higher aspiration. Thoreau seems to have found that in that realm where the deepest questions are answered, both "self" and "other" as well as time itself dissolves; past, present and future unite into one.

HDT was a great influence on Mahatma Gandhi esp civil disobedience in the narrative of Indian independence struggle . Also the theosophical movement which made great contribution to eastern spirituality

Great American thinker. I am another. We are like infants with knives. Civilisation, like democracy, does not exist. This is what is necessary to reach the first step of civilisation: 1. Free food (veg. of course) for everybody and all living things 2. Free housing for all 3. Free medicine (holistic and modern) for all 4. Free education (core subjects - Creativity, Earth Appreciation, Family, Ethics, Survival) for all 5. Proper respect and absolute care of the elderly Paid for by the former weapons, war and space industries. ECH

Nature has big revelations to offer. Or the biggest revelations. There is a religion to be found in nature. Animate life spirit is inferior to nature life spirit, in nature you see some kind of invincibility.
